Seems like another Vietnam war type scenario starting up again, which was replayed in Afghanistan, Iraq and now with ISIS. Economic suicide for USA. The cost of the Vietnam war started the debt problem with USA, and forced them to get rid of the gold standard. The various other conflicts that USA is involved in has caused their debt to double in the last 10 years.

Cost of arming groups like ISIS is cheap, cost of fighting them is expensive.

Washington is considering whether to send arms to help the Ukraine government against pro-Russian rebels. The re-think follows recent gains by the separatists who have re-ignited the war in the east.

But the administration is split and there is a risk of the conflict turning into a proxy war between the US and Russia.

I never thought the USA would consider this as they have other wars like the ISIS to deal with, would be surprising if they do and what are the motives for doing would be surprising. I reckon the USA will send the men as in the news it is thinking of doing so to put a stop to the increasing violence since last year. This will be a mixed reaction as, some will think it is a political game and some will agree with it happening will be interesting to see what happens.

Should the U.S make the mistake of sending the Ukrainian government arms, then Russia would also send more arms to the rebels [they've been doing it secretly all along but this time round, they won't bother trying to hide it]. And considering the fact that the rebels have been claiming that they intend to recruit 100,000 fighters, it appears like they expect to get reinforcements from Russia but they'll cover it up with, what they claim is a recruitment exercise.

All this therefore, will end badly for Ukraine because the U.S won't be sending any soldiers while the rebels can get Russian aid any time.

Perhaps they can send dozens of drones to Ukraine for a start. Or, they could use their knowledge of the terrain to supply the Ukrainian military with a set of viable strategies. If the United States is trying to avoid direct participation, they can serve as their eyes and ears.

I agree with sending drones instead of having military lives endangered at this point and time.

Russia is just next door, USA is a long ways away. Russia can send aide in easier, and the advantage Russia has is they will know this aide is getting into the right hands. With giving aide to the Ukranians, the Americans have the disadvantage of lack of military intelligence. The USA aide could possibly be getting into the wrong hands. ISIS anyone ?

I think, unlike the arms they did in Syria, this time round the weapons can be delivered straight to the Ukrainian government. However since Ukraine's economy is on the brink of collapse, when that happens and chaos ensues the odds are these weapons may end up being used against civilians who'll be demanding for Poroshenko's resignation.

Already some people have started calling for his resignation.

"A People's veche of volunteer soldiers took place today on Independence Square in Kiev. The participants in the rally called on Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko to resign. Currently there are more than 500 soldiers on the square. The protesters accuse Kiev of not providing weapons to the army and of not financing it."

Well the US has been delivering arms to Ukraine for quite some time. There are a lot of videos where the rebels show NATO arms and ammunition that they've captured from the Ukrainian Army. A letter from the Minister of Defense of Ukraine was leaked today and, basically, it shows how corrupt the Ukrainian government is and how little it actually cares for its people. It seems that they have been selling weapons that the US sent them to Syria:

And now they still want to send them more weapons which will also be sold off to be used by terrorists in Syria?

The Ukrainian government has betrayed it's people and since they obviously won't win this war against the Russian-backed separatists, they should call for a truce, surrender the territory seized to the rebels and accept the rebels demands for more autonomy. This would end the bloodshed.
