Dozens killed in renewed heavy fighting between Armenia, Azerbaijan in Nagorno Karabakh

Heavy fighting has broken out between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces along the front lines of the separatist Nagorno-Karabakh region, reportedly killing at least one child in what one official called the worst clashes since 1994, with Russia urging an immediate ceasefire to end the latest surge of violence over the disputed region.

Officials from each former Soviet republic blamed the other Saturday for the fighting that began overnight. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan said they had inflicted heavy losses on the other.

"Twelve Azeri servicemen were killed in action and a Mi-24 helicopter was shot down by Armenian forces," Azerbaijan's defense ministry said in a statement, also claiming that Azeri forces took control of "two strategic heights and a village" in Karabakh. One Azeri tank also went out of service due to land mine explosion. The statement added that six Armenian tanks, 15 artillery positions and supporting engineer positions were destroyed, and thus it is estimated that more than 100 Armenian soldiers were either killed our wounded in action

Armenia's defense ministry said that "Azerbaijan on Friday night launched a massive attack along the Karabakh frontline using tanks, artillery, and helicopters." Armenian-backed separatist forces meanwhile claimed to have shot down two Azeri helicopters. "As a result of the Karabakh army's counterstrike, Azeri forces were repelled and sustained serious losses in manpower," a defense ministry statement said. "Heavy fighting is underway."

Azerbaijan denied an earlier claim that one of its helicopters was brought down. It insisted its forces were counter-attacking after coming under fire from "large-caliber artillery and grenade-launchers" by the Armenian side. "Azerbaijani armed forces have immediately undertaken retaliatory measures against Armenian forces," Azerbaijan's defense ministry said in a statement, adding that "fighting continues in the directions of Agdere-Terter-Agdam and Khojavend-Fizuli."

David Babayan, a spokesman for Nagorno-Karabakh's separatist president, said a boy of about 12 was killed and two other children wounded in a Grad missile barrage by Azerbaijani forces. He characterized the fighting as the worst since 1994, when a war over the territory ended.

The sides are separated by a demilitarized buffer zone, but both claim frequent violations by the other.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, urged all sides to cease firing and "show restraint," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies. Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu also held emergency phone talks with Azerbaijani and Armenian counterparts Zakir Hasanov and Seyran Ohanyan to urge de-escalation in Karabakh.

Nagorno-Karabakh, a region in Azerbaijan, has been under the control of local ethnic Armenian forces and the Armenian military since 1994. Years of negotiations under the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) have brought little progress in resolving the territorial dispute.

Clashes erupted between two former Soviet republics over the control of the disputed region lying inside Azerbaijan's borders as early as 1988. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Armenian forces, aided by the weapons vacuum, former Soviet forces fighting as mercenaries on their side and support from locals, captured the former autonomous oblast along with large surrounding areas in its east and south. When the fighting reached to a stalemate in 1994, around one-fifths of Azerbaijan's territory was inavded by Armenian and Karabakh troops and remained under their control ever since. Azerbaijani troops are roughly in control in 20 percent of the territories of the separatist region, which makes up less than half of the occupied territories.

Armenian forces are being accused of committing grave human rights violations against local Azerbaijani population in invaded territories, with the Khojaly Massacre being the most notable.

More than 700,000 Azerbaijanis and 300,000 Armenians were displaced due to the conflict. Many displaced Azerbaijanis continue to live in poverty as the Azeri government refuses to accept the status-quo.

Both sides report numerous casualties, accusing each other on Saturday of violating a ceasefire, a sign that the two-decade-old conflict which has left some 30,000 people dead is far from a peaceful resolution.

Dont forget the Russia factor.
Azerbaijan isnt that big either but you have to consider the fact that the Azeri's didnt have much of an armed forces in those days.
Armenia had a Russian base on its soil with heavy equipment,Armenia had help from the Russians.
Things have changed since the 90s,Azerbaijan's Armed Forces is in a far better shape then Armenia's Armed Forces, better equipment, better structure, better training, NATO standard.

I read in Twitter Russia moved some of its fighter jets closer to the disputed area.

I think Azerbaijan won't stop till it get back all areas belong to it.

Well I'm not sure it does belong to them, I'd have to do some research. But, Armenian Defense Ministry confirm 18 KIA. Azerbaijan confirm 12. Now Armenia is moving artillery pieces(Also tactical ballistic missile at end) to area it appears:

Turkey condemns attacks by Armenia on Azerbaijan's Karabakh

Turkey's Foreign Ministry has condemned Armenian attacks which have led to two days of fighting over the occupied Karabakh region.

"We condemn artillery fire and attacks which were started by Armenia against Azerbaijan on the night of April 1 along the contact line and [which] affected civil society," the ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

"We call upon Armenia to stick to the ceasefire and end to the clashes as soon as possible," the ministry added.

The ministry said there was a risk of similar clashes unless the Armenian occupation ends.

Azerbaijani state news agency Azertac quoted President Ilham Aliyev as saying: "Armenia carried out another provocation on the line of contact and attacked the positions of Azerbaijan.

"Azerbaijan's armed forces repulsed the attack and the opposite side received an appropriate response."

However, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan claimed in a National Security Assembly gathering that 18 Armenian soldiers had died and 35 had been injured. Azerbaijan had said that six Armenian tanks and 15 cannons were destroyed and more than 100 Armenian soldiers killed or injured.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Chairman-in-Office and Germany's Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed concern over the clashes in Karabakh.

In a statement, Steinmeier called upon both sides to "end hostilities immediately and to respect the ceasefire in full".

Azerbaijan reclaimed land occupied by Armenia during the clashes over Friday and Saturday which saw 12 Azerbaijani soldiers martyred.

Azerbaijan's defense ministry said that its army had launched operations in the Agdere, Terter, Agdam, Hocavend and Fuzuli regions to protect civilian lives.

During the operation the Azerbaijani army reclaimed some strategic hills and residential zones.

Pro-Armenian militia occupied the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan in 1993.

Three UN Security Council Resolutions (853, 874 and 884), and United Nations General Assembly Resolutions 19/13 and 57/298 refer to Karabakh as being part of Azerbaijan. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe refers to the region as being occupied by Armenian forces.

Armenia, Azerbaijan report hostilities ongoing in Nagorny-Karabakh after Baku’s unilateral ceasefire

Armenia and Azerbaijan report hostilities are continuing in the Nagorny-Karabakh despite Baku’s announcement of a unilateral ceasefire. People are reportedly being evacuated from the conflict zone.

The fighting is ongoing on the frontline in Nagorny-Karabakh, Armenia’s Defence Ministry said, as cited by TASS.

Martakert region head, Vladik Khachataryan, said shelling is continuously ongoing from the eastern side. Several shells apparently fired by Azeri forces hit Martakert town center. In the last 24 hours, the town has reportedly been hit by 25 shells.

According to social media reports, residents are leaving the city, which is some three kilometers from the frontline.

Sputnik Armenia news outlet journalists came under fire when entering the city of Martakert, the media says. The journalists weren’t injured.
