UN Attempts to Whitewash Griffiths’ Actions
9 June, 2019

The United Nations and its Secretary General Antonio Guterres are seeking to whitewash UN Special Envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths’ actions after the legitimate government in Yemen accused him of bias in implementing the Swedish agreement and the redeployment in Hodeidah and its ports.

UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo will visit Riyadh on Monday and Tuesday to meet with Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and other officials to discuss the situation with Griffiths, news agencies reported.

During her visit to Riyadh, DiCarlo will meet with “Saudi and Yemeni officials to discuss regional peace and security issues, including the situation in Yemen,” announced the UN.

The legitimate government and Yemeni activists stepped up their rhetoric against the envoy and accused him of bias towards Houthis and attempting to legitimize the Houthis’ security forces, which the militias claimed would take over the security and management of ports after their withdrawal.

The Yemeni campaign culminated three weeks ago with a letter sent by the Yemeni President to the Sec-Gen confirming the accusations against Griffiths and demanding a review of his performance, a message to which the UN Secretary-General responded by asserting his confidence in the UN envoy.

However, the ongoing campaign prompted Guterres to send his political assistance to Riyadh to meet Hadi in an attempt to whitewash Griffiths’ actions and reassure the legitimacy that the latter will abide by his mission.

The President sent a letter to UN Sec-Gen accusing Griffiths of bias towards Houthis, saying he worked to provide Houthis guarantees to stay in Hodeidah port under UN umbrella.

“We will give a final and final opportunity to the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Martin Griffiths, to confirm his commitment to the three terms of reference in all his efforts and to enforce the Stockholm Agreement,” the letter read.

“I also want to stress that I can not accept the excesses that your Special Envoy is offering and that threaten to break the chances of a solution that the people are looking for,” he said.

The Sec-Gen responded to Hadi saying that the international organization will spare no effort to maintain Sweden agreements.

“I can also assure you that the United Nations has no intention of establishing an international administration in Hodeidah,” said Guterres.

Griffiths is expected to present his briefing on June 17 where he is likely to report that progress is being achieved in the implementation of the Sweden Agreement, even though the government delegation of the UN mission to monitor the deal, led by Lt. Gen. Michael Lollesgaard, suspended meetings with the Envoy in protest against abuses in the implementation of unilateral redeployment.

Yemeni officials assert that the Swedish agreement means the withdrawal of Houthi militias while government forces and legitimate local authorities manage and secure the Hodeidah port.

Houthis say that the agreement provides international monitoring over the ports and the redeployment process only. Regarding the city and the three ports, the militias believe they must remain under its security and administrative control, as stated in previous statements of its leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi.

Yemeni government accuses Griffiths and Lollesgaard of trying to break the solution in Hodeidah, while the militias continue to consolidate their forces in various areas of Hodeidah and its southern countryside.

Meanwhile, Houthi militias refused to grant entry visas to their areas for about 60 UN observers sent by the Security Council.

Houthis also seek to persuade the UN to transfer the inspection and verification mechanism of vessels and goods arriving in Yemen from Djibouti port to Hodeidah port itself, which is seen by the legitimate government as a step to facilitate the smuggling of weapons.

Many observers believe the UN Envoy will not be able to lead the negotiation phase of a comprehensive political and military solution, which will not be initiated, according to legitimacy, unless measures to establish trust and good intentions of Sweden’s agreement are established.

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia’s air defense forces shot down two weaponized drones launched by Houthis from Yemen toward the city of Khamis Mushayt, a spokesman for the Arab Coalition supporting Yemen’s legitimate government said early Tuesday.

In a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Colonel Turki Al-Maliki said the attack was part of the continuing attempt by “Houthi terrorists” to target civilian installations in Saudi Arabia.

The statement gave no further details.
Houthi-run Masirah TV reported earlier on Monday that the Iran-aligned Houthi movement had carried out attacks on an airbase near Khamis Mushayt.

Coalition forces raid Houthi positions
In Yemen, coalition fighters intensified overnight air strikes on Houthi positions in the districts of Abes and Haradh in the northwestern province of Hajjah.

According to the Yemeni Ministry of Defense website, September Net, the air raids targeted the Houthi concentrations west of Haradh city and destroyed the vehicles of
the militia.

The fighters also targeted a vehicle carrying a number of Houthi fighters in the governorate of Abs.

The coalition led by Saudi Arabia threw its support behind the government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi in early 2015 amid attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis.

Houthi attack on Abha airport: 3 women, 2 children among 26 hurt
12 June 2019

RIYADH — Three women and two children were among 26 people injured in a projectile attack on arrivals hall at Abha International Airport by the Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist militias early Wednesday morning.

Col. Turki Al-Malki, spokesman of the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, said eight people with moderate injuries were transferred to hospital while 18 were treated at the site for minor injuries.

The airport lounge was also damaged, he said.

Among the injured women one each is from Yemen, India and Saudi Arabia. The two injured children are Saudis.

Malki said military and security forces were working to determine the type of projectile used in the terrorist attack.

The Houthi militias claimed through their media full responsibility for the terrorist attack saying a cruise missile was used.

This constitutes a clear recognition and full responsibility for targeting civilians and civilian objects that are subject to special protection under international humanitarian law.

This could amount to a war crime.

This attack also proves the terrorist militia’s acquisition of new special weapons, the continuation of the Iranian regime's support and practice of cross-border terrorism, and the continued violation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2216 and Resolution 2231.

Col. Malki stressed that in the face of the Houthi militias’ terrorist attacks as well as their violations, the Command of Joint Forces of the Coalition will take urgent and timely measures to deter the terrorist militias and ensure the protection of civilians and civilian objects.

In addition, terrorist operatives responsible for the planning and execution of this terrorist attack will be held accountable in accordance with international humanitarian law and its customary rules.

Arab World Condemns ‘Dangerous’ Attack against Saudi Arabia’s Abha Airport
Wednesday, 12 June, 2019

The Arab world condemned on Wednesday the terrorist attack by the Iran-backed Houthi militias in Yemen for against Saudi Arabia’s Abha International Airport.

The United Arab Emirates’ Foreign Ministry strongly denounced the attack that utilized military projectile capabilities, which it deemed as new evidence of the Houthis’ hostile and terrorist tendencies that seek to undermine security and stability in the region.

"The UAE renews its solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its stand with Riyadh in a unified step against any threat to the security and stability of the Kingdom and supports all measures taken by Saudi Arabia in the face of extremism and terrorism to maintain its security of its citizens and expatriate residents," read a statement carried by the UAE news agency (WAM).

"The security of the UAE and Saudi Arabia is indivisible," it noted, adding, "any threat or danger to the Kingdom's security is considered a threat to UAE's security and stability."

Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa slammed the attack as a “dangerous escalation through Iranian weapons.”

He called for a “firm and clear international stance against Houthi terrorism and Iran’s support for it.”

Kuwait denounced the attack as a “dangerous escalation,” voicing its support to whatever measures Saudi Arabia takes in protecting its security and stability.

Egypt slammed the assault, saying attacks against airports are “flagrant violations of all international laws and norms.”

Its Foreign Ministry called on the international community to confront destabilizing terrorist acts.

The legitimate Yemeni government condemned the Abha attack, saying: “The Houthis only understand the language of weapons and force.”

The Arab coalition and legitimacy have no choice but to resort to the military option to end the Houthi terrorism, said government spokesman Rajeh Badi.

Lebanese Prime Minister said the criminal act confirms that efforts were still underway to target the security and stability of the Kingdom. He also voiced his solidarity with the Saudi leadership and people.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the “criminal and dangerous” assault, saying Palestine stands by Saudi Arabia, its King, government and people in confronting such attacks.

The Gulf Cooperation Council strongly deplored the attack, which Secretary General Abdulatif Al-Zayani described as a "terrorist" crime that runs counter to the international humanitarian law.

He denounced the targeting of the populated areas and civilian facilities in Saudi Arabia.

He noted that the act is clear evidence of the Houthi militias' violation of all Islamic values and international laws, according to a statement carried by WAM.

He called on the international community to denounce such aggressive crimes committed by the Houthis against the civilian areas in the kingdom.

He also urged the UN Security Council to put an end to continued attacks carried out by the Houthi militias on Saudi Arabia, saying this is a clear threat to regional security and peace.

UN: Terrorist attack on Abha Airport poses threat to regional security
June 13, 2019

Dubai: The United Nations has expressed its concern over the terrorist attack carried out by the Iran-backed Houthi militia on Abha International Airport.

In a press conference, UN spokesman Farhan Haq described the attack as a serious threat to regional security and undermining the political process in Yemen led by the United Nations.

The United Nations is deeply concerned about the attack, deputy Haq told reporters in New York.
“We urge all parties to prevent any such further incidents, which risk escalating the current situation, pose a serious threat to national and regional security and undermine the UN-led political process,” Haq said.

A missile terror attack by Yemen’s Iran-backed Al Houthi targeted a civilian airport in southern Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, injuring at least 26 and triggering a sharp warning from the Saudi-led military coalition that it would respond firmly.

Evidence points to Iranian Revolutionary Guards supplying Al Houthis with the weapons to target the kingdom, Al Arabiya TV quoted the coalition as saying.

A coalition statement said three women and two children were among the wounded, who were of Saudi, Yemeni and Indian nationalities. It added the attack could amount to a war crime. “This attack also proves this terrorist militia’s acquisition of new special weapons; the continuation of the Iranian regime’s support and practice of cross-border terrorism...” the coalition’s English-language statement said. The attack follows an armed drone strike last month on two oil-pumping stations in the kingdom that were claimed by the militia.

The UAE has condemned the Al Houthi terror attack, saying it was new proof of the militia’s hostile and terrorist approaches that seek to undermine regional security and stability.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation renewed its solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its support for all measures taken to thwart any threat to the security and stability of the kingdom.

Egypt said it was standing by Saudi Arabia following the attack, saying it would “defy any attempt to target” the kingdom. Bahrain branded the missile strike a terrorist and cowardly criminal act against innocent civilians.

Al Houthis have previously targeted Saudi cities with drones and missiles, most of which have been intercepted. In March 2018 an Egyptian was killed in Riyadh by missile shrapnel.

Dubai: The Saudi-led coalition launched several strikes on the Yemeni capital of Sana’a on Thursday.
This comes just one day after an Al Houthi missile attack on Abha airport in Saudi Arabia injured 26.

The terrorist attack was widely condemned and dubbed as a war crime by the coalition.

It vowed a swift and firm response to the attack.

On Thursday, UAE minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Anwar Gargash, criticised the Iran-backed Al Houthi militants in Yemen.

The split nature of the Houthi militia is evident; playing a local role when negotiating a political process in Yemen & puppets & proxies when targeting Saudi civilians. A position complicating the Yemen crisis & impeding the march to peace.
