On Sunday evening flying shrapnel triggered by explosions at an ammo depot in Colombo destroyed hundreds of homes and a hospital in Sri Lanka's capital city. At least one soldier was killed while nearly 50 civilians were treated for smoke inhalation and other injuries.

It's not the first time there's been an explosion in an ammunition storage facility.

This is clearly a manifestation of neglect and no one but the people responsible for the operations of that ammunition depot. Besides damaging numerous properties and threatening the lives of civilians, the storage facility is obviously not operating according to established safety standards. Otherwise, such an incident wouldn't have occurred. The government has to take responsibility. They should also relocate ammo depots to secluded areas, away from residential homes and public institutions.

Its an accident waiting to happen to locate ammunition dumps near civilian and even inhabited areas. I assumed that ammo dumps are supposed to be highly reinforced to contain the force of the blasts. This is not the first time this has happened, but it seems countries are not learning from the dangerous experiences of others.
