Considering the fact that the UK recently reduced army personnel by 20,000 I think that increasing defense spending NOW will not give the UK the capacity to "deal with whatever the world will throw at them." It's a shame that they'll have to rely on their allies, NATO and the U.S for protection because with a small army of 50,000 soldiers they'd make little impact anywhere in case there's a war.

It follows after threat from Russia annexing Crimea. They fear that the unrest might spread. That is why they want to be ready.

Well it's good to see they are not butchering the armed forces anymore than they already have. I'm still a bit bitter at the Conservative government for scrapping the Harrier and the carriers we had. Bring back the Harrier I say and develop it more.

The only reason the defense budget does not appear to have been cut is because of the massive amount that has been recently been pumped into the defence of the Falkland Islands. That's what Osbourne isn't telling us. Other areas are suffering as a result (like the personnel cuts @Redheart mentioned).

Unlike many countries, the UK is not cutting on defense expenses and the explanation to this according to Chancellor George Osborne is that in this way the UK can 'deal with whatever the world throws at us'. Interesting line of thinking!

George Osborne: Defence spending rise means UK can 'deal with whatever the world throws at us
That should be the way of thinking for us in the US as well. But over the last eight years, the teeth have been literally pulled out of the military.

When governments have to cut expenses they usually cut on the military because there are billions there. Sure, the safety is not the same, but people need to have jobs, schools and hospitals as well.

By military expenditure by % of GDP(5th column), you have the highest rate among NATO members.

The US may well have the highest rate of military spending but is it being spent in the correct manner? The chart above also doesn't indicate whether this spend is a drop compared to previous years.

Nope, it isn't being spent in the correct manner. For some reason the government likes to go a little overboard in some areas, and ignore other important areas. There isn't one particular administration to blame for this. Its all of them. We are too concerned with what's going on elsewhere and leave here, at home, the people they are supposed to work for,

Well, Lets hopes so, but I personally think their money would be better spend having up to date security equipment everywhere and not just in locations they see fit. Minimize the domestic threat where ever possible.
