After Iranian, Russian military advances Syrian opposition suffers setback in Aleppo - Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East

ALEPPO, Syria — Russian and Iranian support of Syrian government forces proved to be pivotal in recent fighting in Aleppo’s southern countryside. Syrian opposition forces lost several important towns and strategic locations in a large-scale offensive the Bashar al-Assad regime and its allies launched Oct. 16. The opposition brigades declared a full public mobilization Oct. 17 to try to counter the attack.
On Oct. 13, Iranian officials had announced that Iranian troops numbering in the thousands had arrived in Syria to prepare, along with Lebanese Hezbollah forces, for the offensive outside Aleppo. While Iran backed regime forces on the ground, Russia handled air support, having launched military operations Sept. 30. The government forces would not have been able to make progress in the countryside without the Iranian and Russia efforts. The opposition forces had long maintained their grip on the largest part of the region by deterring regime attacks, the last of which occurred in June 2014 on towns close to Jabal Azan.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United States have not provided the opposition forces they support with new or qualitatively better arms since the Russian intervention, despite reports in the media that Saudi Arabia was supplying the Free Syrian Army (FSA) with more lethal arms, including surface-to-air missiles, in response to Russia's involvement. “I did not see or receive any new weapons,” Col. Ahmad Othman, commander-in-chief of the Sultan Murad Brigade, an FSA affiliate, told Al-Monitor. “We received more supplies, but they are all ordinary weapons like we received months ago. We have TOW missiles that played a vital role in the battles against the regime.”

FSA brigades — which include the Thuwar al-Sham Battalions, the 13th Division, the 101st Division, Suqour al-Jabal and others — destroyed dozens of tanks and armored vehicles during the regime attack on Aleppo’s southern countryside. Othman shared videos showing that the Sultan Murad Brigade alone had destroyed eight tanks and nine other vehicles during Oct. 16-23.

Despite these losses in equipment, the regime forces gradually advanced with allied support. Since the launch of the attack, the regime regained 15 towns, among them Abtin, Blas, Kfar Abid, al-Sabiqiya and al-Wedihi, some 80 square kilometers (31 square miles), between Oct. 16 and Oct. 26.

It does not seem that the extra supplies of anti-tank missiles the opposition fighters received are alone capable of restoring the military balance that shifted with the Aleppo attacks. “We retreated from our positions due to the firing intensity that the regime benefitted from, thanks to the Iranian and Russian support,” said Othman. “The battles have definitely gotten more challenging following Russia’s air force intervention and the unlimited Iranian support. Therefore, we need more developed weapons, especially anti-aircraft missiles.”

The desert and mountainous terrain of the Aleppan southern countryside has aided the regime forces. The battles there require heavy weapons, rather than individual armaments. The regime forces are therefore able to hold their ground on hills and in highlands due to their superior fire power. As a result, they can control wide areas and track opposition movements. All this makes it easier for the regime to advance in the area, compared to in other regions.

The opposition groups in Aleppo are also weaker than the other groups in the country because of the war of attrition there against the Islamic State (IS). That part of the war caused the opposition to lose wide swathes of Aleppo’s northern countryside to IS on Oct. 9, starting at Tall Qarah, Fafin, Kulliyat al-Mushat and Tall Suwsein.

Aleppo’s southern countryside is of strategic importance to the regime. It contains the supply line between the areas under its control in Aleppo — among them the western neighborhoods, the Nairab military airport and the downtown area — and the other regions it dominates. Its military operations are aimed at expanding its supply route to protect it from attacks that might block it.

Russian 'double tap' strike

.....

حسبي الله ونعم الوكيل .....

That is the meaning of cowardliness. If they Russians are brave they should deploy ground forces. Not against people who are unable to retaliate. Their day shall come very soon.

So much for fighting ISIS. Iraq Shiite militia flock to fight moderate rebels in Aleppo #Syria rather than ISIS in their own country. What a disgusting and laughable move at the same time.

Supposedly white phosphorus used in Syria:

@WebMaster @others

Do you think Russia is testing weapons or trying to demoralize Sunni's? They are employing ethnic cleansing of Sunni's and using many heavy weapons on towns. What is the objective here?

Russia is lost it doesn't know where to attack. They want to terrorize people so that they leave their homes and towns. Of course all kind of weapons will be tested and used. Its an opportunity for the Russians to test their tech.

For me it is very clear what is happening now. So called terrorists were funded by US ( money and weaponnery) in order to take of the leader of the country and all of that was conducted by the bank cartels who wants the resources from Syria (gas and oil). Power of controling the gas pipeline in the area of middle east is very tempting an it is lucrative. Now Us army was 'fighting' there for over a year to kill the terrorism and with so much success that ISIS took over 30 percent of the Syrian territory. Now, Russians made the so called terrorists panicking in one simple attack. You can add up the numbers. It is clear what happened there and the conflict will escalate because interfering is doing just that.

Meeting scheduled to unite Syria opposition in Saudi

A meeting has been scheduled in Saudi Arabia to bring together moderate Syrian opposition groups, in an attempt to present them as a united front in future negotiations, Al Arabiya News Channel’s correspondent reported on Thursday.

The correspondent learned from an ambassador in New York that U.N. envoy to Syria, Staffan De Mistura “informed the members in closed session that there will be a meeting in KSA on Dec. 15 to unite the moderate Syrian opposition to present a united front in any negotiations with the regime on a Transitional Governing body.”

The news comes after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Tuesday that Syria could be weeks away from a “big transition,” following on from international talks in Vienna at the weekend.

World diplomats gathered in Vienna agreed on a fixed calendar for Syria that would see a transitional government in six months and elections in 18 months.

However the tricky subject of the fate of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad remained unanswered.

Meanwhile, the correspondent also said a meeting is expected in Jordan, to name and list which groups are considered “terrorists” in Syria.

Kerry said after the talks in Vienna that the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council also agreed to pass a resolution in favor of a ceasefire in Syria. But he added that a ceasefire did not apply to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militant group, the al-Qaeda-affiliate Al-Nusra Front or other terrorist organizations.

The United States wants to work with other countries to provide additional weaponry to Syrian opposition forces battling ISIS, Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said on Thursday.

Rhodes also told reporters at an Asia-Pacific summit in Manila that Washington was seeking a very specific commitment from Turkey to secure its border with Syria.

Israel says 90 pct of Syria’s ballistic missiles used up on rebels

By Reuters, Tel Aviv Wednesday, 18 November 2015

Syria has used up more than 90 percent of its ballistic missiles against rebels during a more than four-year-old civil war but a few were transferred to Hezbollah guerrillas in neighboring Lebanon, a senior Israeli military officer said on Wednesday.

Israel, which is expanding its high-altitude Arrow air defence system with U.S. help, has been keeping an eye on Syria’s Scud-type missiles as well as Iran’s long-range Shehabs as potential threats.

“The number of (Syrian) ballistic missiles left is less than 10 percent,” a senior Israeli officer told Reuters on condition of anonmity, but added: “That could still change. They could start making them again.”

Syrian opposition activists say Damascus’ army has fired dozens of devastating Scud-type missiles at rebel-held areas, out of a ballistic arsenal believed to have numbered in the hundreds before the insurgency erupted in 2011.

Israel had a stable standoff with Syria’s ruling Assad family for decades. It sees little chance of the now fractured Arab neighbour going to war with it now, but is still on guard for any accidental cross-border launches or deliberate attacks by militants.

The Israelis are more worried about Iranian-backed Hezbollah, which fought their superior military to a standstill in a 2006 Lebanon war and has been building up its arsenal.

Hezbollah now has more than 100,000 rockets, including “around 10” advanced Scud-D missiles with conventional warheads supplied by Syria, the senior Israeli military officer said.

Hezbollah does not comment publicly on its military capabilities but has confirmed improving them since 2006.

Russia confirms forward deployments in Syria
Tim Ripley, London - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly
18 November 2015

A still from a televised Russian military briefing on 17 November 2015 shows a close-up of a map of the military situation around the Syrian towns of Sadad and Mahin (Mheen). It shows four Mi-24 and one Mi-8 helicopters at Al-Shayrat Air Base and the 5th unit (presumably battery) of the 120th ABR (presumably artillery brigade) located at a Syrian army base to the south. The Russian Ministry of Defence has confirmed US claims that it has deployed helicopters and artillery deep into Syria.

The apparently unintentional confirmation came during a televised briefing on 17 November that included a close-up of a map showing the military situation around the towns of Sadad and Mahin in Homs province, where Russia is helping Syrian government forces repel an offensive by the Islamic State.

The deployments marked on the map included four Mi-24 attack helicopters and one Mi-8 utility helicopter at Al-Shayrat Air Base and a unit of the 120th Artillery Brigade deployed at a Syrian Arab Army (SAA) base just to the south with six 152 mm 2A65 Msta-B towed howitzers.

From that position, the guns could cover both the airbase and provide fire support to Syrian forces operating around Mahin, 25 km to the southeast.

Although some SAA units affiliated with the 18th Armoured Division were also marked on the map in a smaller typeface, the artillery unit is almost certainly Russian. Syria is not known to have a 120th brigade, while the Russian Army's 120st Artillery Brigade is based at Yurga and known to be equipped with Msta-B guns.

Msta-Bs were first spotted in Syria in September when Russia was building up its military presence in Syria, but it was unclear if the guns were operated by Russian personnel or had been donated to the SAA.

US officials said on 4 November that the Russian military had moved helicopters from its main base in Latakia province to Syria's Al-Shayrat, Hamah, and Tiyas airbases and said Russian artillery units are operating in the field.

The Russian map contradicted the US timeline, saying the helicopters did not arrive at Al-Shayrat until 6 November.

Airbus Defence and Space satellite imagery obtained by IHS Jane's shows just three of the 16 helicopters Russia has deployed to Syria were present at Humaymim Air Base in Latakia province on 12 November, indicating many of them had been moved to other locations.
