U.S. boosts intelligence with Saudi in Yemen fight

The United States is expanding its intelligence-sharing with Saudi Arabia to provide more information about potential targets in the kingdom’s air campaign against Houthi militias in Yemen, U.S. officials told Reuters news agency on Saturday.

The U.S. officials said the expanded assistance includes sensitive intelligence data that will allow the Saudis to better review the kingdom’s targets.

“We have opened up the aperture a bit wider with what we are sharing with our Saudi partners,” said one U.S. official.

“We are helping them get a better sense of the battlefield and the state of play with the Houthi forces. We are also helping identify ‘no strike’ areas they should avoid” to minimize any civilian casualties, the official said.

U.S. ally Saudi Arabia is concerned that the violence could spill over the border it shares with Yemen, and is also worried about the influence of Shiite Iran, which has denied Saudi allegations it has provided direct military support to the Houthis.

Washington has come under pressure to do more to assist the alliance led by Saudi Arabia, which fears the Houthi advance is expanding the influence of arch foe Iran to its border.

The U.S. role has now expanded in size and scope, involving more detailed “vetting” of targeting information prepared by the Saudis, with a particular interest in helping the Saudis to avoid civilian casualties, according to the U.S. officials.

The White House and Pentagon would not comment specifically when asked about expanded intelligence-sharing.

“The United States is providing our partners with necessary and timely intelligence to defend Saudi Arabia and respond to other efforts to support the legitimate government of Yemen,” said Alistair Baskey, a White House spokesman.

Until recent days, U.S. intelligence support was limited to examining Saudi targeting information to try to affirm its accuracy, U.S. and Saudi officials said.

On Monday, deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke in general terms about the expanded cooperation during a visit to Riyadh, without disclosing specifics.

“Saudi Arabia is sending a strong message to the Houthis and their allies that they cannot overrun Yemen by force,” Blinken said.

“As part of that effort, we have expedited weapons deliveries, we have increased our intelligence sharing, and we have established a joint coordination planning cell in the Saudi operation center,” he added.

Earlier this week, a senior U.S. diplomat said that Washington was speeding up arms supplies and bolstering intelligence sharing with the Saudi-led alliance. The Pentagon has said it is beginning aerial refueling of Arab coalition jets - although outside Yemeni airspace.

UAE official slams 'contradictory' Pakistan vote

The United Arab Emirates on Friday slammed a Pakistani decision to stay out of the conflict in Yemen, rejecting Saudi requests to join “Operation Decisive Storm” against Houthi militia.

Anwar Gargash, the UAE’s minister of state for foreign affairs, lashed out at Pakistan’s vote on his Twitter account accusing it of choosing Iran over the Gulf nations at a time when they face an "existential confrontation" in the Yemen conflict.

Tehran seems to be more important to Islamabad and Ankara than the Gulf countries, said Gargash in one of his tweets.

“Though our economic and investment assets are inevitable, political support is missing at critical moments,” he wrote in reference to the Gulf’s economic and investment help to the South Asian nation.

The Pakistani parliament’s resolution, which promoted neutrality on the Yemeni conflict, and voiced support for Saudi Arabia is “contradictory and dangerous and unexpected from Islamabad,” said Gargash.

Earlier on Friday, the Pakistani parliament adopted a unanimous resolution on Yemen urging the government to remain neutral, offering instead to mediate a solution.

The resolution however backed the government’s commitment to protecting Saudi Arabia’s territory.

“The Arabian Gulf is in a dangerous confrontation, its strategic security is on the edge, and the moment of truth distinguishes between the real ally and the ally of media and statements,” said the minister.

“The vague and contradictory stands of Pakistan and Turkey are an absolute proof that Arab security — from Libya to Yemen — is the responsibility of none but Arab countries, and the crisis is a real test for neighboring countries.”

Turkey also expressed its support to “Operation Decisive Storm” and said it would offer logistics support and intelligence support.

“This is nothing but another chapter of laggard impartial stand,” Gargash added.

The minister then demanded Pakistan to show a clear stand “in favor of its strategic relations with the Gulf nations, ad contradictory and ambiguous views on this decisive matter will have a cost highly.”

Meanwhile, the military spokesperson for “Operation Decisive Storm,” Brigadier General Ahmed Asiri, pointed out on Friday that the Pakistani government had not yet announced its official position.

Speaking to reporters, Asiri said that while Pakistan’s participation would be an addition to the coalition, its absence in the operation wouldn’t affect the coalition’s work.

The collation doesn't need Pakistan in this war at all. Pakistan parliament vote No today but it doesn't mean the decision is going to be officially adopted giving that fact the PM has more power to act outside the parliament and not be bound to it. The question here what if Pakistan asks for support against India in the future should a war erupt God forbids?

We are going without Pakistan. You should check what the spokesman said in response to Pakistan parliament decision. Pakistan is an additional to the collation and the operation is not going to be affected by Pakistan withdrawal.
