Turkey's Erdogan moves to sue French Le Point magazine
  • ByThe Associated Press
ANKARA, Turkey — Oct 25, 2019

Turkey's state-run news agency says lawyers for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have filed a criminal complaint against French magazine Le Point journalists for allegedly insulting him.

Anadolu Agency said Friday the criminal complaint was filed against editor-in-chief Etienne Gernelle and journalist Romain Gubert at a Turkish court.
In its cover page headline, Le Point called Erdogan "The Eradicator" in relation to Turkey's military offensive against Syrian Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria. The front page also read: "ethnic cleansing, Erdogan's method."

Insulting the president is a crime in Turkey. Erdogan has filed thousands of complaints against journalists, politicians, students and others for comments deemed to be insults.

In 2016, Erdogan sued a German comedian over a satirical poem, leading to diplomatic tensions with Germany and debate on freedom of speech.

They can criticize Erdogan all they want, but to say the operation was ethnic cleansing is very misleading and bad rhetoric. The Kurds were the ones moved into Syrian Arab cities and took over control with their newly formed militia, formed after the civil war. They are mostly Syrian Arab populated cities and all that happened was Kurdish security control over those areas in the north has ceded.

This is not ethnic cleaning. The French Magazine is accusing Turkey of ethnically cleansing Kurds out of northern Syria. The reality is, they do not make a big portion of the population there. And only had security control over it via their militants. Erdogan is widely criticized in Europe and this criticism is more directed at Turkey as a whole.

Not an opinion, it is facts, the northern Syria cities are largely populated by Syrian Arabs and not Syrian Kurds. This has always been the case. The OP was intended to push back the SDF militia and not any Syrian Kurd civilians out of there.
