Washington (CNN)Whatever New Hampshire saw in Donald Trump, it looks like Iowa is seeing it too.

After taking second place in the latest New Hampshire polls, Trump is also claiming the silver in Iowa -- where he traveled hot off his announcement -- claiming 10% of support among likely caucus-goers, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker continues to lead the Republican field in the Hawkeye state with 18%, while Ben Carson tied with Trump for second. Walker has yet to announce he is running for president, but is expected to launch his campaign this month.

While Walker sits eight points ahead of the field, the rest of the fray of Republican White House hopefuls is tightly packed within the poll's margin of error. Just one point behind Carson and Trump lie Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Ted Cruz of Texas. Floridians Jeb Bush, the state's former governor, and Marco Rubio, a senator, trail closely with 8% and 7%, respectively.

Conspicuously missing from the top ranks are the Iowa caucus's last two victors, evangelical favorites Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. Huckabee notches 5% to Santorum's 4%.

One thing is sure though: Trump is surging off of his announcement two weeks ago.

Now at 10% in the Quinnipiac poll, a Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics poll that came two weeks before his announcement -- and gave Walker the lead with a similar 17% — had Trump checking with just 4% of support.

And he is now registering as second nationwide -- behind Bush -- in a CNN/ORC poll released Wednesday.

But like in other polls, voters who don't support Trump are making it clear that they're not going to change their minds according to Wednesday's Quinnipiac survey.

Nearly 3 in 10 voters said they would definitely not support Trump. Bush and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who are viewed as moderates by Republican base voters, come close to that with 24% and 18%, respectively, saying they would never support those candidates.

Trump and Christie are the only two candidates with their approval numbers underwater in Iowa: 47% have an unfavorable view of Trump (with 42% saying they have a positive view) and 59% see Christie in a negative light, with just 25% looking at Christie favorably.

The Christie campaign, which launched Tuesday, has been clear though that Iowa won't be a stomping ground for the brash New Jersey governor. Christie is instead setting his sights on New Hampshire as the early primary state he hopes to claim.

But even in New Hampshire, Christie will first have to surpass Trump to climb to the top

The Republicans will never select Trump because his gross popularity rating with the general public is too low for him to win the Presidency. They know that ultimately pleasing the greatest number of Republicans is no good if the candidate cannot seize enough middle ground to win over swing voters and undecided non-part types. he can be the best Republican candidate in the world that every party member adores but it count's for nothing if he is not electable in a general ballot.

What you just said made me very happy. Thank you!

I am so disgusted with almost everyone running this time around. I spent months trying to decide who I was voting for, if I voted at all. As little faith as I had starting out this time around, the only hope of me having any faith by the end of it is if trump gets his head stomped on. Are you wondering if I meant that "head stomping" bit literally or figuratively?

It was figurative. I would never condone violence, no matter who it is or how bad I believe they need and deserve it.

I wouldn't worry too much about Trump. There's absolutely no way he is getting nominated by the GOP. The polls may indicate that there are some republicans who like him but most people don't like him and that will be the deciding factor when it comes to choosing who'll be Clinton's opponent. There are too many GOP candidates though. This might work against the party because if someone Republican voters like isn't nominated they could choose to vote for a democrat.

Even in other forums, I have read this kind of comment against Donald Trump. Now I am getting an impression that Mr. Trump is an unpopular candidate to be. I seldom see the name of Jeb Bush which was, at first, touted to be eventually selected as the torch bearer of the Republican. What's your take on Jeb, can he win over Hillary in case they would be in the square arena?

Trump, I think has some ideals that would help the country overall. However, with all the different candidates in the Republican field, it is going to be nearly impossible for a clear front runner to come out of the campaign until later on in the race.

You may be hearing this in other forums because it is pretty clearly true. Trump has always been very unpopular with mainstream Americans, and since he came out and made nasty comments about Mexican immigrants it got a whole lot worse. His TV show was cancelled, Ms Universe lost its TV coverage, and all his major sponsored dropped him or repudiated his beliefs. He backed up his claim that Mexican immigrant are responsible for rapes in this country with the comment "well some one is raping them". Which is both bigoted and wildly insensitive.

No candidate, not even a far right one, has a hope in hell if they lose the Hispanic vote--in a country that contains more Spanish speakers than Spain does.

I had heard about his his statement, but I had no idea there was this kind of blowback! That restores a little bit of my faith.

The fact that Trump can even poll up to second is such a great indicator of how poor the Republic candidates are. There isn't anyone there who seems like they can go toe to toe with even a publicly corrupt candidate such as Clinton.

The Republican party really needs to do some soul searching and modernization if they want to take on the hip and media savvy campaigns being run by the Dems.

Your post made me happy! The only improvement I would hope for is that it isn't Clinton they are going up against. I like Bernie.

Why does Trump even think he has a chance, just because he's rich? He's also full of himself and does not come across as compassionate or understanding. Those are two very important qualities for any leader in my opinion.

I think Trump ahs a VERY good chance to win. After eight years of Obama, and the onslaught of leftist /socialist crap that's been hawked since he's been in, I think he'll get a LOT of the "new disenfranchised" vote. All the people who have been lied to, all of the people who didn't want him in the first place, and all of the people who want real "change". I'm telling you, there's a BIG shift coming, and Trump's at the forefront of it.
