Hi Oruka. 15B CAD for your yearly JP Defence budget seems to be a bit small compared to Canada's yearly Defence budget (21.9B CAD-2019-2020). 21B CAD for each Maya class also seems to be way over the top along with 6B CAD for each of your FFMs. Our CSC Frigates are about 4.3B CAD each in 2020 $$. The US Arliegh Burkes cost less than 4B USD each. 21B CAD for a Maya class destroyer would be about 5 ABs worth. I believe your JP budget is probably more within the range I quoted at JP 84B CAD per year maybe?
I'm sorry, these were my mistakes. Japanese defense gross budget is about 63B CAD (1 CAD = 80 JPY) which includes naval budget 15B CAD in FY2020. Each Maya class guided missile destroyer costs 2.1B cad and each new multi-role frigate, FFM, costs 600M CAD.

Thanks Oruka for that update. I kind of thought there was something a-miss there. 63B CAD for your entire defence budget per year is a very healthy budget indeed compared with our Canadian defence yearly budget as is your naval defence budget of 15B CAD. Our naval defence yearly budget in comparison is much smaller. Cheers!:D

This is a comment from a Canadian I took from another board, thought it was pretty good:

Ya great program, except that our fucked up request for tender for a mature, off the shelf warship resulted in us picking the only one still on the drawing board. Multiple companies declined to bid because they know how screwed our acquisition process is. Never mind the other bid we got (after the fact, and probably just as a protest, mind) at 1/3 the cost. Of course now it seems that if we just waited and, you know, coordinated with our closest ally who also happens to be the worlds largest defence buyer, we would have ended up with the FREMM at probably even less than their original 1/3 price bid. Of course there is the overarching question as to why the hell Canada needs an advanced air defence frigate. Who’s aircraft are we shooting down? Ze germans? At best, we can be a somewhat useful escort to American strike vessels. 60 ++ bbbbillion buks converted into rust. That’s like 12 or so fully kitted out Virginia SSNs. What a shitty trade. Edit: FREMM irony

Hi mtime7. Great to hear from you! First of all, this idiot could not be a true Canadian! What is he so angry about anyway? We would never talk like that! Canada has now made its choice of CSC frigate (for better or worse), and we must live with it. Yes, there were "flaws" in the bidding system. We all know that, however, this ship will be (and is) an excellent choice for the RCN. Is he saying that both the British and Australians have got it wrong as well? An advanced Air Defence Frigate? Yes, the first 3 anyway. Whats wrong with that? The AAW capability we have chosen through Lockheed Martin's (SPY 7 V1/2-SSR) is way ahead of its time and could rival the SPY 6 V1 AMDR. I wish we had 12 Virginia class, but that's another story for now. You thought his ranting was pretty good? Look, here is my philosophy: "He who knows, and knows not that he knows: is stupid-do not follow him: He who knows not and knows not that he knows not, is an idiot-ignore him: He who knows not and knows that he knows not, is a student-teach him: He who knows, and knows that he knows, is an Instructor-teach him!!" |O|

Sounds like you are agreeing with him, just not his language. Typical of Canadians to get their panties all in a wad over the way someone words something, even if they agree. The conversation was about the new (idea) / (program) they are trying to start in the US, Joint Strike Frigate, like what was done with the Joint Strike Fighter (F-35) with many counties pooling money together and purchasing the same ship, this guy thought it would be better for Canada to invest in subs, although I don't pay much attention to Canada seems like reasonable idea.

I am absolutely not agreeing with this idiot! We have no time to wait for a Joint Strike Frigate program as you say. We haven't even decided yet for the Air Force JSF program let alone a naval JSF. Canada has decided on the LM CSC TYPE 26 frigate (for better or worse) and we are pushing ahead. The one thing I will agree with him on is investment in 12 new submarines. Perhaps he was a confused and misunderstood ex-American and decided to "jump ship" for the land of milk and honey here. If you were trying to make me upset, you're getting close! :mad:åΩç√

If you Canadians would stop wearing them thongs, they wouldn't ride up on ya and cause you to be upset all the time, JSF was what the conversation was about, someone mentioned Canada joining in and I think he responded about how screwed up the acquisition process is, nothing to cry over, it's OK..

If you Americans would stop having such a serious weed-up-your-"who-ha", perhaps the rest of the world would see you in a much different light. No matter....it will all be over but the crying come this Tuesday, then the rest of the world can sleep a little easier. Nothing to cry over though. It's OK Yank!!:|}{

Some CSC Tid Bits: Here is an interesting interview podcast with Rear-Admiral Casper Donovan, Director General Future Ship Capability on the many ideas and factors currently shaping the design of the Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC). It is fairly long but very informative.
