Jordan's King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) has completed a pre-production example of its latest 4x4 Al Jawad Mk IV internal security vehicle (ISV).

The vehicle is based on a Ford 550 series chassis, which has been fitted with a new all-welded steel armour hull, which is said to provide ballistic protection to level CEN B6 standard.

The overall layout is similar to the earlier 4x4 Al Jawad Mk III ISV, which has been built in significant numbers for the domestic market as well as a number of export customers.

"This is a new design and we started with a clean sheet of paper but retained the name Al Jawad as our existing customers are very familiar with this brand name," said a member of the KADDB design team.

The Mk IV features a more streamlined design with the protected engine compartment at the front of the vehicle.

The crew compartment extends to the rear and has seats for the commander, driver, and eight dismounts who are seated four on either side facing inwards. There are doors in the sides and rear, and vision blocks and associated firing ports are also provided.

The Mk IV features a single door in the rear while previous vehicles had twin doors. Special attention has been provided to the door and hatch design to avoid any bullet splash from entering.

The front and rear wheel arches have been redesigned and will now detach if the vehicle hits an obstacle.

The 8.5-tonne vehicle is powered by a 300 hp diesel engine coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission, which provides a power-to-weight ratio of 35.2 hp/tonne. This enables the vehicle to achieve a maximum road speed of up to 130 km/h and an operating range of up to 650 km.

SOFEX 2016: KADDB rolls out heavy APC

The King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) unveiled the latest version of its heavy armoured personnel carrier (APC), the Al-Dawsar, at SOFEX 2016 in Jordan.

Al-Dawsar is based on a surplus Tariq main battle tank (MBT) hull that is essentially an upgraded British Centurion MBT. Some 293 Tariq MBTs were built but they have now been phased out of Jordanian Army frontline service and are available for conversion.

Previous versions of the KADDB heavy APC had a much-modified Tariq hull with a raised roofline and this is retained in the latest Al-Dawsar. One version had a widened hull that had a crew access ramp in the rear and hull front; this was known as the Modular Armored Platform II (MAP II).

The Al-Dawsar retains the standard Tariq hull but has a raised superstructure. Its US L-3 Combat Propulsion Systems AVDS 1790 V-12 diesel engine develops 750 hp and is coupled to an Allison CD 850-6A automatic transmission at the rear.

The hydropneumatic suspension of Tariq is retained, providing an improved cross-country ride over the original Centurion suspension.

The raised crew and troop compartment is at the front of the hull. In addition to the commander/gunner, it can carry seven dismounts seated individually facing inwards. However, alternative seating arrangements could increase this to up to 10 dismounts. The area to the rear is used to stow equipment such as ammunition.

In addition to the four hatches (three left and one right) in the roof is a hydraulically operated opening in the front left side of the hull. The top part opens upwards and the lower part opens downwards to form a ramp.

The driver's position is at the front right and has the same yoke-type steering controls as those fitted to the upgraded Tariq, rather than the original tillers/sticks of the Centurion, plus a single-piece hatch and periscopes for observation over the frontal arc.

The King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) of Jordan has developed a new light all-terrain vehicle (ATV) called the Al Washaq.

The pre-production vehicle is intended to fill the gap at the lower end of KADDB's product range.

The Al Washaq ATV, which is displayed at SOFEX in the left-hand drive configuration, has a gross vehicle weight of only 3,000 kg.

The vehicle is largely unarmoured to save weight, although the central citadel features basic B6 level armour protection. If required the bullet/splinter proof windows can be complemented with wire mesh protection.

The front-mounted engine and payload compartment at the rear are not protected in order to save weight.

The vehicle is powered by a Toyota diesel developing 105 hp coupled to a manual transmission with five forward and one reverse gears, providing a maximum road speed of up to 90 km/h.

It features permanent four-wheel drive and the independent suspension is claimed to provide a high level of cross-country mobility although its ground clearance is only 300 mm.

The vehicle intercom and radio communications will be determined by the end user.

The Al Washaq shown at SOFEX is fitted with a locally developed remote weapon station (RWS) armed with a .50-calibre machine gun mounted in the rear.

This is laid onto the target using a flat panel display at the commander's position.

According to KADDB, the vehicle can be fitted to a range of weapons including a 106 mm recoilless rifle or a GAU-type Gatling gun.

SOFEX 2016: KADDB shows mobile 105 mm artillery system
Christopher F Foss, Amman, Jordan - IHS Jane's International Defence Review
10 May 2016
The latest King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) 105 mm self-propelled artillery (SP) system is being shown for the time at SOFEX 2016.

The baseline vehicle - Al-Wahsh - is essentially a Tatra 4x4 cross country vehicle chassis fitted with an armoured body.

According to KADDB the all-welded steel armour body provides protection to STANAG 4569 Level 1. It has a protected diesel engine compartment at the front and a two-door protected crew compartment in the centre.

The front and side ballistic/splinter resistant windows are fitted with wire mesh protection.

There is an access door from the crew compartment - consisting of four personnel - to the 105 mm weapon mounted at the rear; vision blocks are also provided.
