Defence and security company Saab has introduced its GlobalEye multi-role airborne surveillance system.

GlobalEye combines Saab’s all-new Erieye ER radar and mission system with the high-end Global 6000 jet aircraft from Bombardier. The launch customer for GlobalEye is the United Arab Emirates, which ordered the system as the Swing Role Surveillance System (SRSS), in November 2015.

For the first time on the market GlobalEye provides a sophisticated, high-performance system that can conduct simultaneous long-range detection, tracking and surveillance in the air, land and maritime domains, all from a single platform.

“With GlobalEye we expand and sharpen our offering, targeting customers looking to maximise their return on investment in extended AEW&C capabilities as a national asset to benefit their country,” said Micael Johansson, head of Saab’s business area Electronic Defence Systems.

The truly multi-role GlobalEye automatically detects and tracks air and surface targets over a huge area. Ground surveillance of moving vehicles can be conducted through long-range, wide-area ground moving target indication (GMTI) radar modes. With the Erieye ER radar, detection and tracking ranges have been significantly increased compared to existing airborne radars, and against the smallest targets. The GlobalEye system can track very low-observable air and sea targets, including ‘stealthy’ aircraft, cruise missiles or submarine periscopes, even in heavy clutter and jamming environments.

“GlobalEye is a game changer that delivers a unique swing-role capability for simultaneous air, maritime and ground surveillance in a single solution, with the ability to change role dynamically, while airborne during any mission,” said Johansson.

The GlobalEye integrates a comprehensive suite of sensors, including signals intelligence, and advanced self-protection equipment with a newly-developed command, control and communication system. Cost-effective system availability is assured through the combination of a small organisational footprint and Saab’s in-service support.

Saab is able to take the prime contractor role for this groundbreaking AEW&C system because of its decades of expertise and innovation in radar technology, but also through its detailed knowledge of electronic warfare, C4I solutions and systems and platform integration. A large proportion of GlobalEye’s sub systems are sourced from Saab’s world-leading product range.

A key element of the GlobalEye system is the Global 6000 ultra-long-range jet aircraft from Bombardier. This offers the latest avionics and combines ideal size for multi-role and extended AEW&C with outstanding performance. It is a high speed aircraft with impressive short field performance and low operating costs. Thanks to the Global 6000 platform GlobalEye mission endurance can extend up to 11 hours.

GlobalEye 6000b.jpg

Saab revealed the first of three GlobalEye aircraft it is developing and building for the UAE during a visit by reporters Feb. 23 to the Linköping facility where the work is underway. (Saab)

LINKOPING, Sweden — Saab has taken the wraps off a new surveillance aircraft destined to equip the United Arab Emirates with a powerful airborne early warning and control capability.

The Swedish company revealed the first of three GlobalEye aircraft it is developing and building for the UAE during a visit by reporters Feb. 23 to the Linköping facility where the work is underway.

The first flight of the aircraft is expected later this year.

The UAE ordered the first two GlobalEye jets in late 2015 and followed that up with an order for a third aircraft last year.

Saab is modifying Bombardier Global 6000 business jets with radars and other sensors to undertake AEW, maritime and ground surveillance. The heart of the capability is the new Erieye Extended Range radar employing‎ gallium nitride semi-conductor technology to help massively increase the detection range over earlier versions of the sensor .

Leonardo’s Seaspray maritime search radar and a Flir Systems electro optical sensor are also part of the package being installed on GlobalEye.

Analysts say GlobalEye will give the UAE unmatched AEW capability among Gulf Cooperation Council members‎. It will be the first application for the extended range version of the Erieye radar.

Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Thailand, Greece, Pakistan, Mexico and Sweden all currently use the earlier version of Erieye installed in either Saab turboprop or Embraer jet‎ aircraft.

The UAE also operate two Saab 340 turboprops equipped with the older version of the Erieye. It’s not clear what will happen to these aircraft once GlobalEye is fully operational.

The UAE is also adding to its airborne surveillance‎ capabilities in a separate program using Global 6000s.

British aerospace company Marshall’s is modifying two business jets for special missions work. The role of the aircraft has yet to be confirmed but the expectation is they will provide the UAE with a signals intelligence capabilities.

This retired Army lieutenant colonel got a pretty big promotion — in another country’s military

A retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel got a pretty big promotion after he went to work for the United Arab Emirates, where he now heads the nation’s Joint Aviation Command and National Search and Rescue Center as a major general.

Stephen Toumajan retired as an Army lieutenant colonel in 2007, according to a recent report by Buzzfeed.com.

At some point, he went to work for the UAE, and in a video posted on the Department of Defense’s photo and video sharing website, while with his UAE soldiers at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California, he says, “I am a major general for the United Arab Emirates.”

The US has been fighting Al-Qaeda before the operation in Yemen started. There is nothing new here except that it was made equivocally to the public.

That is not true, Saudi Arabia spent about 110 billion dollars recently in arms deal with the US, The EF is another story as the deal was signed back in 2006 for 72 EF over two decades. Spain is a trustworthy partner with Saudi Arabia in naval procurement, France comes second. The Saudi also signed MOU with the US for the LCS II but the deal is not likely to go through because the Saudis demand Ageis system something the LCS can't handle in the long run for technical issues mainly related to powering the System.

Speaking to the IDEX Show Daily just prior to IDEX, Saab said the GlobalEye multi-sensor airborne early warning/multirole surveillance programme is "on schedule" in the build-up to its entry into service with the UAE Air Force and Air Defence. The UAE became the launch customer for the GlobalEye just over three years ago, announcing an initial deal for two of the aircraft at the Dubai air show in November 2015. A third was subsequently added during IDEX in February 2017.

Also known as the SRSS (Swing- Role Surveillance System), the GlobalEye is an adaptation of the Bombardier Global 6000 longrange business jet to the multi-surveillance role. The chief sensor is a Saab Erieye ER airborne early warning (AEW) radar mounted in a 'ski-box' fairing above the aircraft's spine. Additional sensors reportedly include a FLIR Systems Star Safire 380HD electro-optic turret beneath the forward fuselage, and a Leonardo Seaspray 7500E AESA radar in a large belly radome.

Having been rolled out in February 2018, the first aircraft performed its maiden postmodification flight on 14 March at Saab's Linköping plant, where the three airframes have been converted from 'green' Global 6000 airframes. The extensive nature of the modifications - encompassing structural and significant aerodynamic changes, as well as an expanded and re-routed cabling network - has dictated a major flight test campaign to clear the GlobalEye for service.

Soon after its initial flights from Linköping, which had proved basic aircraft system functions and aerodynamics, the no. 1 GlobalEye - operating under the Swedish civil registration SE-RMY - was deployed to Granada in Andalucia for an exhaustive flight test campaign. The move to southern Spain was driven by the region's excellent weather and the need to fly regularly to meet the contracted schedule.

SE-RMY has subsequently been put through rigorous system and aerodynamic testing, flying numerous test points with varying speeds, altitudes and loads. The primary aim of the trials is to validate predicted calculations made using computers and wind tunnel trials. The GlobalEye is fitted with its own instrumentation and recording equipment so that no specific ground infrastructure is required to record gathered data.

This 'orange box' equipment will be removed prior to customer delivery.

While the aircraft remained in Spain throughout the late summer and autumn, test teams of between six and 10 personnel, including two pilots, have rotated to Granada every four to six weeks.

In December, the no. 1 GlobalEye returned briefly to Sweden, but has returned to Granada to complete its trials. It is scheduled to stay there until the late spring.

In the meantime, Saab achieved a major milestone on 3 January this year with the first flight of the second aircraft, SE-RMZ. The aircraft is intended primarily as the mission systems test aircraft, and is to remain in Sweden for trials. Much of the system test work has been accomplished in a ground rig. The third aircraft has completed the major part of the structural modification work, and the one-tonne 'ski-box' fairing has been mounted. The aircraft is undergoing the fitment of systems in preparation for its first flight.

No delivery schedule has been announced publicly for the GlobalEyes, and in the meantime the UAE AFAD continues to operate a pair of ex-Swedish air force Saab 340 aircraft carrying the legacy Erieye system. When the new SRSS platforms enter service they will bring a dramatic increase in capability. The Erieye ER S-band radar alone, with its gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology, promises a 70 per cent increase in detection range against traditional aerial targets, as well as offering much improved performance against small, low-flying vehicles, as well as those with low-observable 'stealthy' characteristics. The Erieye ER also has a maritime surface detection capability.

On top of that, the Seaspray radar and electro-optic turret provide the GlobalEye with a powerful maritime and overland surveillance capability, including synthetic aperture radar imaging and ground moving target indication. With its array of sensors and communications links all being controlled by an advanced integrated mission system with five operator consoles, the GlobalEye offers a complete multi-intelligence package that can 'swing' between roles seamlessly.

Basing the system on the Global 6000 also provides long endurance with a high dash speed capability should the aircraft be required rapidly in a certain mission area.

The platform's business jet roots also make it a comfortable working environment for the crew, and it has size, weight and power growth potential to add further systems and personnel.

Since the type's official marketing 'launch' in 2016, Saab has reported significant interest in the GlobalEye from both countries with existing AEW assets and those that seek the capability. The 'system of systems' can be scaled and tailored to meet individual requirements, and Saab can localise the system through the integration of existing national command and control datalinks and networks.
