The United States has blocked attempts by its Middle East allies to fly heavy weapons directly to the Kurds fighting Islamic State jihadists in Iraq, The Telegraph has learnt.

Some of America’s closest allies say President Barack Obama and other Western leaders, including David Cameron, are failing to show strategic leadership over the world’s gravest security crisis for decades.

They now say they are willing to “go it alone” in supplying heavy weapons to the Kurds, even if means defying the Iraqi authorities and their American backers, who demand all weapons be channelled through Baghdad.

High level officials from Gulf and other states have told this newspaper that all attempts to persuade Mr Obama of the need to arm the Kurds directly as part of more vigorous plans to take on Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) have failed. The Senate voted down one attempt by supporters of the Kurdish cause last month.

Maybe it is because the US has a long history of dropping weapons into this situation and having the weapons or the actually forces end up on the opposition side in the next conflict.

IMHO the peshmerga seem to be the only force who really has their shit together in that area but having them dominate the opposing forces opens the door to later separatist action that might create further instability.

I personally think it is vital that the kurds are armed so they have a decent change against ISIL armed with weaponry they captured from the government forces. However I feel that this report (which is one sided and has the Telegraph as the only sources, naming unspecified primary sources) may not be giving the full picture.

All news sources lean a little more to the left or to the right. I doubt, in all of news history, anyone has ever given a full picture. I'm not trying to defend this one. I guess I'm trying to say we have to do the best we can with what we've got.

I am not grumping about bias, but about the fact this whole story is based on one Telegraph journo talking to one source who obviously has an agenda to get the Kurd armed super-asap. So what is really exactly going on once you remove the rhetoric remains a tad unclear to me. Deliberate blocking for (reason?), slow bureacracy?, something else? If there was even one story on the same topic that was not just a retread of the somewhat high on rhetoric/low on facts Telegraph story it might be a little easier to know exactly what the issue here is.

I tend to think it has *something* to do with this: Kurds intent on carving new state out of Iraq after ISIS fight ‘whether the US likes it or not’ | Fox News
