Sweden's Saab has offered its A26 submarine to the Royal Thai Navy (RTN), military and industry officials have confirmed to IHS Jane's .

The offer was made in early April before the RTN officially submitted to government on 24 April its plan to procure up to three submarines by the end of the decade. The programme is understood to have a value of THB36 billion (USD1.1 billion).

RTN officials said that the meeting with Saab was one of several that have been set up with potential contractors before the RTN issues a request for proposals later this year if the plan receives government approval.

The government has already given strong indication that it will support the programme with funds sourced over the next few years. A submarine procurement committee - headed by Admiral Narongpol na Bangchang, assistant commander-in-chief of the RTN - has also been established within the RTN.

A spokeswoman from Saab confirmed that the A26 has been offered as a potential capability for the RTN, although she stressed that the programme is still in its early stages.

"We are monitoring the progress of the RTN's plans … but uncertainties in terms of the budget, timelines, etc, have made us wait until we know more," said the spokeswoman. "Saab has provided some limited information to the RTN primarily for information purposes."

The A26 submarine programme is currently under development, but received a major boost in March when the Swedish government approved a plan to purchase two platforms for SEK8.2 billion (USD943 million), with delivery by 2022. Saab agreed to acquire the A26 designer - Swedish naval shipbuilder Kockums - in June 2014.

IHS Jane's has previously reported that the A26 design displaces 1,900 tonnes, has a length of 65.5 m and a draft of 6 m.

The Saab A26 is the sixth submarine platform presented to the RTN in 2015. Others include South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries' HDS-500RTN, a custom-designed midget submarine; Russia's Kilo-class Project 636 submarine; China's Yuan-class (Type 041) platform; and two designs offered by Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems - the Type 209/1400mod and the smaller Type 210mod.

Swedish defense companies are heavily involved in Saudi Arabia. Our relation with Sweden has not changed despite the childish immature and irresponsible remarks of the Swedish foreign ministry.
