One of Yemen's S-75 (SA-2 'Guideline') surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems has been reactivated and was used to shoot down an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) near the capital Sanaa, Al-Masirah TV reported on 20 January.

Al-Masirah is a media outlet that supports Ansar Allah (Houthis), the group that is resisting the Saudi-led coalition's attempts to reinstall Yemen's president.
The television channel backed its claim by broadcasting footage showing a seemingly operational control centre, target acquisition radar, engagement radar, and missile launcher from an S-75 system. It also showed a missile being fired at night and unidentifiable wreckage that was claimed to have been from the US surveillance aircraft.
Although some Yemeni military units are allied with Ansar Allah, there has been no earlier indication that the country's air defences have tried to resist the air campaign that the coalition launched in March 2015.

SAM sites were targeted from early in the campaign and satellite imagery shows all three S-75 sites around Sanaa were non-operational as of 30 December 2015.
Some of the missiles and launchers that survived the initial airstrikes had been removed by that time, possibly to be reused as ballistic missile systems.
On 13 December, Ansar Allah unveiled an S-75 missile that it referred to as the Qahir-1 ballistic missile, saying it has a range of 300 km with a 200 kg warhead. It has since claimed to have fired several into Saudi Arabia.
A still from Al-Masirah TV footage showing a Qahir-1 being launched suggests the launcher was mounted on a truck to improve the system's mobility. (Al-Masirah TV)
