Russia is Algeria’s primary military hardware supplier, and continues to deliver land, sea and air equipment, including T-90 main battle tanks, Mi-28NE attack helicopters and Mi-26T2 heavy transport helicopters.
A Russian defence industry source told Russian news agency TASS that Russian defence exports to Algeria amounted to $457 million last year and Russia has supplied $8.27 billion worth of hardware since 1991.
Deliveries continue, with Russia shipping 67 T-90SA main battle tanks in July, as part of a 2014 contract for 200 tanks. Deliveries began last year and will be completed by the end of next year. Algeria will have received a total of 508 T-90SA tanks, the defence source told TASS, but this may increase as Algeria is considering local production under license. The North African country is also eyeing the new T-14 Armata main battle tank.
At the moment Russia is concluding flight trials on two Mi-26T2 helicopters prior to delivery. They will join four already delivered while another eight will be delivered in 2016-17. Meanwhile the first six of 42 Mi-28NE attack helicopters were delivered in May-June this year.
The military source noted that despite the low oil price and “harsh economic conditions” Russia hopes to continue to do brisk defence trade with Algeria.
On the naval side, two Tigr corvettes are scheduled for delivery from Russia in 2017, while two Project-636E/Kilo submarines will be delivered to the Algerian Navy in 2018.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s (SIPRI) arms transfers database, Russia delivered 120 B05Ya01 Berezhok manned combat turrets intended for BMP-1/BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles and 1 300 Kornet-E (AT-14 Spriggan) anti-tank guided missiles last year. Algeria has ordered 4 000 Kornet-Es, 360 Berezhok turrets, and 14 Su-30MKA fighter jets.
