What do you think about protectionism?

What do you think about protectionism nowdays? Could it be applied in a modern country? I have some doubt about it.. I mean with the globalization, internet marketing and stuff could a country be fully "isolated" econimcally from the rest of the world? Is North Korea right now can be called a "protectionist" country?

From what I understand of protectionism, it is protecting an industry or an economy. Like your example of North Korea, it seems like that country is protecting not only its economy but also its culture. It's not really healthy to be isolated because the population suffers. This globalization has given us the freedom of communicating with anyone who has an internet connection and a protectionist country is only punishing its people.
