Yemeni forces seize capital city of Al Jawf

Yemeni forces seized on Friday the capital city of the Al Jawf governorate after Houthi militants fled the town, sources told Al Arabiya News Channel.

Yemeni troops supported by popular resistance fighters advanced into the town of Al Hazm in retaliation to what the sources described as “breaches by the Houthis” in the past few hours, Al Arabiya reported.

Separately, two ballistic missiles were fired from Yemen at Saudi Arabia. One was intercepted by the Arab coalition while the other landed in a desert area east of the Saudi city of Najran, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

The developments in Yemen are parallel to U.N.-mediated peace talks currently underway in Geneva. The head Houthi envoy to the negotiations denied that the delegation had withdrawn from the talks, adding that a letter of protest had been filed to the United Nations on breaches committed during the conflict. It was reported earlier that the Houthis were absent citing “developments on the ground.”

The Houthi delegate also accused the United Nations envoy of “conspiring” against the militia, Al Arabiya reported.

The city is very important in terms of geographical location. I have heard the city was peacefully handed with no resistance.

UAE, Saudi Arabia operating Chinese UAVs over Yemen

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have both acquired Chinese-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to meet urgent operational requirements arising from their military intervention in Yemen, it was revealed during a panel discussion held by the Atlantic Council think tank on 8 December.

"The drones the UAE is using in Yemen are Chinese because they failed to get US approval," US Marine Corps General (retired) James L Jones said. Gen Jones served as National Security Advisor in 2009-2010 and is now affiliated with the Atlantic Council.

Nawaf Obaid, a former advisor to the Saudi ambassadors to the United Kingdom and the United States, immediately added "that is true, us too", indicating Saudi Arabia has also acquired Chinese UAVs because it could not obtain US ones.

"[The UAVs are] an example of things we could have done, but we didn't do, and now people who are more agile have been able to send drones to the UAE," Jones said. "We have a serious problem in the way and the speed with which we come to the aid of our friends and allies with equipment."

The third member of the panel, Barry Pavel, the director of the Atlantic Council's Scowcroft Center, agreed, saying, "All our Gulf partners want US weapons, they are the best in the world … but it is a really, really difficult process [to obtain them]. If you can't get that wonderful jewel on the shelf, but you can get fake jewellery that still does the job, you are going to start to go in that direction because you are in active operations and you need this equipment."

"We need to get our act together, streamline and make our processes more effective," Pavel added.

When asked about the problems in the US arms export process, Jones identified the end-use monitoring agreements system as "something that most of our allies really dislike".

Hadi loyalists advance on Yemeni capital as end of peace talks looms

Sana'a (dpa) - Troops loyal to Yemen's internationally recognized president, Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi, said Sunday they were advancing on the rebel-held capital of Sana'a as peace talks among the war-ravaged rivals were set to end in Switzerland.

Government troops and allied militiamen have seized a military base from the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the district of Nihm on the outskirts of Sana'a, a pro-Hadi fighter said.

"The National Army and Resistance are progressing towards the other posts held by the Houthis and their allies in Nihm," he told dpa.

Nihm is around 40 kilometres from Sana'a, with rugged mountains separating them.

The reported advance comes after Hadi loyalists tightened their control earlier in the week on the province of Mareb, around 173 kilometres north-east of Sana'a after months of fighting.

The Houthis have controlled Sana'a for more than a year now in a devastating power struggle against the Saudi-backed Hadi government.

Sana'a has been the target of airstrikes by a Saudi-led military coalition that started an air campaign against the rebels in Yemen nearly nine months ago.

Fresh alliance strikes hit a rebel military facility in southern Sana'a on Sunday, causing unspecified casualties and damage, according to local residents.

Two rockets fired by the Houthis from Sana'a exploded in the air before reaching their targets among pro-Hadi forces, the residents added.

There was no comment from the rebels.

A week-long ceasefire in Yemen has repeatedly been breached since it started on Tuesday, with warring sides blaming each other for violations.

The truce was aimed at consolidating UN-sponsored peace talks, which had also begun on Tuesday, among Yemeni rivals with the aim of ending the impoverished country's conflict.

The negotiations are expected to end later on Sunday without progress, the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya TV reported.

Since March, Saudi Arabia and fellow Sunni partners have carried out airstrikes in Yemen against the mostly Shiite rebels, who are fighting to oust Hadi.

Riyadh is keen to deny its rival, Shiite Iran, a foothold in the Arabian Peninsula.

ERC provides medical equipment for hospitals in Yemen
20/12/2015 04:24:00 PM

ABU DHABI, 20th December, 2015 (WAM) -- The Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, has provided a large amount of anti-cancer medicines to hospitals in Lahij, Abyan, Dhale and Taiz governorates in Yemen.

The ERC has also provided the second batch of medical equipment for Al Jomhouria hospital and health centres in Aden as part of its efforts to promote health care in Yemen, which is considered one of the most affected sectors in the current crisis. Giving it special attention, the ERC has prepared an ambitious plan for reviving the functioning of the hospitals as well as to enhance their ability to overcome the current challenges.

The Aden governor has praised the role being played by the ERC to improve medical services in the Yemeni governorates as well as other forms of assistance.

Yemeni forces advance closer to rebel-held capital
December 20, 2015

SANAA: Yemeni government forces were within 40 kilometres of the rebel-held capital on Saturday as they pressed their advance against Houthi rebels in disregard of a UN-brokered ceasefire, military sources said.

They were keeping up pressure in Nihm district, Sanaa province, after significant gains in Marib province, east of the capital.

The forces loyal to President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, and allied tribes in the area, have laid siege to Nihm’s Fardha military, northeast of the capital.

Despite the proximity, the roughly 40 kilometres separating Nihm from Sanaa is mostly rugged mountainous terrain.

Government forces are now heading west, toward the contiguous rebel strongholds of Amran and Saada provinces, which lie immediately to the north of the capital, Ukaymi said.

Military sources said pro-Hadi forces, which are supported by a Saudi-led Arab coalition, brought reinforcements to Hazm on Saturday, including tanks and armoured vehicles.

US President Barack Obama said on Friday there was an “urgent need for all parties to adhere to the ceasefire” after both sides repeatedly violated the truce aimed at helping the talks.

Meanwhile, Yemeni negotiators taking part in UN-sponsored peace talks agreed on Saturday to form a committee to oversee a fragile ceasefire after fresh fighting imperilled their efforts to end Yemen’s civil war, sources close to the talks said

They said the committee would be headed by a Lebanese army general and consist of representatives from Hadi government and from the rival Houthi movement.

Both sides arrived at a hotel in the Swiss city of Biel on Saturday to attend a fifth day of talks aimed at halting the eight-month conflict, which has killed thousands of people and caused widespread destruction and a major humanitarian crisis.

A supposed one-week truce came under strain on Friday when troops loyal to Hadi seized an important northwestern city and a military base from Houthis who still control the capital Sanaa, residents and tribal sources said.

Planes and gunboats from a Saudi-led military coalition also bombarded targets in northern Yemen, residents said.

The United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen voiced deep concern at “numerous reports of violations of the cessation of hostilities,” a UN statement said on Friday.

Special Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed “is deeply concerned at the numerous reports of violations of the cessation of hostilities,” his office said in a statement issued late on Friday.

The special envoy “urges all parties to respect this agreement and allow unhindered access for the delivery of humanitarian assistance to the most affected districts of Yemen,” the statement said.

UAE to train Yemeni resistance men for army
350 fighters are already training in Al Ain

The UAE will train 500 Yemeni resistance fighters at military camps in the country to quality them for joining Yemen’s legitimate army.

Yemen’s news website Masdar Online said the Yemeni army has agreed to integrate nearly 3,500 national resistance men within plans to bolster the armed forces and control liberated areas in the conflict-battered Arab nation.

Quoting military sources in Aden, the network said resistance men seeking to join the Yemeni army have to register with a joint command grouping Yemen’s military and the UAE command on behalf of the Arab coalition in Yemen.

It said hundreds of those accepted in the army have been transferred to training camps in Yemen and to a military base in Eritrea.

“The sources said 500 of the fighters who are physically fit for training will be flown to the UAE for military training to quality them as soldiers,” the network said.

It quoted the sources as saying 350 resistance men have recently arrived at a military camp in the eastern UAE oasis town of Al Ain for training.

“This batch will be receiving training for six months…the graduates will join the Yemen presidential guards,” the report said.

The UAE is a key member of the Saudi-dominated Arab coalition involved in a military campaign to quell an Iranian-backed coup and restore the legitimate regime.
