Correction Taiwan was a member of the UN but the UN expelled them and replaced their seat with the Republic of China.
Basically Taiwan was occupied by Chiang Kai-shek and he held the UN seat. When they expelled him from the seat, they expelled Taiwan. Taiwan has been fighting that expulsion to gain a seat at the UN as an independent nation ever since. The Petition I am drawing from here was written in 2001.
So you see, the UN recognizes that they expelled Taiwan and Taiwan recognized they were expelled... so how can you say no nation was ever expelled and Taiwan was not expelled. These documents were straight from their own records.
History.com said:In a dramatic reversal of its long-standing commitment to the Nationalist Chinese government of Taiwan, and a policy of non-recognition of the communist People's Republic of China (PRC), America's U.N. representatives vote to seat the PRC as a permanent member. Over American objections, Taiwan was expelled.
Petition Letter For United Nations Campaign said:It needs to be emphasized strongly that this new Taiwan is totally different from the old so-called "Republic of China" which was kicked out of the United Nations in 1971.
United Nations said:Resolution on Restoring the Rights of the PRC, 25 October, 1971
The General Assembly,
Recalling the Principles of the Charter of the United Nations,
Considering that the restoration of the lawful rights of the People's Republic of China is essential both for the protection of the Charter of the United Nations and for the cause that the United Nations must serve under the Charter,
Recognizing that the representatives of the Government of the People's Republic of China are the only lawful representatives of China to the United Nations and that the People's Republic of China is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council,
Decides to restore all its rights to the People's Republic of China and to recognize the representatives of its government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations, and to expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the place which they unlawfully occupy at the United Nations and in all the organizations related to it.
