The US government has approved the sale of 46,000 rounds of 120 mm ammunition for Iraq's M1A1 Abrams tanks, the Defense Security Co-operation Agency (DSCA) announced on 20 October.
The DSCA suggested the ammunition would be used in ongoing operations against Sunni militants, saying it "will enable the Iraqi government to sustain its efforts to establish and maintain security".
However, much of the ammunition in the proposed sale outlined by the DSCA would be of little use in the counter-insurgency operations the Iraqi Army's M1A1s are currently involved in.
It includes 20,000 M865 Kinetic Energy Warhead (KEW) rounds: an armour-piercing, fin-stabilised discarding sabot tracer (APFSDS-T) round designed to penetrate other tanks.
