Russia has lifted a ban on supplying Iran with a sophisticated air defence missile system, the Kremlin has said.

Delivery of the S-300s was cancelled in 2010 after the UN imposed sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme.

But the Russian president gave the go-ahead after Tehran struck an interim deal with world powers to curb nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

Despite the sanctions, Russia and Iran have remained close allies.

The contract to deliver the system was heavily criticised at the time by Israel and the US, who feared it could be used to protect Iranian nuclear sites from air strikes.

When it was cancelled, Iran filed a lawsuit seeking billions of dollars in damages.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a statement that the sale was put on hold "entirely voluntarily" to aid the talks on Iran's nuclear programme.

The Russian defence ministry said it was now ready to supply the S-300 equipment "promptly", an official there said, quoted by Interfax.

The delivery would be a "step forward", for Russian and Iranian relations, the Iranian Deputy Defence Minister Reza Talainik told the Tasnim news agency.

"I think Russia has returned to the first step and is prepared to act upon its previous undertakings. We hope it will do so and show us its good will," he said.

Israel reacted with dismay to the news.

"This is a direct result of the legitimacy that Iran obtained from the emerging nuclear deal,'' said Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz.

He said it was "proof" Iran planned to use relief from sanctions for arms, rather than the welfare of the Iranian people.

Russia was one of six major world powers to reach an outline agreement with Iran over its nuclear programme.

The sides have set a 30 June deadline to reach a comprehensive deal.

Tough negotiations lie ahead, in particular on how and when to lift sanctions.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry is due to brief Congress, as the Obama administration attempts to persuade opponents not to block the deal's implementation.

He said they should "hold their fire" until they see a final agreement.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has cautioned against seeing the interim agreement as a guarantee of a final deal.

all countries from the coalition should take actions against russia. according to the russian foreign minister they took this step after what happened in yemen! even if the s300 is a defense missile still we should make it clear to russia that its not acceptable.
iran can use the technology to make offensive weapons

Didn't Iran develop a system called "bavar" or whatever ? They say it's equal or even superior to the S300,so i guess they don't need S300s..
bavar373.jpg

They say that they have a missile that has a range of ~200km...
I won't put any comment since i don't really know if it's true or totally bs.

yeah i saw it. its amazing!!
and one more thing. saudi should either buy some f-18 growler or make an f-15 growler based on the F-15SA

The F-15SA is a total different story my friend. The most advanced F-15 ever built from radar to missiles.

The Russians are phasing out the S-300 replacing it with the s-500. The S-400 is going to be phased out as well within a two years for sure. If the Russian did, its going to be restriction free for us on some US European hardware making the outdate s-300 training targets for the RSAF.

Those were glued barrels displayed during a military parade in 2011 if I'm not mistaken. They weren't real. After the Russian objection to the deal the Iranians launch ''Yes We Can'' make like it indicating future project. The current air defense systems Iran has are very useless and old and their missiles aren't guided, free fall in another word.

yeah but the growler is a complete electronic warfare plane fitted in a small jet fighter.
and the bad news they didnt give us the most capable radars on the F-15SA.
the plane it self is the most advanced but the american and isreali planes including the F15 will have a more capable radar

Nope not advanced. The APG-82 has high RCS and that make the jet detectable from far distance higher than the one we have procured.

There is no restrictions on AESA radar. Its all depends on your requirements. The difference in the AESA family is the range and the RCS radar cross section. Your military doctrine determines which one you choose.

Russia signed the deal in 2007 but suspended it because of strong opposition from the U.S. and Israel. (Reuters)

By Staff writer | Al Arabiya News
Monday, 13 April 2015

The Kremlin says Russia has lifted its ban on the delivery of a sophisticated air defense missile system to Iran, the Associated Press reported Monday, in a move which Iran said helps regional security.

Russia signed the $800 million contract to sell Iran the S-300 missile system in 2007, but later suspended their delivery because of strong objections from the United States and Israel.

The decree signed Monday by President Vladimir Putin allows for the delivery of the missiles.

Iran hailed Russia's decision as a step towards "lasting security" in the region.

"The development of bilateral cooperation (with Russia) and with neighbouring countries in various fields can be very effective for lasting stability and security in the region," Defence Minister Hossein Dehqan said, quoted by state news agency IRNA.

White House
Shortly after the announcement, the White House said the decision could raise sanctions concerns.

Israel also slammed the decision saying that Russia's decision is the “direct result” of the international community's framework nuclear deal with the Islamic Republic.

“This is a direct result of the legitimacy that Iran obtained from the emerging nuclear deal,” Cabinet minister Yuval Steinitz said.

Steinitz added that the arms deal shows that Iran plans to use the relief from economic sanctions to buy weapons, not improve the living conditions of its people.

Israel has harshly criticized the U.S.-led nuclear deal, saying it would give Iran relief from sanctions while leaving its nuclear program largely intact. Israel believes Iran still intends to develop a nuclear weapon.

Iran filed a lawsuit with a court in Geneva seeking $4 billion in damages for breach of contract, but the court has not issued a ruling.

Russia has insisted that its decision in 2010 to freeze the S-300 delivery was based on the sanctions the United Nations Security Council imposed on Iran over its nuclear program.

Iran reached a framework deal with world powers this month that is intended to significantly restrict its ability to produce nuclear weapons while giving it relief from international sanctions. The agreement is supposed to be finalized by June 30.

There is no firm agreement on how or when to lift the sanctions.
