TF-X - Turkish Fighter Next Generation

mmu-galeri--2-large.jpg.png

In order to meet Turkish Air Force (TurAF) requirements beyond 2030s, an indigenous design and development program has been launched by the Turkish Government which aims to replace the aging F-16 fleet of TurAF.

Within the scope of TF-X Program, Turkey will become one of the few countries to possess the necessary technologies, engineering infrastructure and production capabilities. Once the engineering activities on all the critical technologies are accomplished (e.g. increased situational awareness, sensor fusion, low observability, weapon bay, …etc), which are needed by a 5th generation (or beyond) jet fighter aircraft.

TF-X aircraft is planned to be kept operational in the TurAF inventory until 2070s and will be interoperable with other critical assets of TurAF such as F-35As.
The TF-X indigenous design and development program prime contract between Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) of Ministry of Turkish National Defence and Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. (TAI) has been signed on 5th of August 2016.

The timing of this signature alone, is a key demonstrator of Turkey’s determination of running mega-projects uninterruptedly, even under extra-ordinary conditions.
Currently, the prime contract covers the initial four (4) years (starting after signature of major subcontracts) which will end up with completion of preliminary design phase. Within this period beyond the design and development of TF-X Aircraft, engineering capabilities, technology development activities (for key sensors like radar, electronic warfare..etc.), test infrastructures establishment and certification processes will be performed and extensive capabilities for a new generation jet fighter design, development and production will be gained by Turkish industry.

TF-X aircraft will be a multi-role aircraft, it will be designed mainly for air-to-air role with a consideration to air-to-surface roles as well. Upon engineering analysis, TF-X aircraft will be a multi-role aircraft, it will be designed mainly for air-to-air role with a consideration to air-to-surface roles as well. Upon engineering analysis, preliminary calculations, based on received information of suppliers of candidate engines, TF-X aircraft is decided to be a twin engine configuration.

In this regard a Heads of Agreement (HoA) has been signed between TAI and BAE Systems on 28th of January 2017, in the presence of the Prime Ministers of Turkey and the United Kingdom. In addition, the Letter of Agreement (LOA) has been signed during the IDEF 2017. The TAI-BAE Systems Collaboration Agreement was signed and entered in to effect on 25th of August 2017.

One of the key ambition and consideration of SSM and TurAF, which is also shared by Turkish Industry as well, is the exportability of TF-X aircraft to key allies and friendly countries. In this regard, Turkey also welcomes to discuss any opportunities for participation of interested countries in a win-win model to be generated, where similar examples are also seen in different parts of the world.

TAI lists official specifications of next-gen fighter TFX
by Bilal Khan
Dec 17, 2017

Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) has released the official specifications of the TFX, officially known as the Milli Muharebe Uçağı (National Combat Aircraft).

As listed on the TAI website, the TFX will have a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 27,215 kg, length of 19 m and wingspan of 12 m. It will use two turbofan engines, each with 9072 kgf in thrust output.

In terms of performance, the TFX is to have an operational radius of over 1,111 km and a flight ceiling of over 16,764 m (i.e. 55,000 ft). It will have a maximum speed of Mach 2. TAI did not release the maximum payload or empty take-off weight of the TFX.

In its statement for the TFX’s profile, TAI stated that the TFX “is envisaged … [to] work with F-35A planes planned to enter the inventory of the Turkish Air Force,” adding that TFX production will run until 2070.

Under Ankara’s policy of domestically sourcing defence equipment, TAI and its Turkish industry partners aim to manufacture the TFX’s low radar cross-section airframe, engine, munitions, situational awareness elements and it sensor fusion inputs indigenously in Turkey.
On November 28, Turkey’s Minister of Defence (MoD) Nurettin Canikli said that TAI, the MoD and Turkey’s Undersecretariat of Defence Industries (SSM) remained committed to achieving a maiden test flight for the TFX in 2023, stating it was the “primary goal” of the Turkish government.

In January, the TAI and the SSM awarded BAE Systems a contract worth over £100 million to help design the TFX. Under the four-year contract, BAE is to provide “400 man/years” of engineering consulting and technical support work to TAI. Upon its completion, BAE is expected to receive another contract to support the development of the TFX in Turkey.

In regards to the TFX turbofan engine program, the Turkish MoD emphasized that it was still looking at its options. Although the UK government has provided an ‘Open General Export License’ to Turkey, enabling Rolls-Royce to partner with the private Turkish company Kale Group to form TAEC Uçak Motor Sanayi AS.

Co-owned by Kale Group (51%) and Rolls-Royce (49%), TAEC was formed in May to develop and produce a turbofan engine in Turkey for the TFX. MSI Turkish Defence Review reported that Rolls-Royce will also train 350 Turkish engineers and utilize Turkish technical capacities as part of the development process.

However, the Turkish MoD told journalists that Turkey is not looking to depend on one country on the TFX program, stating, “When you work with a single company, or when you depend on a single country, you could face different problems in certain stages of the project.”
The Turkish defence publication C4Defence reported on December 15 that TUSAŞ Engine A.Ş. (TEI) – which is co-owned by TAI (50.5%), General Electric (46.2%) and the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation and Turkish Aeronautical Association (3.3%) – has also submitted its own engine proposal to the SSM.

Although it is not known how the TEI turbofan program is slated to manifest, it should be noted that TEI is undertaking its own design and development work as well as licensed manufacturing. For example, for the Turkish T-70 Black Hawk helicopter program, TEI will manufacture the General Electric (GE) T700-GE-701D turboshaft engine under license. However, TEI is also spearheading the development of a 1,400 shp turboshaft engine for the TAI T-625 utility helicopter and TAI ATAK-2 attack helicopter.

Rolls Royce eyes producing Turkish jet TF-X’s engines
ISTANBUL
October 23, 2017
British automotive and aviation giant Rolls Royce aims to produce the engine for Turkey's national fighter jet TF-X, which will be produced by Turkey and British company BAE Systems.

The provisions of an umbrella license will be applied to the agreement regarding the national fighter jet TF-X signed between Turkey and British giant BAE Systems. The umbrella license eliminates the need for a separate license for all parts and systems used in the production of the aircraft. Systems developed and produced in this regard will also be used in third countries.

According to a report by Habertürk, the U.K. recently issued an open general export license to allow for the transfer of materials, software and technology to be employed in the national fighter jet TF-X project.

Accordingly, another important step has been taken in the design and production of a modern fighter jet that suits the needs of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), enables the maximum use of domestic facilities and is capable of replacing F-16 fighter jets from 2020 onwards.

In the scope of this project, realized in collaboration between British BAE Systems and main contractor Turkish Aerospace Industries, Inc. (TAI), the licensure paves the way for collaboration in various fields, as well as for developed technology sales with third countries.

Regarding the future stages of the project, the license will likely be updated according to changing requirements. The umbrella license, which supports and encourages the transfer of technology, will include all U.K. companies that take part in the TF-X project in the future and companies will not need to apply for a separate license. British BAE Systems has signed a framework agreement with TAI for the first design phase of the TF-X project. In the next stage, the fighter jet engine and the company to undertake the project will be selected. While British Rolls Royce eyes engine production, the Turkish Kale Group aspires to produce the engine for the fifth-generation TFX warplane as does the British automotive giant.

In the scope of this vital project, the issuance of the umbrella license indicates U.K. aims to prevent the aircraft industry from becoming idle over time, ensuring that the infrastructure of industrial production remains active in the fifth-generation aircraft project

The top body of Turkey’s defense industry has started cooperating with United Kingdom-based Rolls-Royce on the engine to power the country’s National Combat Aircraft (MMU), the head of the authority said Saturday.

In a televised program on broadcaster CNN Türk, Ismail Demir, head of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB), commented on the developments regarding the MMU, a long-awaited domestic defense industry project.

The TF-X MMU, which is a fifth-generation jet with similar features to Lockheed Martin's F-35 Lightning II, is being developed by the local defense industry with the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) as the main contractor.

Stating that there is an alternative engine option in addition to the F-110 engine to be supplied from the U.S., Demir noted: “We also had the possibility of working with Rolls-Royce for the engine."

“We previously had some concerns (about this cooperation),” he said; however, the company resolved these concerns as a result of the meetings held.

“The work has begun,” he added.

Demir, back in March 2021, stated that the British company didn't have an engine for this particular aircraft and that the company was offering to develop an engine for the MMU with a partnership it established in Turkey.

However, there were conditions that the Turkish side didn’t accept, Demir said at the time, and added that once the company is ready, Turkey was in a position to boost the business to a better standing.

Open sources overwhelmingly suggest that Turkey’s TRMotor and Rolls-Royce will work together to develop an engine for the MMU.
Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce has close relations with another Turkish company, the Kale Group, as well.

The Kale research and development (R&D) company, under the roof of the Kale Group, has domestically developed turbojet missile engines that power Turkish missiles.

The national fighter jet is scheduled to exit the hangar in 2023, make its maiden flight in 2025 or 2026, and be added to the Turkish Armed Forces' (TSK) inventory in 2029
