Yep they are participating to the Operation 'Sentinelle". And the president ordered the army to deploy permanently 7.000 soldiers in the streets to protect some places. (This can increase to 10.000 at anytime.)
France is probably,the only country in the world where you will see soldiers patrolling in the streets.

They were armed but I failed to get into the right position as they passed really quick and i was having my breakfast so it was hard for me to jump before them. I saw the rifle but im not able to identify it.
