When we talk about Air Defense in modern theater of warfare, SAMs (surface to air missiles) are one of most effective weapons against aerial threats as it can swiftly neutralize such threats at farther ranges. During cold war, both USA and USSR invested heavily in SAMs. USSR introduced a number of SAM systems since start of cold war including Tunguska (Sa-19 Grison) belonging to the LOMAD (low to medium air defense system) family of AD (air defense) systems. After the cold war Russia needed modification in its AD weapons and hence, they created Pantsir S-1 (SA-22 Grey Hound) as the replacement of Tunguska.

The Pantsir S-1 missile system is a self-propelled surface-to-air missile system. It is designed to provide point air defense of the vulnerable points (VPs) against aircraft, helicopter, precision munitions, cruise missiles, and unmanned air vehicles. The Pantsir S-1 is highly mobile and uses a search and acquisition radar for searching the tgt (target) and a dual waveband tracking radar that operates in the UHF and EHF waveband for guiding of the missiles and the AA Gun. The detection range is 19 nm or 36 km and the tracking range is 15 nm or 28 km for a target having RCS of 2m^2. The system has a 360-degree coverage and both the sensors use passive electronically scanned array. There is also a thermal imaging sensor that is capable of detecting, acquiring and tracking targets even in low visibility conditions.

Pantsir S-1 is unique system in its class as it is a LOMAD as well as a SHORAD (short to medium range air defense system) thanks to the inclusion of anti-aircraft artillery in a single platform. There are 12 tubes of surface-to-air missiles having the 57E6 missiles (a two-stage solid-fuel radio command guided missile) or 57E6-E (in export variants). The missile tubes are arranged into two groups of 6 sealed, ready to launch container tubes on the turret. The missiles have a range of 20 km or 11 nm, a maximum speed of Mach 3, altitude coverage of 50000 ft and carry a 20 kg high explosive fragmentation warhead. Anti-aircraft artillery is the two dual 2A38M, 30 mm autocannon that are fitted with 1400 rounds. The crew can choose the kind of ammunitions depending on the nature of the target which includes high explosive fragmentation or armor-piercing rounds. The maximum rate of fire is 5000 rounds per minute per gun. The cannon has a range of 4 km or 2nm up to an altitude of 3km or 10000 feet and possess a secondary capability to attack ground targets.

The system in discussion can be mounted on wheeled or track trucks or can be used as fixed Air defense system on ground and is also available in container variant as well as a special version for use in arctic (icy terrain) conditions is also there that is mounted on an articulated track vehicle.

Due to high mobility the system is also available to commit while on the move which makes it a very potent threat to enemy CAS (close air support) assets in the air. Several upgraded Pantsir variants are also in development. The Pantsir-SM, announced in 2016, will supposedly feature a detection range of up to 75 km and an engagement range of 40 km. Russia first tested the Pantsir-SM in early 2019. An export variant of the Pantsir-SM, the Pantsir-S1M, incorporates a new missile and features an engagement range of 30 km.
The system components of a Pantsir S-1 battery include a command and control post, combat vehicle, maintenance vehicles and missile loader. Optionally it also incorporates a simulator for the purpose of training of Air Defense Controllers. Training aids make it possible to efficiently train personnel in tgt engagement at minimal costs to ensure high results in actual combat

Link-17 TDL (Tactical Data Link)

Link-17 is Pakistan's homegrown , indegenous tactical data link system. Tactical Data link system is part of Network Centric System which enable it operators to transmit and share Data.

This in turn provides Beyond-sight information to its operator , command and respondent. It even guides TDL compaitable Munitions such as Beyond Visual Range air-to-air Missiles, Anti-Ship missiles etc.

For example Fighter Aircraft on patrol have limited situational awareness because of low power radar, censors and mountain curvatures, bends, nature etc this restrictions is eradicated by Data-Link, where an AW&E platform transmit real-time or near-real time situation of upcoming threats to be addressed.

Link-17 Pakistan Indegenous TDL system allows information sharing capability between different ascessts of PAF. Link-17 enables to share information among JF-17 Thunders. This is major advancement in PAF's capability. It would enable to Link-17 compaitable fighter fleet of PAF to tackle upcoming threats, for example target beyond JF-17 radar range could be counter by firing SD-10 A, which would be guided in midcourse by TDL Link-17, through powerful radar in ZDK-03 AWACs.
Link-17 isn't limited to Airforce only, it's flexible enough to interoperate with rest of Forces as well with MIDS(Multi information Distribution system) method, it enables land based or sea based survivelnace radar to share information with AWACs which further through TDL is shared with command/respondent.
In 2015 PAF and Navy conducted joint exercise in which ZDK-03 and JF-17 Thunder participated. JF-17 Thunder with Anti-Ship role was logical , but ZDK-03 was indicating concept of Network Centric System and specially Link-17.

FIM-92 Stinger is a Man-Portable Air-Defense System (MANPADS) that operates as an infrared homing surface-to-air missile (SAM). It was produced by United States (“Raytheon Missile Systems/General Dynamics”) & entered service in 1981. It provides high accuracy and enhanced air defense capabilities to the armed forces.

Stringer is highly accurate & its missile is guided by proportional navigation. Missile has a length of 1.52m, a diameter of 7.62cm and fin span of 10.16cm. The system weighs around 10kg, while the total weight including that of grip stock is 15.87kg.

The Stinger missile system is equipped with a conventional high-explosive, penetrating hit-to-kill warhead. The lethal warhead weighs 3kg. The propulsion system ensures the missile to operate at a maximum altitude of approximately 10,000ft and provides a maximum range of five miles (5 Miles).

As per sources Pakistan operates around 500 units of FIM-92 Stinger. It provides Pakistan a lethal capability to shot down enemy aircrafts flying at low altitude.

RBS-70

RBS-70 or Robot System 70 is a man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS) designed by Sweden’s Saab Bofors Dynamics. RBS 70 comprises of missile in a launch container, a tripod firing stand and an optical sight. The missile is equipped with a solid propellant booster motor & it has a laser beam detector mounted at the back. Maximum range of RBS-70 is 8000 m at the altitude of 4000 m.

Pakistan Army operates around 140 units of RBS-70 MANPADS. It provides Pakistan a lethal capability to shot down enemy aircrafts flying at low altitude.

QW-18 MANPAD

Gentlemen, With the growing need of air defence cover in modern warfare the need of terminal defence weapons cannot be denied. Today we are discussing one such weapon of Chinese origin that is QW-18 MANPAD(Man Portable Air Defence System).

QW-18 is quite a capable weapon to counter aerial threats, it has range of 6KM with 4KM Celling with speed of 600m/s. The QW-18 missile is capable of to pull 16Gs as well.
Most important capability is high Anti-jamming performance, it's dual band IR seeker helps to track target not only through exaust but temperature difference of fighter as well, giving more chances to stand against Flares and ECMs. Also this multi-tracking capbility will give it more advantage in all-aspect attack actions and more reliability against extremely low flying targets. Pakistan is already using Anza MkII and MKIII along with FN-6 and Fn-16s which are even more advance then Qw-18 in it's inventory. Perhaps Pakistan is looking up to get more command in this regard. Recent Anza MKIII was also speculated to be QW-2 derivative with more improvements for Pakistan Armed Forces.
