Hi guys,
I open this topic because I would like it to become the first source of info and news about the Italian Navy.

There are a few programs already financed/approved by the italian parliament.

1-FREMM: as many of you will know Italy and France has in common the project for a Multirole Fregate class called FREMM, currently Italy has 7 of this ships in service with the lates one given to the navy the 24th of April. Italy is still building 3 more ships of this class.
2-LHD Trieste: the new ship that will replace the Giuseppe Garibaldi as main ship for anphibious assault operations and sometimes will take the role of Aircraft Carrier when the Cavour won’t be available, it is 33.000 tons and will be able to carry up to 6 F-35 in normal conditions and 10 at total war conditions.
3-PPA: Italy is building 7 (10 approved) new PPA ships with tonnage between 4.500 and 5.000 tons, devided in 3 categories, light used for patrolling green water, light+ and Full both capable of AAW and ASW, on war time it could be used as escorts together with larger ships like FREMM or the Orizzonte class.
4-U212: Italy is building two new Todaro class submarines to add to the 4 already in service of this class.
5-LSS: Italy is building a new Supply ship of 24.000 tons to take the place of older class LSS.

This video will have some more infos like armaments, top speed etc etc

There are also some rumors leaked by insiders of the navy or some project already public but still not approved by the parliament:
1- 2 new DDX class Destroyer of 13.000 tons that should take the place of the Durant de la Penne class ships.
2- 6/8 new PPX class Light Fregate of 3.500 tons that should take the place of 6/8 PPA in case that the DDX are built.
3- 3 new LXD class landing assault ship of 16.000/20.000 tons to take the place of the 3 San Marco class 8.000 tons ships.

In this video there will be some more infos about the DDX and PPX project:

In a few days a friend of mine should upload also a video dedicated to the LXD class ships.

So its like a plan of modernization the naval forces judging by the number of units to be acquired. I would like to know about the Todaro if you will, are those subs indigenously made in Italy or JV with another country? It looks like Italy is gearing up for more NATO involvement considering the ongoing threats coming from the east.

No, the Sauro class was an indigenous class but never got anywhere, in fact what it’s called in Italy Todaro class is just the produced under license by Fincantieri U212, the 2 new subs should be an updated versions of the U212 with some new sensors and should take the place of the last two Sauro class.

Yeah, Italy is trying to renovate the navy scaling up in tonnage because the new FREMM Fregates are more or less 5.500 tons (the Italian version) and will take the place of older 3.000 tons Fregate.
The PPA (5.000 tons) and PPX light Fregates (3.500 tons) will take the place of lighter patrol ships of 1.000 and 1.500 tons.
The new DDX class of 13.000 tons should take the place of the older DdlP class of 8.000 tons.

The nice thing about this it is that the FREMM should cost 1/3 of the older Fregates to operate and the PPA should cost 1/3 of the cost of the FREMM.

As I was saying a few hours ago, Italy is also starting a project to create the next LHD for the Italian Navy to take the place of the San Marco Class ships.
The three ships will be between 16.000 and 20.000 tons.
Here’s a video that shows some more info about the ships and how it should come out to be

Well, the FREMM will be finished by the end of the year, the first PPA will be given to the navy by 2019, all the other project will finish/begin by 2022

Well right now even without the new ships Italy is one of the strongest navy in Europe and could comfortably take on the Black Sea Russian Navy, with all of the new FREMM, the new PPA that will deliver all of the 7 already in construction ships between 2020 and 2025, the new DDX, PPX and LXD ships that should be ready by 2030, I think that could be one if not the major player in the Mediterranean Sea by 2030

Italy acquired the U-212 due to the fact it was cheaper in the end along with TOT, and buying the Scorpion class would most likely let France Monopolize their naval contracts due to France allowing them jointly develop/manufacture the Horizon-class and FREMM-class. not only will their major warships go into effect, their is plans for them to acquire F-35Bs so they can get strike capabilities in the Mediterranean.
@wareagle Italy will be one of the major powers of the Mediterranean in future along with Turkey, Algeria, France and Egypt.

Well theoretically is the reverse, because Italy is monopolizing the French Navy market because has recently become official that Fincantieri (an state run Italian company) bought half of STX becoming the majority shareholder of the French company, that is the company that built the Charles de Gaulle, part of the FREMM and if I’m not mistaken also both of the French Orizzonte class Destroyer

Hi guys,
I would like to discuss about the new vehicles of the Italian Army:
1- C2 Ariete MBT: it would be an upgrade of the C1 that would feature better survivability, handling and and combat systems, this project has been already approved and financed by the parliament and the Prototype is in the working.
2- Centauro B2: it is an upgrade with a new gun, armor, better handling and combat systems.
This project has been already financed and approved and the prototype is in testing.
3-AH249 Mangusta II: it is and upgrade of the AW129 to feature better top speed and range, better resistance to extreme temperatures, sand, snow and sea corrosion (for use by the LHD), it will feature also a reduce emission of infrared signals.
This project is already approved and financed and the prototype is into working.
4- Lince NEC: it’s a normal Lince but with Network capabilities.

(There is also the Dardo II, but it still hasn’t been financed by the parliament)

A friend of mine made a video about this topic showing more in depth info about these vehicles.
If you take a look it would be appreciated.

During the month of April, the ex-director of the office for the Aeronautic Armaments Francesco Langella (he was in charge till the end of March) has given an interview talking about the projects for the Italian Air Force.
He talked about a new variant of the C-27 cargo plane called EC27 Jedi II that would be un upgrade of the already in line Jedi I, the Jedi I has been used already in Afganistan as Aerial Electronic Warfare platform.
He talked also about the new UAV P2HH giving some infos about the upgrades compared to the P1HH.
These two are the main topics, but he also talked about the upgrade of the software for the EF2000, the acquisition of new M346 and the new Scout Helicopters.
A friend of mine has made a video discussing about these, if you want to take a look there is some info about all of these topics, both the major and the minors.

Hi everybody,

There are some smaller news about the vehicles for the Army and the Air Force.

There are some news about the P2HH UAV.

First of all the wings will be enlarged, the wingspan will increase.

The empennage structure will keep the same shape but will be enlarged and also reinforced.

At the end of the wings will be added new composite winglets.

Obviously also the landing gear will be reinforced in order to resist the landing with more weight.

A new machine will take the place of the older Defender 90 as light vehicle for the 9th regiment Col Moschin.

The new vehicle is the Flyer 72 GMV for a total of 9 units (with 18 more in option).

On top of the chassis can be mounted a wide variety of weapons.

Additional machine guns can be mounted on the lateral doors.

The vehicle can be carried and lunched by C130J, C27J planes and CH47F helicopters.

There are some news on the FRECCIA II, the chassis will be heavily V shaped to protect it more from IED explosives.

There are also some news about the Ariete II, the protection against IED and mines will be improved with new 26 composites plaques.

Also the tracks will be changed and improved to get better grip and overall performance on all terrains.
