Do you think that Russia would attempt to invade a NATO member state? Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and even Poland are countries which would be on top of Putin's list out of all NATO states. Do you think Putin would risk such a move and hope that other NATO states would not respond despite being forced to by international law?

Putin is a smart man he's trying to defend his country from west allies at the same time keep Russia a superpower country .He knows clearly that any step from Russia against NATO will cost him a lot or may leads to loss its country because NATO's allies can bring damage to Russia easily . I can see from Russian situations they're in defense position not attack position !
So, I don't think Russia will commit crap and do that ..

Russia has no agenda for invading and NATO country, it's all media propaganda. Russia wants NATO to stay as far away as possible from its borders. Why would those countries be on top of Putin's list? They have been trade partners for a very long time and what kind of benefits would invading any of these countries yield for Russia? Do you think NATO would try to be direct and invade Russia: I highly doubt that since their tactic has been to encroach on Russia's borders by admitting nearby countries into the alliance.

He won't touch any NATO country anytime soon. He is trying to "defend" ex-Russian states from west enemies and he is making slowly but steady moves.

Currently, Russia's interests are geared toward the acquisition of oil to boost their ailing economy, promotion of the Russian race and testing of new missiles with help from the Ukrainian rebels. Even if it bears a grudge against NATO member-countries, invading one would be foolhardy.

A direct Russian military invasion is out of question. Rather Russia would use sneaky methods to fund an insurgency of sorts. Then can then secretly arm the insurgents. But save for that, Russia definitely won't attack any NATO country unless they are desperate enough to start WW III which might not end well for them anyway.

He would never do that, just look at whats happened to the Russian economy from the Ukraine crisis, Putin would have to be very stupid to attack a NATO country, as he would not gain anything from it, and would instead probably drive his country's economy into the ground. I don't think he is that dumb so no I don't that that it will be happening anytime soon.

What he is trying to do at the moment is show a sign of strength, that he won't be backing down, but even that has sent the Ruble into a free fall, and led to several other problems inside the country.

Is that not what the US did with Ukraine? US has vested over $5 billion into Ukraine and has "supported" the "revolution" of the country and is now fully supporting the new government.

And Russia didn't like it. Had it not been for Uncle Sam's involvement in the ousting of the Ukrainian president who was Putin's ally, we wouldn't have the war in Ukraine right now. Either way, the involvement of foreign powers in the affairs of another country ultimately lead to . . .

But the U.S [and others] never learn anything from history.

"Whoever wishes to foresee the future must consult the past; for human events ever resemble those of preceding times. This arises from the fact that they are produced by men who ever have been, and ever shall be, animated by the same passions, and thus they necessarily have the same results."

Putin for all intents and purposes have invaded a NATO country, Ukraine applied to join NATO a few years back, but the application got shelved. Before WW2, Britain and France had an alliance with Czechoslovakia. Britain sold Czechoslovakia out to the Nazis. Treaties are not worth that much.

At the moment I'd say it was unlikely, but don't dismiss any small incursions into certain territories, simply so that he tests the water. He knows that it would be difficult to justify to a lot of countries around the world. But he has his own domestic agenda to consider. It doesn't need to be a full invasion to placate the desires of some of the nationalists in his country.

They are already supporting rebels and are avoiding a transparent conflict.

Depends how far Western sanctions go. If West finds different gas supplier than Russia and on top of that impose new sanctions. Russia would have no choice but to start war.
