80K6T 3D RADAR by ISKRA IS GETTING READY FOR THE TESTS
29.11.2017

UOP SE "Scientific production complex" Iskra " is preparing a new 3D observation radar 80K6T – based on solid-state modules – for the factory trials.
This radar is designed for target destination to the means of air defense and can work with all types of AA missile systems the Armed Forces of Ukraine are armed with. In addition, the powerful radar capabilities allow using it as an information link within the Air Forces units of Ukraine.

The main feature of 80K6T is an active phased array. It allows detecting and tracking targets with super-high accuracy. At the same time, a single station allows simultaneous measurement of target range, azimuth and altitude.

80K6T allows to detect air objects at a distance of up to 500 km, at altitudes of up to 40 km. At the same time, the radar can track up to 500 targets simultaneously. Besides, the radar station can work under a significant counteraction of opponent’s electronic warfare. Due to this 80K6T operators can observe aerial dimension without obstacles, which is one of the main conditions for the air defense effectiveness.

In one minute, the radar makes up to 12 turns, providing target data update every 5 seconds, and a large viewing area along the corner of the site, up to 70 degrees, allows detecting battlefield support artillery rockets. In addition, a special signal processing system makes it possible to detect small-sized and cruise missiles at low altitudes with terrain following.

In the process of 80K6T development, SPC "Iskra" specialists paid special attention to the mobility of the complex, which consists of two small transport units: one for operators of the radar station and autonomous power generators, and in the second one – for radar equipment. This solution allows 80K6T transportation using light aircraft.

Ukraine’s Iskra to begin testing 80K6T air surveillance radar
by Bilal Khan
Dec 11, 2017

UkrOboronProm announced that its Iskra Scientific Production Complex will begin testing the land-based active-phased array air surveillance and air defence radar 80K6T.

UkrOboronProm states that the Iskra 80K6T is designed to detect targets and operate in-concert with the surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The 80K6T will also be able to operate as part of a network-enabled force within Ukraine.

The 80K6T is an S-band 3D radar, it can provide information of the target’s range, azimuth and altitude. With a maximum detection range of 500 km and maximum altitude coverage of 40 km, the 80K6T can track up to 500 targets simultaneously.

The 80K6T can pick-up fighter-sized targets – i.e. 3m2 RCS (radar cross-section) – at 350 km and at altitudes of 10 to 30 km. Iskra says that the 806KT has scanning intervals of 5, 10 and 20 seconds.

Each of the 80K6T’s solid-state transceivers has a peak power of 30 kW. It can emit up to 16 beams can detect small targets, including terrain-hugging cruise missiles. Iskra states that the 80K6T provides radar clutter suppression and has strong defensibility against enemy electronic warfare (EW) jamming.

Logistically, the 80K6T comprises of two transportable pieces – the radar equipment and the radar station for operators and the power generators. It can be ferried using light transport aircraft. As per Iskra, the radar can be deployed in 15 to 20 minutes.

Notes & Comments:

The 80K6T is an example of Ukraine’s efforts to concurrently revitalize its defence industry and re-equip its national armed forces. In August, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko stated that Kiev’s objective is to develop and produce “new missile weapons, cruise missile systems, modern artillery systems, precision munitions, unmanned aerial vehicles, electronic warfare complexes, counter battery radars [and] space reconnaissance [systems].” Besides investing in new programs (or reviving shelved ones), Ukraine is also partnering with overseas partners – including Turkish and U.S. companies – to develop new solutions.

The 80K6T aims to provide an analogous capability to the Saab Giraffe 4A, Hensoldt TRML-3D/32 and -4D and Thales Ground Master, among others. However, while the 80K6T has promising specifications, actual performance and reliability has yet to be tested. If available on the export market, the 80K6T can provide a capable non-Western solution, especially for Ukraine’s traditional client base.

It is not known if Ukraine will extend Iskra’s development work to include other radar solutions, such as naval surveillance and fire-control radars, weapon-locating radars or airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) radars. However, Poroshenko’s statements from August outline the objective of fulfilling Ukraine’s core requirements with domestically developed and produced solutions.

3D radar 80K6T from Iskra – UKROBORONPROM at "Arms and Security 2017"
13.10.2017

The 3D observation radar 80K6T is an advanced development of UKROBORONPROM SE “Scientific And Production Complex “Iskra” – a target designator for air defense means. For the first time this development is demonstrated at the exhibition" Arms and Security 2017″.

Due to this radar, the defenders of Ukraine will be able to see all air objects at a distance of up to 500 km, at all altitudes, from 0 to more than 40 km. The 3D observation radar 80K6T can track up to 500 targets at a time.

At the same time, the radar of “Iskra” production – with its A/S up to 70 degrees – allows detecting tactical and operational tactical missiles.

And a special system of signal processin allows to detect small-sized and cruise missiles at low altitudes with terrain following.

This radar can work with all the anti-aircraft missile complexes the Armed Forces of Ukraine are armed with; it will greatly enhance the airborne component.

Digital phase active grid is the main peculiarity of 80K6T. This technology allows detecting and tracking targets with super-high accuracy. At the same time, only one station can simultaneously measure the target’s position using three coordinates at once: range, azimuth and height, ie, a 3D model is created. Previously, two radars were used for this purpose.

In addition, the use of the transmitter on transistor power amplifiers, in turn, increases radar reliability. Even in case several of the tightening modules fail, the radar will not shut down.

Radar 80K6T is developed taking into account the maximum mobility; it is adapted for aircraft transportation by aircraft of UOP SE “Antonov”. It takes only 10-15 minutes to deploy the three-dimensional radar.
