The Russian Navy formally activated its first Project 18280 intelligence ship, the Admiral Yuri Ivanov , as part of the Navy Day celebrations on 26 July.
Russian President Vladimir Putin inspected the vessel at the Baltic port of Baltiysk, in the country's Kaliningrad exclave, with the formal flag raising ceremony taking place during the review.
According to Vladimir Matveev, head of the Baltic Fleet's press service: "The newest signals' intelligence ship is built to meet the navies latest requirements ... designed to conduct signals intelligence and electronic warfare, and to track all elements of the US missile defence system".
Its other roles include ensuring secure fleet command, control and communications (C3I).
