Not trying to offend anyone, but what the heck is with licking the doors to holy shrines? It makes no sense to me

Iranian ayotollahs say that the shrines are a place of healing. So that guy was licking the shrine because he said he wanted to show the "healing power of the grave (shia "holy" cities are shrine cities built around graves of notable people)". It's a shia thing, they're like 10% of Muslims so don't judge us by what you see in qom in iran.

In reality I think the ayotollahs can't afford to close the shrines because they're a good cash source.

I had never heard of such a thing, I was thinking it was something crazy ayatollahs told them to do

Ignorance and twisted mentality. Licking is Ayatollah's invented ritual. Shrines are not holy in any way. How can a dead person help a live person? If they employ simple logic all of their problems will be solved.

I am really questioning whether there is any logic in Iran. I wonder at what point some country will have enough with them, or maybe the whole world.

That's what happens when you deviate from the standard protocols of a faith and get too deep into innovations. It's now become psychotic, cult-like worship of dead human figures. The Iranian version of Shia Islam. I'm sure lots of Iranian Shia Muslims are more normal but you can blame these recent trends on the new clerics in town that are toxic and distorting religion for sake of money(religious tourism), influence(sectarianism in ME region) and to benefit the ruling party(Supreme leader and co).

Actually they have plenty of educated people, and even their regime is educated but just evil. You should watch this American's vlog series on Iran:

There is none. Countries in the civilized world are fed up already.

I guess this would explain why Iran has such a big coronavirus problem, hey everyone, let's lick the door

Alarming videos show Iranians LICKING holy shrines in religious tradition as country's clerical hardliners refuse to close sites despite coronavirus outbreak

Iran has been accused of failing to clamp down on coronavirus contamination after alarming videos of worshippers licking a shrine emerged online.

Clips shared on social media show people licking the doors and burial mound inside the Fatima Masumeh shrine in Qom, defying token advice by the health ministry.

Worshippers in the videos brazenly state they 'don't care what happens', even if they catch or spread the infection which has killed at least 54 in the country.

Iran's hardline clerical establishment has refused to shut down Qom despite the holy city suffering the brunt of the outbreak and pilgrims spreading the virus across the Middle East.

The country is battling medical shortages which are worsened by U.S. sanctions, with masks and testing kits in short supply.

There are also fears that Iran is covering up the true scale of the crisis, with official figures showing a suspiciously high death rate - suggesting there may be far more infections than the regime is willing to admit.

One person who kisses the shrine in the holy Shi'ite Muslem city demands people 'stop scaring people [about] coronavirus. A child is even hailed for licking the doors.

Journalist Masih Alinejad, who tweeted the worrying clips, said that by keeping the religious sites open, the regime was 'endangering the lives of Iranians and the world'.

Iran has the second highest death toll outside mainland China, and ministers in Tehran have stepped up efforts to prevent the spread, which has infected at least 978 people

Every day trucks filled with disinfectants spray down streets, shrines, public parks, trash bins, public toilets and markets in Qom, Tehran and other areas that have had cases of infection.

State TV showed workers wiping down metro and bus stations.

'The smell of disinfectants has become my nightmare,' said retired teacher Ziba Rezaie, 62, from Qom. 'The city smells like a cemetery, a morgue.'

The head of the World Health Organisation's emergencies programme, Mike Ryan, said Iran may be dealing with an outbreak that is worse than yet understood.

Iranian officials, including President Hassan Rouhani, have repeatedly dismissed concerns raised by many Iranians over the handling of the outbreak, saying all the necessary measures to overcome the crisis have been taken.

Some doctors and nurses said hospitals in Tehran, Qom and Rasht city were overloaded.

'Hospitals are full of infected people. We hear about hundreds of deaths,' said a doctor in Tehran, who asked not to be named. 'We need more hospitals. The death toll will rise.'

The Health Ministry has ordered hospitals to admit only infected people and those patients who need immediate care. Dozens of military-run hospitals have been allocated to treat the infected people.

Iran's claims to have the virus under control lost further credibility last week when the deputy health minister, Iraj Harirchi, was taken into quarantine.

Just a day earlier, the minister had looked unwell and sweated heavily at a press conference where he insisted that the outbreak was not as bad as feared

In his subsequent video, Haririchi confirmed he had been infected with the virus and had quarantined himself at home.

Further fears were raised when a lawmaker claimed that 50 people had died from the illness in the city of Qom alone. Harirchi, the health minister who has since been diagnosed with the virus, denied this.

Farahani said the 50 deaths in Qom date back to February 13, whereas Iran first officially reported cases of the virus on February 19.

He also claimed that 250 people had been quarantined in the city, which is around 75 miles south of Tehran.

'None of the nurses have access to proper protective gears,' Farahani said, adding that some health care specialists had left the city.

'So far, I have not seen any particular action to confront corona by the administration.'

Iran faced anger from its own citizens over an attempted cover-up just last month, after claiming falsely that a passenger jet with dozens of Iranians on board had crashed by accident.

The plane was actually shot down by Iranian Revolutionary Guards at the height of Tehran's stand-off with Washington after the death of Qassem Soleimani.

Licking the shrine, that is disgusting ... I would never lick even Kaaba or Prophet's shrine just to show my respect and love, these people are still in shackles of Paganism .

Don't you know, Imran Khan claiming he kissed the floor of shrine, Is this not a larger paganism.

Imran Khan even announced to build a university, where worshiping graves would be declared a science rather super science.

I have seen people in Pakistan drinking sewage water at shrines. How about that? Actually, People indulge in whole lot of evil practices at shrines.

Situation in Pakistan is 100x more worst, actually besides some mulla, majority of Iranians do not indulge in nonsense like this, they only sell such novelty out side of Iran, where Pakistan is the biggest buyer.

Italy’s large elderly population bearing brunt of coronavirus

Italy’s large elderly population poses a challenge in slowing the number of coronavirus deaths in the worst-affected country in Europe, a health specialist has said.

The virus has killed 79 people in Italy, all aged between 63 and 95 with underlying serious illnesses.

The death toll, provided by officials on Tuesday night, marked an increase of 27 in 24 hours. Twenty-three per cent of the Italian population is over 65, making it the oldest in the world after Japan.

“Italy is a country of old people,” said Prof Massimo Galli, the director of infectious diseases at Sacco hospital in Milan. “The elderly with previous pathologies are notoriously numerous here. I think this could explain why we are seeing more serious cases of coronavirus here, which I repeat, in the vast majority of cases start mildly and cause few problems, especially in young people and certainly in children.

“Our life expectancy is among the highest in the world. But unfortunately, in a situation like this, old people are more at risk of a serious outcome.”

The are more than 2,500 people infected in Italy. Health workers have carried out 25,856 swab tests, significantly dwarfing the number undertaken in other European countries.

Those tested include Pope Francis, 83, after he was forced to cancel engagements this week because of a cold. He returned a negative result, Il Messaggero newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The majority of cases – 1,520 – are in the northern Lombardy region, where 10 towns have been under lockdown for more than a week. The virus has spread to more than half of Italy’s 20 regions, including Tuscany, Puglia, Sicily and recently Sardinia.

Authorities say the majority of people who tested positive in other regions were travelling from Lombardy or had been in the north for a few weeks before the outbreak.

Of those infected, 1034 are in hospital – 229 in intensive care – and 1,229 are recovering at home. The number of people who have recovered from the illness has more than doubled to 160.

Researchers at Sacco hospital last week isolated a strain of the virus from an Italian patient, which suggests Covid-19 may have circulated in northern Italy for weeks before it was detected.

Second coronavirus case confirmed in New York state, U.S. cases top 100

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A man who lives in a New York suburb and works in Manhattan tested positive for the novel coronavirus, bringing the total confirmed cases in the state to two, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old man had an underlying respiratory illness and is hospitalized, Cuomo said at a news conference. He added that the patient had not traveled to countries considered the epicenter of the outbreak but had visited Miami recently.

Cuomo disclosed the second case after an Orthodox Jewish school in New York City canceled classes on Tuesday to allow for precautionary measures after a suspected case of coronavirus turned up within its community.

The SAR Academy and SAR High School in the Riverdale section of the Bronx borough said it was in touch with the city's Department of Health and following its guidelines.

“At this time it important to remain calm,” a statement from school officials said.

The co-educational school, which describes itself as “modern Orthodox,” urged people to follow steps to prevent and minimize the spread of the infection, which had led to the reported deaths of six people in the United States as of Monday evening, all of them in Washington state.

About 100 people nationwide have tested positive for the virus, including the two people in New York, according to health officials.

There are more than 90,000 cases of the new coronavirus globally, with more than 80,000 of them in China. China’s death toll is 2,943, with more than 75 deaths elsewhere as 77 other countries and territories have reported the respiratory disease.

The man who tested positive remains hospitalized in serious condition, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement, adding that the confirmation was made by the New York City Public Health Laboratory on its first day of testing.

“With the results confirmed within a number of hours, we were immediately able to take next steps to stop the spread of this virus,” de Blasio said. “We have said from the beginning that it is likely we will see more positive cases of the coronavirus.”

As i said, even worst is happening at shrines of Pakistan, where drugs is an accepted norm.
I can post the video of a man drinking sewage water at ruins of shrine and calling it medicine, but it's out of the scope of the subject discussion.

You seen the shrine where they deform kid's heads?

I think pakistan has a lot of good. But it also has a lot of jahil practices too which are allowed to carry on.
