Russia is spying on Britain like it’s the Cold War again | New York Post

There are as many Russian spies now operating in Britain as at the Cold War’s peak, according a leading authority on Kremlin espionage.

Moscow-based writer Andrei Soldatov, an expert on on Vladimir Putin’s security apparatus, told the Times of London that there were at least 30 Russian spies on British soil.

Some work through formal diplomatic jobs, others are planted by Moscow with fake IDs, and some live completely in the open as businessmen, according to Soldatov.

In addition to keeping an eye on British military installations, the spies also keep track of Russian ex-pats who might be trashing Putin to their new countrymen.

“The FSB is mostly concerned with gathering information about people who might present some kind of threat to the authorities in Russia, such as Russian dissidents living in the UK,” Soldatov said.

Russian spying is a hot topic of discussion in the UK after retired High Court Judge Sir Robert Owen released a 329-page report last week, concluding that Putin “probably” ordered the murder of a former Kremlin agent Alexander Litvinenko.

The ex-Rusian spy was poisoned to death in London in 2006, after sipping a cup of green tea spiked with a radioactive isotope, polonium-210.

We've had plenty of media reports according to which the US was spying on ITS ALLIES, and Germany was spying on ITS ALLIES, so I'm am not surprised Russia or anybody else is spying on potential foes. Let's face it, knowing what's going on is a great advantage in geopolitics.

This is a case of "spy vs spy." Many of the developed countries are involved in this activity. Some countries spy not only on their enemies but on friends also. This situation could be regarded as a necessary evil; they need the information to formulate strategies.
These strategies may be directed at either friends or foes. In regard to the foes, it is imperative that measures are in place to be able to deter any possible threat. In relation to friends, the activities may mostly be centered around trying to ascertain if there is some competing taking place, in addition, even amongst friends they can't totally let their guard down.
An integral feature of the spy game is that opposing countries will take full advantage of finger pointing even though they are doing likewise.

We have a similar situation here but it's on the opposite side. The rebels in the southern Philippines are acting like there is a war. Like shell-shccked soldiers, those rebels are tying to pick a fight amid the peace negotiation that is going on. With Russia, the remnants of KGB cannot stay put and perhaps they are missing what they used to do hence they continue spying for no reason at all.

So Russia's taking an interest in Britain this time. And this latest issue is making me wonder why one earth they'd bother. They don't want their spy planes to be mistakenly shot down again, right? After what happened to a commercial plane of theirs, they should've learned their lesson by now.

I think Russians always had spies in Britain. The more important thing to know is how many spies does Britain have in Russia?

I reckon it is amazing that there are many spies from Russia from the country which shows how they can live normal lives and no one will notice them and just think they are a normal worker and also it will be interesting to see how they live unseen, from the ones who they spy on and also it can take time to adjust to this sort of life for the ones who have to keep a double life. I think that Russia is testing the waters and seeing how they can live in a land which they are spying on, and maybe want to see what is going on and must have high-tech technology which will let them give the information to Russia. It can make some people surprised and even other countries as they may start to think about if there is many more people who live in these countries and have a double life.
