Raytheon has been awarded a long-anticipated USD2.379 billion Foreign Military Sales contract to provide Qatar with 10 Patriot fire units and spares.

In a 19 December announcement, the Pentagon said work on the effort is expected to be complete by mid-2019, and that about half the funding (USD1.174 billion) would be obligated from fiscal year 2010 (FY 2010) procurement accounts.

This deal has been developing for several years, and the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress in November 2012 that Qatar had requested 11 Patriot Configuration-3 Modernized Fire Units and a variety of other equipment. In July the Qatari government signed letters of offers and acceptance (LOAs) for the Patriot air defence systems as part of a larger modernisation programme including Apache attack helicopters and Javelin guided anti-tank weapons.

The article says that work on this Patriot system will be completed in 2019. That's five years in the future. There has been a lot happening in that region in the past five years. And, from the looks of things, even more is going to happen in the next five years. So, by 2019, would Qatar still be around to use the Patriot system?

Sounds plausible. Now what are the odds that, before that happens, Saudi Arabia becomes annexed by another country? Or has it happened already?

Saudi Arabia being annexed by another country is what some people wish to see. Who is going to take that big risk to invade a country in the size and importance of Saudi Arabia? It will be the graveyard of the invaders very plain and simple.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the next 5 years, anything can happen like a natural disaster could occur and cause damage and loss of lives as well. I don't think anyone would want to invade maybe the ISIS would, since they are willing to sacrifice their own people for the common good in their own mind it would mean doom for them if they did. Saudia Arabia is big and also, has quite good defense systems as well and any who would invade would lose quite a lot of men in the process and the left over ones will not have the courage maybe to continue on in the battle.
