Most of the weight of traditional weapons is the bullet or projective itself. Bullets kill because they transfer energy into the target. Lasers are pure energy, so there is no need for bullets, and the transfer of energy is more efficient. In aircraft weight is important, a laser equipped aircraft could theoretically have continous fire.

The top brass in the U.S. Air Force wants to put laser weapons on ground-attack aircraft.

Speaking at a conference in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, Lt. Gen. Bradley Heithold, the head of the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command, said he wanted to explore the possibility of outfitting an AC-130 Ghostrider aircraft with laser weapons.

What he didn’t say was whether the airborne laser would be powered by chemical or electric energy?

This is frightening and sure that a whole new level of war and fighting is coming with new technologies and upgraded strategies. If US is doing this, then other country is sure to follow like China, and this is what's even more frightening. We know that China is really capable of great technological feats.

Lets hope it is electrical and not chemical because we are the ones that are going to destroy earth one day, not an asteroid but humans are going to cause the world to end with nuclear and chemical warfare. It is a shock to the system to know that each country, well almost all of them have these things in place and that there are more options coming; laser sounds like a good way to chase after ISIS

Its important to know under the Geneva Convention that militaries are not allowed to use laser weapons directly against the people. And since the U.S. Navy has announced its high-tech laser weapon is fully operational, Rear. Adm. Matthew Klunder the Navy will abide by it.
