Something is ominously wrong with Afghanistan. The Taliban insurgency has survived the best efforts by Nato to defeat it through conventional means. Trying to create a gamechanger, the Americans are going after their leaders but then things seen to be increasingly going south. This is the brand of combatants who survived Soviet bombardment during the Cold War after a long period of a war of attrition and finally emerged victorious. Talks in Kabul are in a limbo. The Taliban are striking at will at and their place and method of their own choosing. The clock is indeed ticking for Afghanistan.

I'm probably very wrong on this one, but things don't seem all that different to me. Yes more of the leaders are being taken out and that's a good thing because it's taking a lot of morale from their cause.

Essentially though, fighting the Taliban, or any terrorist organisation, is like trying to stamp out a trapped air bubble. You stamp it out in one place and it pops up again in another place.

As long as we try the idiotic concept of trying to defeat people instead of defeating a dogma and continue to be the "ugly American" we will face an eternal enemy. The Taliban are supposed to be students. Fight ignorance. At one time the Islamic world had great scholars. Help them to understand that God is not a liar. That WAS Jesus on the cross!

I'm not sure if it would work all that well, I mean there are many different religions and while that's all well and good, some are using their religion as a base for their cause and that's the sort of stuff that needs to be dealt with.

Take ISIS for example. They promise fighters great riches and other sorts of things but the reality could be further from the truth. It's all about wining over the hearts and minds of the people the terrorists are trying to recruit.

They don't promise them nothing, those people minds are already made up, they believe God is real and ordained upon of the people of the earth via Abrahamic prophets, to establish God's religion/law/way of life on the earth. And that's what they're trying to do. It's up to the people of the world to determine if they believe the God of Abraham is indeed a real figure. If he is, then they're supposed to establish religious values, if not, then secularism will dominate.

The problem is that the only prophet they pay any attention to is Mohammed, who is decidedly NOT Abrahamic. To make matters worse, they ignore most of HIS teachings, particularly the prohibition against waging war against Christians and Jews.

Afganistan seems to be turning out to be another Vietnam. It's hardly likely that the Taliban will be ever be defeated there by outside forces. The Russians had also tried to defeat them and they failed to do so. I doubt if whether going after their leaders will really dampen their spirits. As soon as a leader goes down there is always some ready to take his place.

Times Have Changed

Things are not quite the same. Taliban may find it very tough this time to grab the power in Afghanistan. As professor Stephen Cohen, a South Asia expert, says that Afghanistan is easy to handle only if USA and Iran cooperate on one hand, and India and Pakistan on the other. Things seem to be going into the right direction in this regard.

Iran deal has freed the country from the international sanctions; and it seems ready for playing key role in stabilizing the region. The fruits are already seen in shape of curbing ISIS, the Iraqi forces have been regaining some ground lost to ISIS earlier. That is happening more with Iran's help to Shia militias in Iraq which have open links with the Islamic Republic than with USA-Nato. On the other hand, Afghanistan-Pakistan-India have been trying to patch up. Though the hiccups remain here and there, but they are making things work and reducing the hostilities.

Christians, Jews and Muslims, for the most part either not aware of the direction or guidance Abrahamic traditions seek for them, or they dumbed down the religions. They're secular, yet hypocritical and give outward religious appearance. That hypocrisy isn't going to change the fact that they're atheist in the heart. So let's not make this about religion. Afghanistan is a proxy battlefield between Iran, India, NATO, Pakistan, local tribes, corrupt government, etc....It's a big mess because nobody wants to move forward. It's sad that they aren't allowed the opportunity to move forward by many players.

It is never easy to eradicate a undercover force. They have no uniform, and they are everywhere among the civilians. They can be walking right behind you, and you do not even know it. It is actually always the case. Think about various resistance groups in occupied areas throughout the history. They will go on fighting for decades even with no hope of winning.

Remember the reason why Taliban was removed from the power. So the official reason was that they refused to allow the US to go after Osama in their territory. However, just a year before 9/11, several key leaders of Taliban were invited to the US as guests. An offer was made to give them money to exchange for building an oil pipeline through their territory. Taliban wanted to add one of their own demand for exchange, that is to have the US recognition of their legit rule of Afghanistan. The demand was declined. So the oil pipeline deal was also declined. A year after the fall of Taliban. Most of the NATO forces were concentrated around the area where the pipeline was planned.

There's a very real possibility that the Talibans will once again topple the government that currently rules Afghanistan even though many Afghanis may not like it. Unless NATO and the U.S intend to fight the terrorists indefinitely they'll continue to gradually gain ground. And in the end they'll get what they've been after for years.

It would be wise for the U.S and NATO to withdraw from Afghanistan because the war there is a lost cause. Or at least it appears so.

AM General has been awarded a $356.21 million contract from the US government to manufacture and deliver 1,673 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) for the Afghanistan National Army and police, the company announced on 1 August.

The contract will see the company deliver 1,259 M1151 A1B1 models and 414 M1152 A1B2 models. Manufacture of the vehicles will run through to July 2017.

Originally developed for and widely deployed by the US military, the HMMWV is a light utility vehicle. Since its introduction into service in the 1990s it has been continuously improved and upgraded into an armoured, expanded-capacity vehicle for payloads up to 3.2t.

Andy Hove, president and CEO, AM General, said: 'This contract announcement reinforces AM General's position as the global leader in light tactical vehicles. Our international partners continue to rely on us to meet the most diverse range of mission capabilities offered by the most adaptable, affordable light tactical vehicles on the planet. We pride ourselves on developing and delivering these solutions to our customers with the speed, efficiency, and reliability only our company can offer.'

Taliban nearly wipes out army camp in Afghanistan killing at least 58 soldiers

KABUL—The Taliban have killed at least 58 Afghan security forces in a wave of attacks across the country, including an assault that nearly wiped out an army camp in the southern Kandahar province.

Spokesperson Dawlat Wazir said the attack on the army camp late Wednesday, which involved two suicide car bombs and set off hours of fighting, killed at least 43 soldiers. Nine other soldiers were wounded and six have gone missing, he said, adding that 10 attackers were killed.

The Taliban claimed the attack in a media statement.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, a Taliban ambush in the northern Balkh province late Wednesday killed six police, according to Shir Jan Durani, spokesperson for the provincial police chief. A Taliban attack on police posts in the western Farah province, also late Wednesday, killed nine police, said police chief Abdul Marouf Foulad. He said 22 insurgents were killed in the ensuing gun battle.

Afghan forces have struggled to combat a resurgent Taliban since U.S. and NATO forces formally concluded their combat mission at the end of 2014, switching to a counterterrorism and support role.

The Taliban unleashed a wave of attacks across Afghanistan on Tuesday, targeting police compounds and government facilities with suicide bombers, and killing at least 74 people, officials said.

Among those killed in one of the attacks was a provincial police chief. Scores were also wounded, both policemen and civilians. Afghanistan’s deputy interior minister, Murad Ali Murad, called Tuesday’s onslaught the “biggest terrorist attack this year.”
