Afghan Forces Capture Key Figures From Islamic State's South Asia Branch
May 11, 2020

One of the captured militants was Omar Khalid Khorasani, a senior Islamic State militant.

KABUL -- Afghan security forces say they have captured three senior members of the Islamic State (IS) extremist group's South Asia branch -- including the group's regional leader for South Asia, Abu Omar Khorasani.

Afghanistan's Interior Ministry announced on May 11 that Khorasani was arrested during a recent operation in Kabul.

In a joint statement, Afghanistan's General Directorate of National Security (NDS) and the Interior Ministry said security forces also arrested the extremist group's spy chief and its public relations chief.

The statement did not specify the date of their arrests.

But a private Afghan television channel, ToloNews, quoted an unnamed NDS official as saying all three were captured after information about their whereabouts was provided by four previously detained IS militants.

The South Asia wing of IS is mainly focused on Afghanistan and has carried out a series of high-profile terrorist attacks. Several leaders of the branch also have been captured in recent months.

Afghan security forces on May 6 killed five IS militants and arrested eight others during a raid in the Shakar Dara district on the north side of Kabul.

Afghan authorities say those detained on May 6 included members of a Kabul cell grouping together IS militants and fighters from the Haqqani network, an offshoot of the Taliban.

The NDS attributes several recent terrorist attacks in Kabul to the group, including a March 25 assault on a Sikh temple that killed at least 25 worshippers.

On April 4, Afghan security forces in Kandahar captured the leader of the Khorasan branch of IS in Afghanistan, Abdullah Orakzai, along with several other militants.

India should talk directly to Taliban, says U.S. Special Envoy Zalmay Khalilzad

India should discuss its concerns on terrorism directly with the Taliban, said U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad, adding that he had discussed how India could play a “more active role” in the Afghan reconciliation process during his talks in Delhi on Thursday.

“India is an important force in Afghanistan and it would be appropriate for that [India-Taliban] engagement to take place,” Mr. Khalilzad told The Hindu in an exclusive interview.

The envoy said India had a “significant role” in Afghanistan’s development, but paradoxically, doesn’t play a role in the international peace efforts. “India and Afghanistan have historic ties, and I believe that dialogue between India and the Taliban is important, and it would be important that issues of concern like this [terrorism] are raised directly,” he added.

This is the first time the U.S. has publicly suggested an engagement between India and the Taliban. New Delhi, that still considers the Taliban a terror group allied to Pakistan, has thus far distanced itself from any talks.

During their meeting on Thursday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had raised concerns over increasing violence in Afghanistan and the need to protect minorities including Afghan Sikhs and Hindus.

Mr. Khalilzad, the architect of the U.S.-Taliban agreement, travelled to Doha, Delhi and Islamabad, in an effort to iron out an impasse in the agreement over the release of prisoners and intra-Afghan negotiations. While recognising concerns over the Doha agreement, he told The Hindu that there “was no alternative” to it and hoped that India would engage “all forces” in Afghanistan, including the Taliban.

May 13, 2020

The U.S. Army Contracting Command has selected Raytheon Intelligence & Space, a business of Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX), to train Afghanistan Air Force pilots under a three-year contract valued up to $145 million.

Raytheon will conduct initial flight training for the U.S. Army’s Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation. The Afghanistan Air Force students will go through flight school in third-party nations in Europe and the Middle East. Raytheon will provide tailored training for the Afghanistan Air Force pilots, including classroom, fixed-wing and rotary aircraft instruction.

“Raytheon training experts help the Afghanistan Air Force develop a pipeline of skilled flyers and officers,” said Bob Williams, vice president of Global Training Solutions at Raytheon Intelligence & Space. “Our program uses the latest training techniques, and a focus on individual mentorship to produce well-rounded officers that will help create a secure future for Afghanistan.”

The Raytheon Afghanistan Air Force pilot training program began in 2010. The original mission for basic flight proficiency has expanded to advanced aircraft qualifications and flight techniques. Raytheon’s focus on mentorship and leadership training helps the program maintain a 93 percent graduation rate with every student returned to Afghanistan.

The Afghanistan Air Force Pilot Training program was awarded under the Enterprise Training Services Contract vehicle. Raytheon previously announced a related task order for the Aviation Maintenance Training program.

Raytheon Technologies Corporation is an aerospace and defense company that provides advanced systems and services for commercial, military and government customers worldwide. With 195,000 employees and four industry-leading businesses ― Collins Aerospace Systems, Pratt & Whitney, Raytheon Intelligence & Space and Raytheon Missiles & Defense ― the company delivers solutions that push the boundaries in avionics, cybersecurity, directed energy, electric propulsion, hypersonics, and quantum physics. The company, formed in 2020 through the combination of Raytheon Company and the United Technologies Corporation aerospace businesses, is headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Taliban calls for “transparent” investigation of the recent attacks
May 16, 2020

1589632861400.png

KABUL: The Taliban called for a “transparent and impartial” investigation of the attacks conducted in Kabul and Nangarhar early this week, said Taliban’s spokesperson.

The Taliban Spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said in a press release on Friday, “We firmly call for the transparent and impartial investigation of these attacks in order to expose the dark faces of the perpetrators of these heinous crimes and bring them to justice.”

The statement emphasizes that the Taliban has no relation with the attacks, noting, “Attacks on clinics, funerals and public infrastructure have no place in our policy.”

It underlines that the Dasht-e-Barchi and the Nangarhar incidents are exploited to declare the launch of offensive operations against the Taliban. It is to be noted that US Representative Zalmay Khalilzad also said on Friday that according to the United States’ assessment, the Daesh^Khurasan conducted the attacks on a hospital in Kabul and a funeral in Nangarhar.

In the meantime, calling on the Afghan political bodies to come together, he said, “Rather than falling into the ISIS trap and delay peace or create obstacles, Afghans must come together to crush this menace and pursue a historic peace opportunity.”—NNI

Ashraf Ghani and co is playing ruthlessly foul. They are trying hard to cancel the peace deal.

I have heard something very interesting. Mr. Ghani approached "Kandahar" and asked for top diplomatic position in USA after flip flop ROFL but refused. Then came these recent attacks.

Meanwhile PTM in Pakistan is also like a child lost in rush hours. After Mike Pompeo's recent announcement ground is shaking under PTM seats.

As long as we try the idiotic concept of trying to defeat people instead of defeating a dogma and continue to be the "ugly American" we will face an eternal enemy. The Taliban are supposed to be students. Fight ignorance. At one time the Islamic world had great scholars. Help them to understand that God is not a liar. That WAS Jesus on the cross!
When the Islamic world had great scholars...they had a different mindset(collectively speaking). Today the ppl are busy pointing fingers at others(instead of looking inward)...finding flaws in "them" and blaming their problems at those "others"...which creates an "us vs them". It has nothing to do with religion...religion is just being used to achieve the nefarious goals(whichever group it may be).

Another major contributing factor is the poverty and lack of any hope to build a life...most of these terrorist organizations(like ISIS) emerge out of places that have been bombed to stone age...and there is essentially no structure left(a power vacuum). This gives rise to might is right...and with promises of wealth and what not it is easy for them to find recruits...
...young men who are either angry at the "foreigners" who destroyed their country or are just looking to make some money(oil smuggling in Iraq and Syria or opium in Afghanistan)...or both of those reasons. Syria, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Yemen...all are such examples. If however u give ppl prosperity...u see a decline in such militant activities(like for example IRA).

IMO...if instead of throwing billions at fighting these wars in Syria, Yemen, Libya, Afghanistan, etc...if all the parties involved instead used those billions for development of these countries...there would be a sharp decline in militancy.

Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani and his rival Abdullah Abdullah have signed a power-sharing deal, ending months of political uncertainty.

Dr Abdullah will lead peace talks with the Taliban, should they get under way. ROFL
