Abbas to focus on Jerusalem in speech to U.N. Security Council

Feb. 20 (UPI) -- In his speech to the United Nations on Tuesday, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas will confront the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Palestinian spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said Abbas would center his speech around "Al-Quds," or Jerusalem, and on basic Palestinian principles.

"A new phase has begun in the struggle to preserve the overall goal of our Palestinian people, the Arab nation and the world as a whole, and this is the issue of Al-Quds, with its holy sites to Islam and Christianity, its heritage and history, which some are trying to counterfeit by contradicting all international laws which have always established that Al-Quds is Palestinian and Arab," Abu Rudeina said.

According to Foreign Minister Riyad Malki, the Palestinian leader is expected to provide the U.N. Security Council with a new peace initiative and plan.

Abbas will likely advocate for the establishment of a Palestinian state and a two-state solution.

In his speech, Abbas will also propose ideas to the security council on how to counter President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, move the U.S. embassy to the occupied city, close the Palestinian delegation office in Washington and cut aid to the Palestinians through the U.N. refugee agency.

Abbas's speech will come as Israel faces escalating tensions with Iran, a supporter of the Palestinian Authority.

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Expediency Council, said any attacks carried out on Iran by Israel would result in the destruction of Tel Aviv.

"The U.S. and Israeli leaders don't know Iran and don't understand the power of resistance and therefore, they continuously face defeat," Rezaei told the Hezbollah-affiliated Al Manar News in Lebanon.

"Today, the situation of the U.S. and Israel indicate their fear of the Zionist regime's collapse and the U.S. decline."

Abbas, Haley spar over Israel at Security Council meeting

Feb. 20 (UPI) -- In a speech at the United Nations Security Council Tuesday, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas confronted the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Abbas called President Donald Trump's decision earlier this year to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem a "dangerous" development.

The Palestinian leader said the Trump administration made an "unlawful decision" when they announced the move and called for a "multi-lateral international mechanism" to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"Israel is acting like a state above the law" Abbas said, adding that the U.S. ally has "shut the door on the two-state solution."

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley fired back at Abbas Tuesday during the security council meeting, telling the Palestinian authority the United States "will not chase" after negotiations with Palestinians.

"The United States knows the Palestinian leadership was very unhappy with the decision to move our embassy to Jerusalem," Haley said. "You don't have to like that decision. You don't have to praise it. You don't even have to accept it. But know this: that decision will not change."

White House spokesman Josh Raffel said White House adviser Jared Kushner, and special representative for international negotiations Jason Greenblatt were "finalizing" the U.S.'s peace plan -- a plan Abbas expressed no interest in without other international partners.

"We have expressed our absolute readiness to reach a historic peace agreement," Abbas said. "No country alone can solve a regional or international conflict without the participation of other international partners."

Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon told Abbas in a separate speech that was he was "no longer part of the solution."

"You are part of the problem," he added.

Abbas' speech came as Israel faces escalating tensions with Iran, a supporter of the Palestinian Authority.

Opening of U.S. Embassy Jerusalem

In May, the United States plans to open a new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem. The opening will coincide with Israel’s 70th anniversary. The Embassy will initially be located in the Arnona neighborhood, in a modern building that now houses consular operations of U.S. Consulate General Jerusalem. Those consular operations, including American citizen and visa services, will continue at the Arnona facility without interruption, as part of the Embassy. Consulate General Jerusalem will continue to operate as an independent mission with an unchanged mandate, from its historic Agron Road location. Initially, the interim Embassy in Arnona will contain office space for the Ambassador and a small staff. By the end of next year, we intend to open a new Embassy Jerusalem annex on the Arnona compound that will provide the Ambassador and his team with expanded interim office space. In parallel, we have started the search for a site for our permanent Embassy to Israel, the planning and construction of which will be a longer-term undertaking. We are excited about taking this historic step, and look forward with anticipation to the May opening.

Arab League slams US decision to open Jerusalem embassy in May

The Arab League on Saturday slammed the US announcement that it would relocate its embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May.
The Trump administration said on Friday it would bring forward the controversial move to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Israeli state.

But the news enraged the Palestine Liberation Organisation, who called it a "blatant provocation" — particularly given that May 14 is also the date on which Palestinians mark the displacement of seven hundred thousand of their people during Israel's creation, known as the nakba (catastrophe).

The US decision is the latest in a chain of provocative and erroneous resolutions, ongoing since December, Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul-Gheit said in a statement, warning that Washington's approach could destroy the last hope for peace and coexistence between the Palestinians and Israelis.

What is more, he added, according to the state-run Kuwaiti News Agency (Kuna), relocating the embassy on the same date as the Nakba anniversary reveals Washington's full bias for Israel and a lack of any rational reading of the nature and history of the conflict by the United States.

He said the US was no longer entitled to sponsor the Middle East peace process, echoing similar claims made by the Palestinian Authority since US President Donald Trump announced the embassy relocation in December last year.

Mr Abul-Gheit added, however, that the embassy relocation would not affect Jerusalem's status as an occupied city.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the announcement on Friday that the US embassy relocation would be brought forward, thanking Mr Trump for his "leadership" and his "friendship", Agence France-Presse reported.

The embassy move is expected to complicate efforts to restart peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians — and further jeopardise the traditional, if disputed, US role as an "honest broker" in efforts to resolve one of the world's most intractable conflicts.

"In May, the United States plans to open a new US embassy in Jerusalem. The opening will coincide with Israel's 70th anniversary," US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said on Friday.

Until now, the US embassy has been located in Tel Aviv with a separate consulate general located in Jerusalem that represents American interests in the Palestinian territories.

The new embassy will be initially located in the US consular building in Jerusalem's Arnona neighbourhood while Washington searches for a permanent location, "the planning and construction of which will be a longer-term undertaking", Ms Nauert said.

The interim embassy will contain office space for the ambassador and "a small staff", she added.
"By the end of next year, we intend to open a new embassy Jerusalem annex on the Arnona compound that will provide the ambassador and his team with expanded interim office space," she added.

Mr Trump broke with decades of policy in December when he announced US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and pledged to move the embassy. The move drew near global condemnation, enraged the Palestinians and sparked days of unrest in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem.

It ruptured generations of international consensus that Jerusalem's status should be settled as part of a two-state peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians.

The PLO immediately decried Washington's embassy announcement as a "provocation to all Arabs".

"The American administration's decisions to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and choose the Palestinian people's Nakba as the date for this step is a blatant violation of international law," said the PLO's second-in-command, Saeb Erekat.

He said the result would be "the destruction of the two-state option, as well as a blatant provocation to all Arabs and Muslims".
Israel follows the Jewish lunar calendar, so this year's official independence celebration falls on April 19.

Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its capital, while many Palestinians see the eastern part as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Mr Trump said his recognition of Jerusalem, which made good on a 2016 campaign pledge, marked the start of a "new approach" to solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Israelis and Palestinians alike have seen his move as Washington taking Israel's side in the conflict — a view reinforced by the White House's recent decision to withhold financing for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas travelled to the United Nations' headquarters in New York earlier this week to call for an international conference by mid-2018 in which the US would not have the central mediating role in launching a wider peace process.
Mr Trump's envoy for Middle East peace, Jason Greenblatt, and his son-in-law and adviser, Jared Kushner, subsequently met behind closed doors with UN Security Council ambassadors, soliciting their support for a prospective Trump peace plan.

While the Palestinians want a new international mechanism to shepherd peace talks, the details of the Trump plan and its timing are still unclear.

The revised schedule on the embassy move came after US Vice President Mike Pence pledged only last month to move the embassy by the end of 2019 in a speech to Israel's parliament that saw Palestinian lawmakers expelled after they shouted in protest.

"The hardest deal to make of any kind is between the Israelis and Palestinians," Mr Trump told reporters at the White House on Friday.

"We're actually making great headway. Jerusalem was the right thing to do."

Not everyone likes your leadership, same way not everyone likes Hamas or Palestinian leadership. You need to be more careful hearing rumors from media sources(especially pro-iranian sources) that want to make it appear like all Arabs hate Saudi Arabia which is not true. I've been to Saudi Arabia and I loved it the most out of all Arab nations and I met lots of amazing people in Mecca, Jeddah and Medina. If I had to live anywhere in the Arab world it is in Saudi Arabia. I recognize Saudi's are ancestral home of Arabs and Islam, and I'm an well informed person aware of this stuff going on media which is aiming to make rift between Arabs.

Unfortunately, many Arabs I know here including Palestinians are falling for these unreliable and non-credible sources being passed around MBS visiting Israel or even stuff farther than that. It's clearly not true but some people can't differentiate or able to see the bigger picture or are God fearing enough to make sure there is no more hatred towards each other.
