The defense-industrial complex has been ordered to step up the production of missiles manufactured for air defense and missile defense complexes by 200%, a source at the Defense Ministry has told TASS

MOSCOW, April 9. /TASS/. Russia’s defense-industrial complex will triple the production of missiles for air defense and missile defense complexes this year in contrast to 2014 parameters, a reliable source at the Defense Ministry has told TASS.

"The defense-industrial complex has been ordered to step up the production of missiles manufactured for air defense and missile defense complexes by 200%, which is to considerably increase the capabilities of the newly-created arm of the Russian armed forces — the Air and Space Force," the source said, adding that the production of missiles would grow by thousands.

"Alongside this the task was set to increase production rates and at the same time reduce the deployment deadlines for new systems and complexes of the air and anti-missile defense in various regions of the country, including Crimea and the Arctic," the source said.

The deputy commander of Russia’s Air and Space Defense Force, Major-General Kirill Makarov, said last week the risk of a potential global strike by the United States was the main reason behind the measures for strengthening the air and anti-missile defense. He said the development of air and anti-missile defense systems was a priority.

The Russian's are so paranoid. They believe the U.S and maybe NATO is planning on attacking them? Well, if more missile defense systems will make them feel safer then more power to them. But I highly doubt that the U.S under Obama is going to declare war on Russia for any reason.

They don't really have a choice in the matter. They have no other ways to persuade their enemies or gain influence other than to project their military might. It's not like they have a lot of friends who have a lot of pull in the international community.

It could be part of an elaborate smokescreen to make the Russian people think they are likely to come under attack so they have to strengthen their defences and spend more money on their military?

The Russian economy is on the verge of collapse so spending money on military hardware can't really be justified to the Russian people.

Unless of course it's to defend themselves from imminent attack...

It's the cold war all over again. But it's imortant to keep in mind that Russia has economy more or less the size of Italy. And I seriously doubt that they can sustian that big of an army. The best way to describe it is the famous drawing: View attachment 753

That's a good point, it's alright spending money on military hardware and recruiting soldiers, but how are they going to be able to maintain them?

Times for the Russian people are hard at the moment and all the government seems to be doing is antagonizing the countries around them. Surely you'd think they'd be better off building bridges than building a bigger army?

That's what you would have thought isn't it? Perhaps this is just another of Putin's little displays, just like the ones Lil' Kim comes out with from time to time. It's all psychological and I doubt that there is any real threat from them right now.

Well the best way to get a countries economy going in the right direction is by trading with other countries, building a few bridges. All they're doing at the moment is cutting their nose off to spite their face.

Threatening other countries and testing how much patience they have isn't going to win them any friends, or is that just the Russian way to do things?

I agree aswell that at this moment Russia isn't a massive threat, that's coming from the middle east and possibly North Korea.

I think Putin maybe thinking the enemy is Russia when in fact it could be someone else and involved in the Ukraine crisis as well and it is getting out of hand as well. I also think getting these weapons and trying to scare other countries will just cause a war to occur and also lives will be sacrificed if this happens. The real threat is the ISIS and rebel groups who want supreme rule and prepared to take lives or die for the cause which they believe is right.

You could even accuse Russia of using the threat in the middle east to its own advantage.

While most of the world has it's eyes firmly fixed on ISIS, Russia is sneakily rebuilding it's military capabilities behind the backs of the other countries.
