Raytheon has been awarded a long-anticipated USD2.379 billion Foreign Military Sales contract to provide Qatar with 10 Patriot fire units and spares.
In a 19 December announcement, the Pentagon said work on the effort is expected to be complete by mid-2019, and that about half the funding (USD1.174 billion) would be obligated from fiscal year 2010 (FY 2010) procurement accounts.
This deal has been developing for several years, and the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress in November 2012 that Qatar had requested 11 Patriot Configuration-3 Modernized Fire Units and a variety of other equipment. In July the Qatari government signed letters of offers and acceptance (LOAs) for the Patriot air defence systems as part of a larger modernisation programme including Apache attack helicopters and Javelin guided anti-tank weapons.
