UN says missiles fired at Saudi Arabia have 'common origin'
The components 'bore the castings of a logo similar' to that of a UN-blacklisted company

United Nations officials have found that missiles fired at Saudi Arabia by Yemen's Houthi rebels appear to have a "common origin", but they are still investigating US and Saudi claims that Iran supplied them, according to a confidential report.

The officials travelled to Saudi Arabia to examine the debris of missiles fired on July 22 and November 4, wrote UN secretary general Antonio Guterres in the fourth bi-annual report on the implementation of UN sanctions and restrictions on Iran.

They found "that the missiles had similar structural and manufacturing features which suggest a common origin", said Mr Guterres in the Friday report to the UN Security Council.

The report comes amid calls by the United States for Iran to be held accountable for violating UN Security Council resolutions on Yemen and Iran by supplying weapons to the Houthis.

Saudi-led forces, which back the internationally-recognised Yemeni government, have fought the Iran-allied Houthis in Yemen's more than two-year-long civil war. Saudi Arabia's crown prince has described Iran's supply of rockets to the Houthis as "direct military aggression" that could be an act of war.

Iran has denied supplying the Houthis with weapons, saying the US and Saudi allegations are "baseless and unfounded".

Mr Guterres's report said the UN officials saw three components, which Saudi authorities said came from the missile fired on November 4. The components "bore the castings of a logo similar to that of the Shahid Bagheri Industrial Group" — a UN-blacklisted company.

The officials are "still analysing the information collected and will report back to the Security Council", wrote Mr Guterres.

A separate report to the Security Council last month by a panel of independent experts monitoring sanctions imposed in Yemen found that four missiles fired this year into Saudi Arabia appear to have been designed and manufactured by Iran.

However, the panel said it "as yet has no evidence as to the identity of the broker or supplier" of the missiles, which were likely shipped to the Houthis in violation of a targeted UN arms embargo imposed on Houthi leaders in April 2015.

Most UN sanctions on Iran were lifted in January last year when the UN nuclear watchdog confirmed that Tehran fulfilled commitments under a nuclear deal with Britain, France, Germany, China, Russia and the United States. But Iran is still subject to a UN arms embargo and other restrictions.

The United States on Thursday presented for the first time pieces of what it said were Iranian weapons supplied to the Iran-aligned Houthi militia in Yemen, describing it as conclusive evidence that Tehran was violating UN resolutions.

Reuters was given advanced access to the military hangar at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling just outside of Washington where the US Defense Department put the fragments of weaponry on display and explained how it concluded that they came from Iran.

The arms included charred remnants of what the Pentagon said was an Iranian-made short-range ballistic missile fired from Yemen on Nov. 4 at King Khaled International Airport outside Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh, as well as a drone and an anti-tank weapon recovered in Yemen by the Saudis.

Iran has denied supplying the Houthis with such weaponry.

“The US has long believed that Iran is providing weaponry to proxies and partners and militias throughout the region, and what we have here to show you today is proof,” said Pentagon spokeswoman Laura Seal, adding Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates had recovered the arms and loaned them to Washington.

Saudi-led forces, which back the Yemeni government, have been fighting the Iran-allied Houthis in Yemen’s more than two-year-long civil war.
Unprecedented presentation
The unprecedented presentation by the Pentagon is part of its follow-through on President Donald Trump’s new Iran policy, which promises a far harder line toward Tehran.

US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, was due to see the weapons on Thursday. The US mission to the United Nations said she would offer “irrefutable evidence that Iran has deliberately violated its international obligations.”

Under a UN resolution that enshrines the Iran nuclear deal with world powers, Tehran is prohibited from supplying, selling or transferring weapons outside the country unless approved in advance by the UN Security Council. A separate UN resolution on Yemen bans the supply of weapons to Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi and others.

Katie Wheelbarger, principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, acknowledged that there could be implications of such an accumulation of evidence against Iran, to include sanctions.

“You could see future sanctions... But the first step is at least to bring awareness and understanding and to have a similar picture of what we’re looking at,” Wheelbarger said.
Iran links
The Pentagon offered a detailed explanation of all of the reasons why it believed the arms came from Iran, noting Iranian corporate logos on arms fragments and the unique nature of the designs of Iranian weaponry.

That included the designs of short-range “Qiam” ballistic missiles. The Pentagon said it had obtained fragments of two Qiam missiles, one fired on Nov. 4 against the airport and another fired on July 22.

The Pentagon cited corporate logos of Iranian defense firms on jet vanes that help steer the missile’s engine and on the circuit board helping drive its guidance system. It also said the missile’s unique valve-design was only found in Iran.

Iran, it said, appeared to have tried to cover-up the shipment by disassembling the missile for transport, given crude welding used to stitch it back together.

“The point of this entire display is that only Iran makes this missile. Theyhave not given it to anybody else,” Seal said. “We haven’t seen this in the hands of anyone else except Iran and the Houthis.”

A new UN report found that the July 22 and Nov. 4 missiles fired at Saudi Arabia by Yemen’s Houthi rebels appeared to have a “common origin.” But the report said UN officials were still investigating US and Saudi claims that Iran supplied them.

The Pentagon put on display other weapons with designs it said were unique to Iran’s defense industry. It pointed to a key component of a Toophan anti-tank guided missile and a small drone aircraft, both of which were recovered in Yemen.

It also showed components of a drone-like navigation system like the one the Pentagon says was used by the Houthis to ram an exploding boat into a Saudi frigate on Jan. 30. The United Arab Emirates seized the system in late 2016 in the Red Sea.

“What makes these exploding boats so dangerous is not just that they can explode. It’s that they have a guidance system that allows them to track and hit a moving target without an operator on board,” Seal said.

“This computer system here represents that navigational system.”

US: Ballistic missiles fired on Saudi Arabia were provided by Iran
By: Tara Copp
14 Dec 2017

U.S. intelligence has determined that two ballistic missiles fired on Saudi Arabia this year were manufactured and provided to Yemen Houthi rebels by Iran, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced Thursday.

Haley, who stood in front of components from both missile launches, said the evidence behind her proved that Iran is in violation of a UN resolution that supported the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the agreement former President Barack Obama’s administration signed with Iran to halt its nuclear weapons program.

While the JCPOA itself does not specify ballistic missiles, that resolution called for Iran to also halt its ballistic missile weapons program.

“Iran is defying the international community,” Haley said.

Haley said President Donald Trump and his administration would be working with the international community and Congress on how to increase enforcement of the ballistic missile terms in the UN resolution.

“Everything doesn’t have to be tied to the nuclear deal, but it does have to be tied to the security resolution,” Haley said. “We have to do something about these violations. You will see us build a coalition to really push back against Iran.”

The Scud-class 37-foot-long missiles targeted King Khalid International Airport on Nov. 4 and Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, on July 22.

“Just imagine if this missile had been launched against Dulles Airport, or JFK,” Haley said.

At a hangar on Joint Base Anacostia in Washington, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency had reassembled components from the two launches to establish that both were Qiam short-range ballistic missiles and in a briefing with reporters, identified the markings that they said proved the missile was manufactured in Iran.

The combined evidence, Haley said, showed “unequivocally that these weapons were supplied by the Iranian regime.”

A defense official who spoke on the condition of not being identified said that some of the wear they analyzed on the missiles, including evidence that the missiles have been welded back together, supported their assessment that at least the Nov. 4 missile had been cut in half to more easily transport into Yemen.

In another display in the hangar, the DIA pointed to the manufacturer logo on the missile actuator, which they said belongs to Shahid Bagheri Industrial Group, an Iranian manufacturer.

Houthi rebels, who are in a civil war with Yemen’s government and have been targeted for more than a year during a Saudi-led and U.S.-supported air campaign, claimed responsibility for the Nov. 4 ballistic missile launch.

The agency also reassembled drones and recovered parts of remotely controlled explosive boats it said Iran used to strike the Saudi frigate HMS Al-Madinah in the Red Sea on Jan. 30.

“Several countries will be sending delegations to view this material” in the coming days, Haley said, as the U.S. works to build support to increase pressure on Iran.

Bros. 2018 will be a very dangerous year. Within the targets are Iran,Turkey and Pakistan.
IMO Greece and Egypt could try to do an offensive strike in Cyprus.

Issue is not making ICBM but the diplomatic and economic sanctions that will come to our way..Iran with all its oil resources lack far behind and we don't hold that much already..With the clout around us we can grow more military and economically. An alliance can't be simply military it has to be translated into economics to trickle down the benefits to common folks otherwise no benefit..
