June 19 (UPI) -- A rocket attack on oil facilities in Basra, Iraq, early Wednesday injured three workers, marking a continued escalation of incidents connected with the Middle East oil industry as tensions between the United States and Iran remain high.

The short-range missile attack focused on a complex used by several major oil companies, including U.S.-based ExxonMobil. Last Thursday, oil tankers were attacked in the Gulf of Oman in an attempt to disable the ships. The U.S. blamed that incident on Iran and responded Monday by sending 1,000 additional troops to the region.

Last month, the U.S. State Department ordered all non-emergency personnel from its embassy in Iraq as a result of rising tensions in the region.

ExxonMobil likewise had moved its foreign staff out of Basra's West Qurna 1 oilfield in May. One official told Kurdish media outlet Rudaw that Wednesday's missile attack targeted ExxonMobil administrative offices.

Mosul Mayor Zuhair Araji said the Nineveh Operations Command on the eastern bank of the city came under attack by short-range rockets hours before the Kurdish oilfield attack.

"A Katyusha rocket at that was fired at 10:35 p.m.on the west bank of Mosul nearby Tal Afar terminal landed just outside the Nineveh Operations Command compound," he said.

So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack

Rouhani: Breaking nuclear deal the least Iran can do to counter U.S.

June 19 (UPI) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhanisaid Wednesday plans to violate the 2015 nuclear deal by adding to Tehran's uranium stockpile is the least possible step it can take.

Iran said this week it plans to begin enriching more uranium for the stockpile on June 27. Rouhani told his cabinet Wednesday that plan is Iran's "minimum measure" to answer the United States' withdrawal from the pact and new sanctions from Washington aimed at hindering Tehran's economy.

The nuclear deal was brokered in 2015 between Iran and a coalition led by the United States under former President Barack Obama. Last year, President Donald Trump announced his intention to withdraw from the accord and has since taken increasingly aggressive actions to punish Iran.

Rouhani criticized European leaders Wednesday, saying they haven't fully committed to a deal without the United States and have refused to engage in normal trade, for fear of the U.S. sanctions.

"The other party [to the deal], however, has not only refused to keep its commitments... but also brought [its] main spirit into question," he said, noting that spirit is "restoration of decent economic relationship between Iran and the world."

Rouhani also said the U.S. sanctions are hurting third-world nations that used to trade with Iran.

"This is not sanctioning. This is a crime against humanity and economic terrorism."

Tensions between Iran and the United States have risen in recent weeks. U.S. officials have said Iran is behind several attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman since last month. Rouhani deflected the blame Wednesday.

"Our close ties to Asia, Japan and China prompted some to attack two oil tankers on the very day that the Japanese premier (Shinzo Abe) was our guest," Rouhani said.

Maj. Gen Hossein Salami, who leads Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, said Tehran's ballistic missile technology changes the "balance of power" in the region. He reiterated claims that Iran has a missile capable of destroying a U.S. aircraft carrier to "end the story of American aircraft carriers in the area."

"If we got this technology, we could target the enemies," he said. "We tested it at sea to hit the target precisely.

Salami said diplomacy is not known without power, and "we are safe when we are powerful."

The UAV was flying in international airspace as per the article, why on earth would Iran shoot it down? This only shows how reckless Iran is. What would the Intl community think of that?

A US-made Global Hawk spy drone was shot down by the IRGC on the Southern coasts of Iran in Hormozgan province today, using its powerful air defense system named Third of Khordad.

US Spy Drone Downed by Iran's Home-Made Short-Range Missile Defense System

The IRGC announced in a statement early Thursday that the US-made Global Hawk surveillance drone was brought down by its Air Force near the Kouh-e Mobarak region in the Central district of Jask after the aircraft violated Iran's airspace.

The RQ-4 Global Hawk unmanned aircraft system (UAS) can fly at high altitudes for more than 30 hours, gathering near-real-time, high-resolution imagery of large areas of land in all types of weather. Meantime, a US official said a US Navy MQ-4C Triton high-altitude drone was shot down by Iranian surface-to-air missile.

The IRGC Aerospace Force unveiled the Third of Khordad air defense system with the capability to trace four targets and destroy them with eight missiles all at once in 2014. The Third of Khordad air defense system which was completely designed and manufactured by Iranian experts was unveiled during the Supreme Leader's tour of the IRGC's Aerospace Exhibition, where state-of-the-art equipment and hardware were showcased. The Third of Khordad air defense system was manufactured in 18 months and can trace all types of flying targets within a range of 75 kilometers. The Third of Khordad air defense system can trace and target fighter jets, bombers and cruise missiles up to 27,000 meters (81,000ft) high. All its components have been placed in a vehicle and its radar, tracing and missile-launching systems have been improved. An IRGC Aerospace Force commander said in 2014 that the defense system can be compared to the sophisticated S-300 long-range air-defense missile shield, adding that its range will be increased to 100km and then 200km in future.

IRGC Commander Major General Hossein Salami confirmed downing of a US spy drone on the Southern coasts of Iran on Thursday, stressing that the move should alert Washington officials to stay away. "This morning, the IRGC Air Force bravely downed an enemy spy drone which had crossed our borders and was violating our national security," General Salami said, addressing a congress in the Western province of Kurdistan on Thursday.

He added that the incident sent "a clear message" to the US and other enemies that Iran will show a firm and crushing response to any aggression. "Borders are our red lines and any enemy which violates them will not go back home and will be annihilated. The only way for enemies is to respect Iran's territorial integrity and national interests," General Salami said. "We declare that we do not want war with any country but we are fully ready for war and the today incident was a clear instance of this precise message," he underscored.

Not clear if the drone was a RQ-4 Hawk or MQ-4C Triton...

Iran has consistently said it was a RQ-4 Hawk, whilst the US denied everything for 8 hours then said it was a MQ-4C Triton, but now some are saying it was a RQ-4 Hawk.

The MQ-4C is based heavily on the RQ-4 and is a brand new recon drone developed specifically for maritime recon and expected to enter into service later this year.
