An analysis of the JH-7 being re-engined with a WS-10

Bypass ratios:
WS10 (based on rough estimate of AL-31): 0.59
F-100 (PW) : 0.71
Spey / WS-9: 0.64

For high speed, the lower bypass ratio helps, however, for SFC (specific fuel consumption), low bypass ratio means it would be a thirstier engine.

In terms of aerodynamics of the fan blades, low aspect ratio (holding speed and other exogenous variables constant) helps with lower altitudes, while higher bypass ratios perform better at higher altitudes.

The WS-10 is a much more modern design, lighter and yet producing significantly more thrust. It is obviously thirstier. It would give the JH-& a much better TWR and make it a meaningful fighter bomber today, with optimal combat perhaps between 1000 ft to 25000 ft.

Higher than this, the JH-7P will begin to lose maneuverability, which is less of an issue with modern BVR and HOBS combat, but still a factor.

Operational range - may be slightly decreased, due to the thirstier engines. The more modern design, lighter weight, and better mechanical efficiency will help mitigate the thirstier engines, so range decrease may me moderated by these factors.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of J-10P is that it is going to have the ability to carry PL-21, which JF-17 may not be able to carry. J-10P will maintain look first, shoot first capability for the foreseeable future. This may not be possible with F-16 or JF-17.

This should force the US to provide similar capability for F-16s or they lose influence in Pakistan.

Are you sure about pl-21 integration on j-10p? I am not sure about that. I heard about pl-15 but not pl-21. This pl-21 is ramjet, basically meteor with probably very long range.

With J15s, J10s , JH7s induction, suddenly Pakistan airforce looks very formidable and may well outclass IAF again.

But here is my assessment and some queries for ppl to answer:

- What will be role of JF17s with J10s induction now ? merely an interceptor like F7s after so much investment in the program. To me J10 might be slightly heavier platform than JF17 thus can carry a bit more weaponry than Jeff but frankly speaking there is not much a difference in between both the planes. For us, JF17 brings all the stuff which J10s brings for China. So induction of J10s in my opinion is nothing special.

- Similarly with heavier strike platform J15s, what will be the need of JH7s than ? J15s is just not a strike platform but is a multi role air superiority jet as well which can take care of itself as well unlike JH7s which are simply truck bombers only. So if you are flying a strike formation of JH7s , than you will always need J15s to escort them against Indian Mig29s. For lesser area to cover, F16s and JF17s escort will be enough (at Kashmir and IB) but taking on Indian Navy ships in Arabian sea or even striking western ports of India you will need flankers as JH7s body guards. Had we not inducting any flanker, than JH7s would had made more sense.

- To me J15s induction is the best among all. Though ideally its not well suited at Kashmir and IB area because of its large RCS but for naval air cover its the best plane where you always have more time to deduct Indian Mig29s and other planes unlike at northern side where due to lesser distance, there is not much time for either airforce . You always have to vectored your planes towards enemy planes on immediate basis.

- PAF proper answer to Rafale will always be F16 Vs with AIM120 D. No Chinese J series can match F16 Vs capabilities. Period. Even if we manage to procure just 1 squad of shinning new spanking Vs, it will be more than enough for Indian Rafales. The psychological edge these F16s brings over IAF is immense. They literally gets upset after every purchase of F16s. Feb 27 was prime example of their fear where their Su30s were escaping their a$$ off from the scene once PAF F16s started firing its BVRs. So 1 new squad and upgrading our block 52 to V standards will neutralize Rafales threat completely infact will bring an edge over them.

To summed it up, in my opinion all we need was/is 2 squads of J15s and 1 squad of F16Vs with AIM120Ds. Also we need to expedite Block 3 development since after them, we won't be needing J10s anymore. Anyways PAF knows better. If all these Khafee claims is to believed, than surely PAF has already identified and divided Indian threat into different roles. For every specific role, set of planes are identified and being inducted accordingly.

Sir , F-16 V of two squadron might be answer for the Rafale. What we will do against hundreds of Su 30MKI. Then MIG 29, M2K, jaguar, MiG 21 Bison and upcoming trenches of Teja.
I know most of them are not in parallel to our f-16 and JFTs. But we must not underestimate our enemy, is saying by Hazrat Ali (r.a). So if we can be prepared we must do our part of job then rely on Al Mighty Allah's help.
For the role division in different types of jets. I think PAF must completed its home work and then they had order the jets. Thanks

Bro same would have happened to PAC if they had to develop JF17 by themselves. There's nothing wrong with limitations...it's expected...Pak isn't some advanced country leading the world in tech. Help can be acquired...no shame in it. It will take some money and resources(which can be available from army's own budget)...but most importantly it requires a vision.

HIT must get help from Norinco China, and Turkish Altay manufacturers and some help from Ukraine tank developers. That give them new ideas and they must brought new machines to speed up the production. If we have money for all off the shelf purchases then must allocate funds for our national institute also, they must raise a nee university where different related subjects would be taught to students and give them practical experience in labs to perform the theories in real.

Yaar with J10s, as part of strike package, role of J17s will become redundant. Pro JF17 lobby in PAF, won't be appreciating J10s induction. Had we need to induct J10s now than there won't be a need of J17s at first place. We could had added J10s 10 years back. P.S my assessment is based on Khafee claim that we are getting further F16s as well (both Vs and some EDA). Had we not getting anymore F16s than I would had thought that J10s will replace older F16s and will be our primary reply to Indian Rafales until we induct 5th generation planes. Now with J10s joining the party than as a neutral observer we can simply put a lid to block 3 production,save some funds and just keep adding J10s. In other words, J10s can end our J17 program.

Sir induction of J-10P will prevent any future Embargo against our F-16. Because when USA know that, we have alternative options they will like to loose their counter weight against Chinese influence over Pakistan. And this jet would be a beast, who know after 2 years we also start manufacturing this jet near Kamra at a new facility with technology transfer or licence build.
And that engine WS -10 would give us alot benefits in near future insha'Allah.
