India has been importing Himalayan Pink rock salt from Pakistan at mindlessly low rates, as low as 35 Paisas per kg in some deals and has been selling it abroad after packaging and marketing the same as finished natural/ mineral produce from Himalayas, as high as 20 Euros per kg on Western Market Shelves. This literally amounts to Pakistan letting India make billions of Dollars worth of exports at its own expense which it can make itself while denting a huge blow to Indian exports at the same time.

India according to an agreement in, 1947 will be continuously supplied by Pakistani salt despite war or peace. Similarly, they also agreed not to block Pakistani waters, though they are continuously building dams on our water thus breaching the agreement. Following post Pulwama escalations, India put all its efforts to sabotage Pakistan’s economy by taking certain antipathic steps such as raising 200% custom duties on our items almost banning them to get entry in their country.

India resells our salt by naming it as Indian brand (Himalayan salt) to rest of the world at very expensive rates. Why India is not raising tax on our salt and still importing it? There are multiple factors underlying this cause. Firstly, the salt mined from famous Khewra (Pakistani Punjab) mines is very unique and portrayed as one of the purest and most expensive salt in the world. It is also called as white or pink gold.

In the year 2016 India bought 625 metric tons of pink salt from Pakistan at price of 2.98 rupees per Kg and exported 15.09562metric tons salt to Korea, USA, UAE, Canada, Somalia and Spain at a price of average 125PKR/kg with its own wrapping and product name. Thirdly, India makes multiple other products from our salt and sells it to rest of the world. One more thing is also very important our salt is being sold by Israel and France as well as their product.

Pakistan needs to stop this mindless theft of its natural resource at such an abysmal rate and put a ban on India from buying Himalayan salt from Pakistan at such a low price. This natural resource can then be sold by Pakistan and reap the same benefit of billions of dollars in exports itself instead of letting India make billions of dollars on Pakistan's product while we stand to earn peanuts on exporting huge Himalayan Rock boulders for such a measly price.

The extraction of salt from Khewra Salt Mine was 389,134 tons, as reported in 2018 by ministry of commerce. The predictable reserves are between 82 million tons and 600 million tons. At this speed, the mine is likely to produce salt for another 350 years. So we can earn a handsome foreign exchange from our salt industry to help our economy and elevating the standards of our people.

Forget Oil and even precious metal mines that require millions of dollars if not billions of infrasturcture and development to get access to those metals, we are already blessed with PINK GOLD in the form of our own Himalayan Pink Salt. The Government of Pakistan needs to put a stop to this mindless theft of its PINK GOLD by India right under our noses and invite investors itself to export this everyday use commodity to every household in the world as PRODUCED IN PAKISTAN.

Salt export potential

Dr Atteeq-ur-Rehman Maqbool

PAKISTAN possesses some of the world’s largest salt deposits in Khewra, Warcha and Kalabagh in Punjab, with Khewra being the second largest.
The country’s salt reserves have been estimated at around 10bn tonnes, with 6.68bn tonnes in the Khewra rocky salt mine alone. Annual salt production from the mine is around 350,000 tonnes.

However, Pakistan is ranked 20th among salt-producing countries, producing only 1.9m tonnes per year. This is less than 1pc of global salt production.

This puts a big question mark on our approach towards managing and utilising our huge natural resources. Pakistan needs to develop a holistic salt exploitation and trade policy that targets the international salt market and restructures the sector from the grass-root level.

While over 110 countries produce salt, just seven countries account for 65pc of the global production. Despite being the world’s largest salt producer, China is still a net importer, as is the second largest producer, the US. Salt is mainly used in producing chemicals, as well as in agriculture, food and food processing and road de-icing.

Pakistan has a significant advantage over India in salt exports, as its salt is pure and contains
99pc halite

About 30pc of global salt demand comes from China, which imports 1-1.5m tonnes of the material from India every year. Impurities in the Indian salt have to be removed beforehand, and the cost of purification is high, sometimes exceeding the cost of the salt itself. Therefore, China has been showing reservations over Indian salt quality.

Pakistan has a significant advantage over India here, as its salt is pure and contains 99pc halite.

Salt consumption in Asia is projected to rise about 5pc by 2018, and the region is forecasted to account for nearly half of world demand by then. This offers an opportunity for Pakistan’s salt industry to establish itself as a major player in the Middle East and Asia Pacific market.

The advantages of inflating salt mining in the country over other minerals include its occurrence as a massive formation; its requirement of minimum financial allocation for exploration and simple mining techniques; existence of operational salt mines; and a rock competent enough to sustain the stable mine structure.

Some suggestions are given below to help the country realise its potential as a ‘Salt Republic’.

• Develop a national salt production strategy based on local consumption and world market trends
• Attract substantial foreign investment in the segment. A crucial step is to evaluate and quantify existing salt resources based on globally recognised criteria, like JORC Code (Australia) and CIM (Canada)
• Identify potential buyers, particularly among neighbouring countries and strategic partners. An effective way is to enter into indentures of ‘two-way-trade,’ where we sell the other country salt and buy some other commodities that we need. For instance, targeting China for salt exports can supplement our foreign exchange earnings
• Facilitate salt mining by employing advanced technology, business improvement programmes and building the required infrastructure like water, electricity and road networks around the salt belts, in addition to consolidating and augmenting the geological and mining data centres
• Encourage joint ventures between local and foreign partners and become recognised as a reliable supplier of substantial quantities of high quality salt.

In a nutshell, Pakistan needs to haul up its salt mining sector from the grass-root level by incorporating foreign market-capturing strategies, in-vogue exploration and mining techniques, business-friendly legal and trade policies, and capacity building.

All agreements done in past need to be revisited. Any agreement that was done at cost of Pakistani interests needs to be get done with. They have stopped talking to us, they have gone from a secular to intolerant extremist society, unless they mend their ways, we should stop trying to engage them directly. Every other month is now like we are going to war now........ when are we going to learn?

What's the approximate financial impact in USD?

The financial impact can be huge for a country like Pakistan if we utilize the second largest Rock salt mines in the world as in Khewra to its potential i.e. export finished and value added product instead of selling huge boulders of raw rock salt to other countries for pennies.

Canada exports $170,906,000 of salt. Canada is home to the largest salt mine in the world, Sifto Canada, and it is located in Goderich, Ontario.

Imagine what Pakistan can export as we have second largest mineral salt mine in the world with purest pink salt variety than other low quality salts found, for example, in India.

India is exporting about $129,097,000 worth of salt every year and like the US is one of the top producers of salt in the world.

How much of that is Pakistani salt labelled as Indian can be estimated by its total imports of rock salt from Pakistan which stood at 625000 kg in 2016. If India with its relatively low quality salt can export that much then Pakistani high quality rock salt can certainly outclass Indian exports to match closer to what Canada is exporting. Specially more so when India is selling our salt too by value adding and selling finished salt labelling it as product of India.

Thank you for your kind reply. I picked up this Pakistani Pink gold awareness campaign from whatsapp messages and tweets of fellow Pakistanis. I researched the topic on news websites and gathered the export figures and relevant info from World Atlas website as well.

PTI supporters have been tagging IK and ministers about it on twitter as well. It is all about spreading awareness and taking part in campaign to make it a national cause and priority of the government to take the corrective steps as well as attract more and more investors in this sector.

This Pink gold awareness campaign has been going on since Nawaz Sharif's government era that Pakistani salt must not be allowed to be exported so cheaply as raw material and should be utilized by Pakistan as finished and value added product to earn valuable foreign exchange that other countries making in our stead using our own mineral salt.

Huh. I wondered how kosher-certified pink rock salt clearly labelled "Himalayan rock salt, Made in Pakistan" was so easily available in the U.S. when (as far as I'm aware) no kosher certifiers have been allowed in Pakistan for over a decade. Now I know.

Sooner or later Pakistan industry will grow up and will have deep international market penetrations and then they will lead the market.
Indian companies are currently able to push this in global market as we have the needful export market penetration and infrastructure both. And given global connectivity and shinking of market distances, the infrastructure to promote and push the products globally will be sooner powering the local industrialists. There are plenty of examples of same from Shah masalas to Sports Gears.

With cease fire agreement violation .... all other agreements stand revoked.

Now in my opinion if you wish to procure that salt from us, there should be a limited quota and terms introduced that your final product won't compete anywhere in world with us. You can have it for domestic consumption for your curries .... at global prevalent rates.

You forgot Akhand Bharat concept ....thats salt from Khamboj and Gandhar region of Akhand Bharat :D

Are you Bharati?

There is no Akhand Bharat we came, conquered and divided your land. It will remain that and the only variable is further expansion.
