Billions have been spent waging war on terrorists so I think $450 million is a "small price" to pay for peace. And the good thing is they money will be used for [among other things] mine clearance. But the peace deal might complicate things . . .

Will Peace With the FARC Destabilize Colombia? - US News
. . . fears persist that disarming the guerilla force could plunge territories under rebel control since as far back as 1964 into a morass of crime and violence that has undone other Latin American states facing a similar challenge.

And there's also the fact that the guerrillas are drug traffickers. Will they stop selling drugs after the fighting ends?

The state of South America in general is very sad. It's frustrating to see Columbia in yet another plight. Like the director of Sicario nails: the controllers will always change, but the times will never change.

The cause may be noble, but the United States doesn't have money to throw around like this. We are trillions of dollars in debt, and need to curtail spending until we are able to rebuild the economy and pay off a good portion of what we owe.

Perhaps if they would simply institute land reform, the whole mess would clean itself up without money. Of course, there are other ideas that could be implemented. For one thing, more people need access to the internet to improve social mobility (The net has a lot of high quality educational videos on math etc..) Other positive things would be real investment in public schools, and an end to these oppressive free trade agreements.

it is going to be in the envelope on which they will write We Are Hypocrites. As someone said above this is the price way to low not only for the money invested in war but also to all those who died in vain and every single one of them died in vain. It is unbelievable how world do not unite against the U.S. and just make a great big wall like Trump is suggesting an leave them to be in their world with no touching points with the rest of the world or any decision making whatsoever. it would be like Lennon suggested in Imagine.

Obviously Latin America is in turmoil. In this case, is it any wonder so many Latin Americans are illegally going to the USA? Of course, the right wing cannot understand this concept, and continues to bash illegal immigrants with the most viscous hate.

In addition, we have to say, "If things are so great in Latin America, then why are people formenting revolutions which cost millions and cost millions of lives?".

This is a long overdue strategy instead of the mass weapons transfers that the US has been committing to Colombia for decades now. The fact remains that peace comes at a fraction of the cost of war if numbers can speak for themselves. However, the peace process should not be seen to sacrifice the noble focus on elimination of the deleterious narco trade being conducted by opposing armed groups.

Some thinkers like Noam Chomsky have suggested that disorder due to war has prompted immigration from Central America, the largest source of illegal immigrants to the US. Of course, the disorder in Central America, according to Chomsky, was caused by wars started by Reagan.

However, I would take a more middle ground position in regards to history, looking more carefully at the facts.

Now in regards to Colombia, we see another Central America in the making and another starting point for more illegal immigrants to the US.
