Russia tests ASAT-capable missile system

Russia tested an anti-satellite (ASAT) missile system on 15 April, the US Space Command (SPACECOM) announced.

The tested missile system is mobile, and is capable of intercepting satellites in low-earth orbit (LEO), SPACECOM spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Christina Hoggatt said, noting that this made the system that was tested a direct-ascent ASAT (DA ASAT) system rather than a co-orbital ASAT (CO ASAT) system.

The most likely missile system fitting the description is a transporter erector launcher (TEL)-based version of the Nudol system. Lt Col Hoggatt also stated that SPACECOM is not tracking any impact debris, probably indicating that this was a flight test rather than an intercept test.

Russian Completes Development of Typhoon-Airborne Armored Vehicle

Russia has completed the development of a unique armored vehicle that can be air-dropped with troops inside.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement that state trials of the special-purpose vehicle will begin “in the near future.”

Called the K4386 Typhoon-VDV, the 4×4 vehicle accommodating 8 personnel can be airdropped from a heavy-lift armored helicopter straight into the battle-zone without worrying about small arms enemy fire.

The armored vehicle is fitted with an unmanned turret BM-30-D armed with a 30 mm 2A42 automatic cannon, a 7.62 mm PKTM coaxial machinegun and six smoke grenade launchers. Powered by a Kamaz 610.10-350 diesel engine (350 h), the K4386 can run at a maximum road speed of 105 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 1,200 km.

The optoelectronic suite installed above the main gun includes a day/night vision, infrared cameras and a laser rangefinder.

The crew is protected by a cushioned capsule that can survive even if the vehicle is heavily damaged during landing. In addition, the K4386 is amphibious and can wade through 5 feet of water. Its hatch opens downwards allowing crew to quickly jump off the armored vehicle just like the hatch of a transport helicopter.

MOSCOW, May 8. /TASS/. The Project 22350 third-built and second serial-produced frigate Admiral Golovko has been prepared for its float-out, a source in the shipbuilding industry told TASS on Friday.

"The Severnaya Shipyard has prepared the frigate Admiral Golovko for its float-out. A decision on the date will be made by the Defense Ministry of Russia," the source said.

As the source specified, this may take place in May, considering the epidemiological situation.
The press office of the Severnaya Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) declined to comment on the source’s information.

The Severnaya Shipyard earlier built two Project 22350 frigates. The frigate Fleet Admiral Gorshkov has been in service with the Northern Fleet since July 2018. The frigate Fleet Admiral Kasatonov has completed its trials and is preparing for its delivery to the Russian Navy. The frigate Fleet Admiral Isakov is currently under construction at the Shipyard.

On April 23, 2019, the Severnaya Shipyard laid down two modernized Project 22350 frigates. Two more frigates are expected to be laid down soon.
Project 22350 frigates carry two Kalibr-NK and/or Oniks universal shipborne launchers of eight missiles each. The frigate Admiral Gorshkov is taking part in the trials of the Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile.

Project 22350 frigates are expected to become the Russian Navy’s most advanced warships in their class. These frigates displace 4,500 tonnes and can develop a speed of 29 knots. In addition to Oniks and Kalibr cruise missiles, they are armed with Poliment-Redut air defense missile systems.

MOSCOW, May 8. /TASS/. The Zvyozdochka shipyard plans to finish the preparation of the Admiral Kuznetsov heavy aircraft carrier for sea trials after repairs and upgrades by fall 2022, the state procurement website indicates.

The shipyard has posted a contract on painting the carrier’s outer surface before September 1, 2022. For that the shipyard plans to allocate over 250 million rubles ($3,402,500) and will receive applications until May 20.

In line with widespread practice, after the painting is done, a ship goes to sea trials.
The shipyard press service confirmed the plans, but noted that all works would be performed amid heightened security measures considering the coronavirus pandemic.

Currently, the Admiral Kuznetsov stays in the 35th shipyard (Zvyozdochka subsidiary in Murmansk). Its commissioning is planned for 2022.

Repairs and upgrades
The Admiral Kuznetsov was sent for repairs in 2017 following a mission in Syria. The carrier will be equipped with the new air defense systems, including the Pantsir-M. Besides, the ship will get new energy equipment, new boilers, pumps and new flight systems, namely landing, observation and control systems.

Since the beginning of repairs, there were two emergencies that caused deaths. On October 30, 2018, when the ship exited the floating dock, the dock began sinking. Due to the resulting lurch, a crane fell on the carrier’s deck, killing one. On December 12, 2019, a fire broke out on the ship. Two people died extinguishing it.

Russian Armed Forces May Get First Next-Generation S-500 Missile Systems in 2021

Earlier this year, Pavel Sozinov, general designer at the Russian defence concern Almaz-Antey, touted the S-500 as a missile system that is capable of intercepting targets located hundreds of kilometres above the Earth.
The Russian Armed Forces may get the first advanced S-500 missile systems next year, the country’s Deputy Defence Minister Alexei Krivoruchko has said in an interview with the magazine Natsionalnaya Oborona (National Defence).
According to him, the conclusion of a state contract for S-500s is scheduled for 2021, with wide-scale deliveries expected in subsequent years.
Krivoruchko also referred to a stage of the S-500-related preliminary tests, with "the material part currently at the training ground”.
The statement echoes that of Vladimir Dolbenkov, director-general of the Design Bureau for Special Machine-Building (part of Almaz-Antey), who said in late March that tests for certain elements of “the next-generation Triumfator-M mobile air defence system S-500”, including its launcher, “[…] were being completed”.

This followed Almaz-Antey general designer Pavel Sozinov touting the S-500 as an air defence system that will be able to intercept targets “in the upper atmosphere”, hundreds of kilometres above the Earth.

He stressed that according to its specifications, the S-500 exceeds all similar missile systems that have been created or are being designed in developed countries.

Sozinov said that the Russian missile system comprises a large number of various target detection and interception tools as well as ground-to-air guided missiles. "This is a system that accomplishes a wide range of tasks for both air defence and missile defence purposes”, he emphasised.

The S-500 Prometey, also known as 55R6M "Triumfator-M", is a Russian surface-to-air missile/anti-ballistic missile system designed to replace the S-400.

With the S-500's specifications still officially classified, media reports have claimed that the system is capable of destroying targets up to 600 kilometres (372 miles) away.

It reportedly can track and simultaneously strike up to 10 ballistic targets moving at speeds of up to 7 kilometres (4 miles) per second (about Mach 20). The system is also capable of hitting various aerodynamic targets, including aircraft and helicopters, as well as cruise missiles.

MOSCOW, /TASS/. The second submarine to serve as a basic carrier of Russia’s Poseidon nuclear-capable underwater drones will be floated out approximately in late June, a defense industry source told TASS on Thursday.

"The Khabarovsk [Project 09852] will be floated out in late June at the earliest. There is no exact date so far," the source said.

The Russian Navy’s press service did not comment on the information. The Sevmash shipyard where the submarine is being built was not immediately available for a comment.

The first basic carrier of Poseidon drones, a Project 09852 special-purpose nuclear sub, the Belgorod, was floated out on April 23, 2019 and is expected to enter service with the Russian Navy in September. The Belgorod and the Khabarovsk are expected to carry six Poseidon drones each.

In his state-of-the-nation address to both houses of Russia’s parliament on March 1, 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned for the first time the country’s efforts to develop a nuclear-powered unmanned underwater vehicle that can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads and is capable of destroying enemy infrastructural facilities, aircraft carrier groups and other targets.

Poseidon drones together with their carriers - nuclear-powered submarines - make part of the so-called oceanic multipurpose system. A source in the defense industry earlier told TASS that the Poseidon drone would be capable of carrying a nuclear warhead with a yield of up to 2 megatonnes to destroy enemy naval bases.

According to reported data, the Poseidon will feature an intercontinental range capability and an operational depth of over 1 km.

MOSCOW, May 10. /TASS/. On the day of the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War 36 military academies across the nation held graduation ceremonies, the Russian Defense Ministry said, adding that 12,000 newly-commissioned lieutenants would join the armed forces.
Among the new-comers to the Russian officers’ corps there are 260 women. According to the Defense Ministry, one in five former cadets graduated with honors.

MOSCOW, May 6. /TASS/. The Project 955A (Borei-A) first upgraded strategic nuclear-powered submarine Knyaz Vladimir may be delivered to the Russian Navy in late May, a source in the defense industry told TASS on Wednesday.

"The Sevmash shipbuilders have prepared the cruiser for its delivery. The date of its transfer is being decided. This may take place in late May," the source said.

The Russian Navy’s press office declined to comment on the information provided by the source. TASS has no comment from the Sevmash Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) on this score so far.

The Knyaz Vladimir is the improved Project 955A strategic missile-carrying underwater cruiser, which represents the fourth generation of nuclear-powered subs built for the Russian Navy. It was floated out in November 2017. According to the data of Russia’s Defense Ministry, the sub Knyaz Vladimir is less noisy and features improved maneuvering, depth and armament control systems.

The nuclear-powered sub Knyaz Vladimir has fully undergone state trials. In the autumn of 2019, it test-fired a Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile.

Four more Borei-A submarines are at various stages of their construction. Also, a contract has been signed for building two more missile-carrying underwater cruisers of this Project. There are also plans to build two more Borei-A subs.

Project 955 and Project 955A submarines have been developed by the Rubin Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation). All Borei-class submarines carry 16 Bulava ballistic missiles. They are also furnished with 533mm torpedo tubes. Currently, three Project 955 nuclear-powered missile-carrying subs are operational in the Russian Northern and Pacific Fleets.

MOSCOW, /TASS/. The Project 11711 large amphibious assault ship Pyotr Morgunov will resume sea trials no sooner than the second half of May, a source in the shipbuilding industry told TASS on Wednesday.

"The shipbuilders’ sea trials may resume in the second half of May. The exact date for the large amphibious assault ship to take to the sea will be determined after the May holidays are over," the source said.

The shipbuilders’ sea trials of the large amphibious assault ship Pyotr Morgunov were earlier expected to restart in the second half of April but were later postponed to the beginning of May. After that, the warship’s state trials were expected to begin. The shipbuilders planned to deliver the large amphibious assault ship to the Russian Navy in late May. The source did not specify the reasons for the delay in the resumption of the warship’s sea trials.

The press office of Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation, which integrates the Yantar Shipyard where the large amphibious assault ship is being built, reported on March 31 that the program of the warship’s sea trials was over 50% fulfilled. According to the Corporation’s press office, the large amphibious assault ship Pyotr Morgunov returned to the Shipyard on March 30 after its new deployment to the sea under the program of the shipbuilders’ sea trials.

The Pyotr Morgunov is the first serial-produced Project 11711 warship designed by the Nevskoye Design Bureau. The contract on the warship’s construction was concluded with Russia’s Defense Ministry in September 2014 and the warship was laid down in June 2015.

The Pyotr Morgunov is the largest in its class and displaces 5,000 tonnes. The warship is expected to be accepted for service in the Russian Navy after all of its trials are over.

The Pyotr Morgunov will be able to take on its board 13 main battle tanks, or 36 armored personnel carriers or infantry fighting vehicles. An option is envisaged for taking a marine infantry battalion on its board.

The amphibious assault ship can also transport a reinforced marine infantry company with organic military hardware and land it with the use of pontoons.

The amphibious assault ship is armed with 30mm six-barrel artillery guns and two Kamov Ka-29 transport/attack helicopters in its deck hangars.
The Project’s lead ship Ivan Gren was floated out in Kaliningrad in May 2012. It was accepted for service in the Russian Navy on June 20, 2018.

MOSCOW,/TASS/. The Russian Armed Forces will get more than 30 new Tornado family multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) in 2020, the Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

"The delivery of more than thirty modern multiple launch rocket systems to units of rocket troops and artillery of the Russian Federation Armed Forces is planned by the end of this year. Tornado-G and Tornado-S MLRS will be handed over by manufacturing companies to the Russian Defense Ministry within the framework of performing the state defense order," the Ministry said.

The Russian 300-mm MLRS Tornado-S comprises an upgraded combat vehicle equipped with an automated fire control system, new rockets and corrected rockets with the separated high explosive element. The 122-mm MLRS Tornado-G is intended for firing against manpower, armored vehicles, artillery batteries and command posts.

Russian Missile Forces in Baltic Region Conduct Drills Amid Ongoing NATO Exercises Nearby

US and Polish forces kicked off large-scale ground-based drills dubbed ‘Allied Spirit’ in northwestern Poland on June 4, while a NATO maritime exercise called ‘BALTOPS 20’ in the Baltic region got underway on June 7.
Iskander missile units from the Russian Baltic Fleet’s coastal defence forces have carried out mock conventional missile strike drills.
“As part of planned combat training activities of Baltic Fleet forces in the Kaliningrad region, training in the delivery of mock conventional missile strikes was conducted using Iskander operational tactical units. The Baltic Fleet’s combat training activities were held against the background of the NATO BALTOPS 20 naval exercises taking place in the Baltic Sea,” the fleet said in a statement on Sunday.
The drills were said to have involved the covert deployment of the missile launchers to their designated areas and, once deployed, mock electronic single and group launches on targets simulating enemy missile launchers, military airbases, defended targets and command posts. After performing the launches, the units quickly changed their position to avoid a simulated retaliation.

Additionally, the combat units worked under conditions of simulated radiation and chemical contamination of the area, and in the repelling of an attack by enemy sabotage and reconnaissance units.

“Special attention was paid to improving the coordination of crews and units, the professional skills of personnel when moving to the designated areas and disguising their military vehicles,” the Fleet said in its statement.

Over 200 military personnel and about 20 pieces of military equipment were said to have been involved in the drill.

The Iskander missile system is a road-mobile short-range ballistic missile carrier with a range of 50-500 km, and can be armed with a variety of conventional and nuclear charges, as well as an EMP charge.

Nearby, NATO is continuing its BALTOPS 20 drills, which began on June 7 and are set to run until June 16 in the Baltic Sea region. The maritime-focused exercises are thought to involve some 28 warships, over two dozen aircraft and 3,000 personnel from 17 NATO countries, as well as Finland and Sweden. The drills are being commanded from NATO’s ‘Naval Striking and Support Forces’ headquarters in Portugal.

Meanwhile, in Poland, US and Polish forces kicked off the ‘Allied Spirit’ airborne and division-size river crossing drills on June 5, with the drills expected to run until June 19. Those exercises are said to involve some 4,000 US troops and 2,000 Polish army personnel, along with 100 main battle tanks, 230 other armoured vehicles, artillery and aviation.

On Thursday, the Baltic Fleet staged a separate, aerial drill involving a dozen Su-24, Su-27 and Su-30 aircraft against simulated maritime targets in the Baltic Sea.

The resumed NATO drilling near Russia’s borders comes following the scaling down of plans to deploy some 37,000 troops, including some 20,000 US troops airlifted from the United States, for exercises in Germany, Poland and the Baltic countries earlier this year. Those drills, dubbed the Defender Europe 20, were put on hold in March amid fears that they would cause a spike in coronavirus infections among military personnel.

On Friday, the US Army said it still plans to engage up to 1,000 US troops in a second phase of the Defender Europe 20 drills in Germany later this summer, along with several other exercises on the continent.
