Apparently the Russians have come to realize that the war against terrorism and ISIS won't be ending any time soon, their Prime Minister now says they don't intend to stay in Syria forever.

Russian PM says military won't stay in Syria for ever| Reuters

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview that Moscow does not plan to maintain its military presence in Syria indefinitely.

In an interview with Time magazine Medvedev was asked if Russia would help its ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, in his stated aim of restoring his control over all of Syria.

"We have no plans... for such a never-ending presence in Syria. We are there pursuing an entirely limited, concrete objective," Medvedev said, according to a transcript of the interview released by the government.

It was obvious that the Russian used the strikes against Isis as a ploy to help up the Syrian Army, to enable it to defeat the rebels who are trying to topple the Assad regime. I must admit, however, that Isis is also a threat to the Government of Syria but the bigger picture was to bolster the capabilities of Assad's army, to ensure that he is able to maintain power

I had been saying that over and over - the war in Syrian will never end unless the superpowers would unite to annihilate not only ISIS but also the rebels there. Now it is clear that Russia and US are using Syria as a playground to show off their military muscle, it is a waste for other countries to be involved in that war. At least now Russia is thinking of ceasing its support for the government of Assad, maybe hoping that the US would also refrain from aiding the rebels there.

They did what they needed to do - and pretty quickly. Assad is back on his feet and is now NOT looking for a truce with rebels. Plus, Russians don't like to maintain foreign bases, unless they're in Ukraine.

At least, they're pulling back. That's a commendable attitude. You can't fight a war with a terrorist group in a foreign without the help country's government and constant opposition from other countries. They did wheat they were there to do, and now they're planning to leave. It's a solid diplomatic move on the part of Russia.

I think that the war will be a long one which can be neverending as the military feels that it won't end and the war will have many casualties and also I think that one day the war will end when rebel groups have been destroyed and also the ISIS groups which are in a big number around the world and hope we see results when the powerful countries join hands to end this. The battle in Syria is going to be a long one and also I think that more needs to be done so that the war gets controlled and also people don't feel safe in the country, thats why they are moving away from there and safety is not guaranteed due to terroisim occuring over there. I think that more support needs to be given as the governments needs to do more as this is a battle which is not going to end anytime soon and hope Russia does more and we see USA give aide as well which will be a good thing and may give support which is needed.

It might not up to them if they want to keep Assad in power.
Now it is clearly a proxy war between Russia, the US, and maybe a few other smaller players. One side decided to fund the "rebel" to overthrow Assad, and Russia decided to help Assad to secure his power in Syria. There will be no end to it any time soon just like in Afghanistan.

Although Russia can avoid being in the exact same situation as in Afghanistan by not sending in more ground troops necessary for guarding their air and naval bases, and do not send in ground troops into actual combat zone. This way they might actually benefit by keep a place to test their weapon systems, tactics, as well as a ground to train their troops without suffering more than a few casualty here and there every year.

But once they leave without completely wiping out all oppositions to Assad, the "rebel" will get stronger again under the support of the US and other parties. Unless the US gives up its support and abandon the plan of overthrowing Assad all together.
