I would love to travel to Russia. However, everyone I have spoken with says it is not safe for black Americans. Racist attacks happen with a relatively regular basis. Even the state department says that it could be dangerous. I wonder what Russia is doing about this if anything? I also wonder if some of these reports are overblown. Has anyone been to Russia and can comment on the tensions there? I definitely would not go now. There is too much going on.

Those reports are quite true.My friends from Africa were nearly lynched as they were strolling down a street. If it were not for the timely intervention of the police, they could have been dead meat. Sad to say but its like this habit is condoned by the majority. So if i were you,i would reconsider my travel plans.

Russia is very cold towards black and gays. I hear about more gay and black murders in Russia than anywhere else, and many of the victims never receive justice. Most victims are pure African, as opposed to African Americans or African Russians, but they still face dangers nonetheless.

I hadn't heard this until you brought it up. Curious, I googled it and it does appear that there is considerable truth to the matter. I didn't read in depth enough to determine whether it is more so for black Americans as opposed to black any other nationality, but I agree with Jeremy. You might want to consider a lovely Alaskan cruise or something. Anything but a trip to Russia.

Russia seems to be intolerant of anyone who isn't a white heterosexual. Personally, I would love to visit Russia, but I am not sure that I want to spend my money in a country which acts like this. Actually, stryker, Alaska sounds like a wonderful alternative. I expect the attitude towards Americans is a hangover from the Cold War - or maybe just jealousy because you guys got the first man on the moon!

There are those who advice that if a black must visit Russia then Moscow would be your best bet. But even there, you shouldn't stray too far from the city center. Beyond those defined boundaries, your safety isn't guaranteed. Would you want to visit Russia only to stay in one place for your entire stay in the country? It's not worth it IMO. There are lots of better places to visit.

From my knowledge of Russian culture and Russian friends, Russia sounds like a great place to travel, and Moscow sure has lot of sights to see and drink in. However, those Northern Countries -- beautiful Scandinavia included has its talks of racism, though I have not heard too much about hate crimes -- can seem to be a bit sheltered and more racist than countries with more mixed populations. I am not sure what's to see in Alaska, but there sure are a lot of very friendly Alaskans that I've met!

That is all interesting. I don't plan on going to Russia anytime soon. I had heard of racism in Poland and Slovakia. I went to both of those countries in 2013. I was a little nervous about going but I did not have any problems except one. When I was in Poland, a man called me a monkey and he had a beer in his hand,. I kept walking and ignored him. But I think Russia is worse so I guess I won't be going.

It is spreading to other western nations. Russia has been fighting Islam since the Afghan war in the 1980s and has been the victim of terrorist attacks.

Right wing elements are spreading to Greece. The Greek government claims it has to cut costs, but meanwhile can still afford to allow in immigrants. Spain is another potential hot bed. 25% youth unemployment and thousands of Spanish youths going abroad to find jobs, meanwhile the Spanish government is still allowing in more immigrants.

Most racism is caused by economics. The Russian economy is in poor shape, and the people have to take out their anger someplace. The worse the economy the more racism increases.

Racialism is everywhere if you ask me. A reporter may give their own opinion based on a single occurrence. People tend to exaggerate things. If you would like to travel to Russia carry out a through research to find a reputable tour company that will be responsible for you when you visit. Be vigilant and avoid going to places that may be risky for you.

I've read reports about Russians being intolerant to gays, even going so far as to deprive the LGBT of the opportunity to keep their driver's license, but to actually be biased toward other races, it's something relatively new to my ears. I have always wanted to visit the Red Square but I guess I'd have to put that plan on hold. My feeling is that aside from African-Americans, they're also hostile toward Asians. I just can't understand the bigotry that Putin is promulgating in the country.

All of eastern Europe seems to have that problem. What is ironic is that some of the cultures that are racist were once treated as inferior due to racism in their history. Russia is a good example. The Nazis thought Russians (Soviets) were inferior and despised them and had no problem killing them. You would think that Russians would remember this and try and treat others right. But some don't feel that way which is very strange. Not all of the Russian people are like that I'm sure. But the ones that are clearly don't know their own history. It would be like African Americans making white people slaves. That would be worse double standard ever.

Wow that is very sad i never perceived Russia to be that racist particularly in this modern age where the world is getting more and more color blind everyday.

While the fact that Russia has some racism i'm sure it's not against blacks. The most likely thing to happen is discrimination against homosexuals or stuff like this. They are somewhat tolerant with blacks.

Russia is totally old-fashioned against some certain aspects like homosexuality and so on, it's a fake puritanism. Have you seen that news where they covered the penis of a centuries old statue? Ridiculous!
