Saudi Arabia and France agreed Wednesday to sign $12 billion of defense deals, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubair said during a visit by Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to Paris.

Jubair, who was speaking during a press conference with his French counterpart, said that arms agreements with France were among Wednesday’s discussions.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said that the ten contracts include 23 Airbus H145 helicopters worth $500 million.

The H145, previously known as the EC145, is a light twin-engine helicopter typically used for emergency services and border patrols.

Nuclear reactors
Fabius also said that Saudi Arabia was planning to sign off on a feasibility study for the construction of two nuclear reactors in the kingdom with France.

Speaking about the nuclear reactors, Jubeir said that Saudi was keen to acquire advanced technology from France.

Meanwhile, the Saudi defense minister said he was still discussing the price for a contract for French naval patrol boats, built by DCNS, Reuters reported.

The contracts, which highlight Paris' growing commercial ties in the Middle East, are the latest to be agreed between France and a Gulf Arab state.

They come after French President Francois Hollande was invited by Gulf Arab leaders in May to address their summit in Saudi Arabia, a role not often given to a foreign head of state.

This is the first I've heard of this, and I wasn't aware the two countries were particularly close. I wonder what Saudi Arabia is looking to protect itself from, other than ISIS?

I only heard that KSA will buy 23 H145 and (apparently) agreed to buy some patrol boats.
Let's wait and see for the rest.

We've many enemies,we know some of them but some we don't. Moreover, it is our duty to stand with our friends when they ask us for help. In the Middle East, we're living an arm race between the regional powers in region. If you don't have a strong army to be " hard to get " in your enemy's eyes, your people won't live the normal life that other people in rest of the world have. And your country will not be a " sovereign country ". Many will violate your sovereignty and try to intervene in your affairs , then neither the UN will save you nor your closest ally. Look at Iran, they are intervening using their militias in Syria ,Iraq then they came to Yemen ! But once they saw the coalition started the mission of ‘‘ Decisive Storm ‘‘ in order to end the presence of Iran in Yemen , the Iranians kept watching and threaten us without deeds because they can't carry the results if they'll think to mess with us.

The western people don't understand the dynamic of the Middle East and how things are in term of politics, regional issues to be precise....conflicts..etc
