Air strikes hit around Yemen's capital: TV, residents
June 13, 2019

ADEN (Reuters) - Planes from the Saudi-led military coalition fighting in Yemen bombed areas around the capital Sanaa on Thursday, residents and the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV said.

On Wednesday, the coalition vowed to respond firmly to a Houthi missile attack on a civilian airport in southern Saudi Arabia that wounded 26 people.

Masirah said there had been raids on three sites, including military targets belonging to Houthi forces, on the outskirts of Sanaa.

Residents told Reuters the strikes had targeted military camps west and north of the city.

There was no immediate confirmation from the coalition about the strikes.

The Western-backed, Sunni Muslim coalition has been battling the Iranian-aligned Houthi movement in Yemen since 2015, when it intervened to try to restore the internationally recognized government that was ousted from the capital Sanaa by the Houthis in late 2014.

The project, which cost $100 million is part of the UAE’s continued efforts to enhance the power grid in the southern Yemeni city.
Around 2.5 million Yemeni citizens are expected to benefit from the plan.

The agreement was signed at the headquarters of the Foundation by Ahmed Juma Al Zaabi, Minister of the Federal Supreme Council at the Ministry of Presidential Affairs and Vice President of the Khalifa Foundation, and Dr. Najeeb Al-Awaj, Yemeni Minister of Planning and International Cooperation.

Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of the Foundation.

Al Zaabi stressed the deep brotherly ties between the UAE and Yemen, emphasising the desire of the UAE’s leadership to stand by the brothers in Yemen in their current difficult circumstances.

For his part, Dr. Najeeb Al-Awaj thanked the leadership of the UAE and the Khalifa Foundation for their generous support to the Yemeni people. He said, “It is not strange for our Emirati brothers, whose blood is mixed with the blood of our Yemeni people, to support Yemen in various development and relief fields .”

Mohammed Haji Al Khouri, Director-General of the Khalifa Foundation, told the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that as per the agreement, the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation will supply, install, and operate a 120 MW gas turbine plant with associated power network. It is due to be operational by late 2019.

JEDDAH: Saudi Arabia's air defense forces shot down five drones launched by Houthi terrorists against targets in the Kingdom's southern border region of Asir, a spokesman of the Arab Coalition supporting Yemen's legitimate government said early Friday.

Colonel Turki Al-Maliki said in a statement released by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) that the drones were targeted at Abha international airport and the city of Khamis Mushayt on Thursday night.

"Air traffic and airspace at Abha International Airport are operating normally, and there is no delay in flights and passenger traffic," Al-Maliki said.

He said that "the Houthi terrorist militia is trying to target civilian facilities in desperate and repeated attempts, without achieving any of their irresponsible and hostile objectives."

"These drones were exposed and dropped. We stress on our legitimate right to take appropriate deterrence measures, with such hostile acts and in conformity with international humanitarian law and its customary rules," he said.

It was the second drone attack by the Iran-backed Houthis on Khamis Mushayt in four days. Last Monday, Saudi air defense forces shot down two drones launched toward the city.

Yemen's Houthi rebels claim fresh drone attack on Saudi airport
Source: Xinhua| 2019-06-14 |Editor: Li Xia

SANAA, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for fresh drone attacks on Abha airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia, the group's al-Masirah TV reported early Friday.

The group said Friday that it has launched several drone strikes against the airport in a tit-for-tat move following a series of air strikes by a Saudi-led coalition against the capital Sanaa.

Meanwhile, the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya TV reported that the Saudi air defence forces intercepted and destroyed five bomb-laden drones launched by Houthi militias to Abha airport and border city Khamis Mushait in the same region earlier in the day.

"The airport and the air traffic were operating normally," Turki Al Maliki, spokesperson of the Saudi-led coalition, was quoted by Al Arabiya television as saying.

It was the second attack on the airport since a cruise missile was fired at the airport on Wedensday, which wounded 26 people, including three women and two children.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have led the coalition against Houthis for years in support of Yemen's internationally recognized President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

HRW Deems Houthi Attack on Abha Airport a War Crime

Asharq Al-Awsat

Human Rights Watch declared as an “apparent war crime” on Friday the attack by the Iran-backed Houthi militias in Yemen on Saudi Arabia’s Abha Airport earlier this week.

It urged the Houthis to stop attacks on civilian infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.

Deputy Middle East director at HRW, Michael Page said that Saudi-led Arab coalition airstrikes in Yemen “never justify Houthi attacks on Saudi civilians,” according to a statement.

Twenty-six civilians were wounded in the Houthi missile strike on the airport on Wednesday.

U.S. blames Iran for helping Houthi rebels shoot down drone in Yemen
16 June 2019

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Houthi rebels in Yemen recently shot down a U.S. government-operated drone with assistance from Iran, the U.S. military said in a statement on Sunday.

Lt. Col. Earl Brown, a spokesman for the U.S. Central Command, said the altitude at which the MQ-9 drone was shot down on June 6 marked “an improvement over previous Houthi capability,” a fact that led the military to conclude the rebel group had help from Iran.

Brown also noted that on June 13, Iran separately tried to shoot down yet another U.S. drone over the Gulf of Oman in an effort to disrupt surveillance of Iran’s attack on Kokuka Courageous, one of two oil tankers attacked on Thursday.

U.S. officials have blamed Tehran for those attacks, raising fears about a potential confrontation between the United States and Iran.

Statement from US Central Command on attacks against U.S. observation aircraft
U.S. Central Command
TAMPA, Florida, June 16, 2019 —
8171

A U.S. MQ-9 was shot down over Yemen by what we assess to be a Houthi SA-6 surface to air missile on Jun 6, 2019. The altitude of the engagement indicated an improvement over previous Houthi capability, which we assess was enabled by Iranian assistance.

On June 13, 2019, according to our assessment, a modified Iranian SA-7 surface-to-air missile attempted to shoot down a U.S. MQ-9 over the Gulf of Oman to disrupt surveillance of the IRGC attack on the M/T Kokuka Courageous. The MQ-9 had arrived minutes earlier at 6:20 a.m. local time at the motor tanker (M/T) Altair and had observed the ship on fire.

The SA-7 was ineffective and its closest point of approach to the MQ-9 was approximately one kilometer.

Subsequent analysis indicates that this was a likely attempt to shoot down or otherwise disrupt the MQ-9 surveillance of the IRGC attack on the M/T Kokuka Courageous.

Lt. Col. Earl Brown, U.S. Central Command Spokesman
